Hung with Elliot on and off for a month on a Sun City SA gig in the early 80s. One of the most kind and humble individuals I’ve ever met. Obviously immensely talented, he fit into a 12 piece MOR act like the pro he is. Really burned up the charts with lasting effect. Was great to run into him at Possible 20 on occasion. A truly remarkable cat. All the best.

I was fortunate enough to meet and play with Elliott in the early ‘80s. He’s a friend of one of my very good musician friends, one who’s “made it” and still puts jam things together for the occasional charity or private gig. Not only is Elliott Randall one of the greatest guitar players on the planet, he’s as nice a person as he is a great musician. Very supportive personally and musically, and more than willing to just be “in the band.” When it’s his time to play he just brings the heat. By the same token, when it was time to lay down the groove and play rhythm or accompany a singer or soloist, he was great at that as well. Playing with Elliott was a music lesson in itself and to play next to and with one of your guitar heroes … priceless. Nice interview, John. Hope he’ll talk about what he used in the studio for that solo in the second part of your interview.

He used his (‘63?) stratocaster with Gibson PAF in the neck and a cranked Ampeg SVT. As it was One of the few amps available at the studio.

The solo on “Reelin In The Years” never hit me as anything special, but I knew that I liked it. You had to listen to what follows when something that catchy sucks you in. After hearing that Jimmy Page called it his favorite lead in solo I had to check more deeply because that is some lofty praise. What a fascinating story! I had no idea that it wasn’t the ‘Skunk’ playing that lead. Imagine the respect you have to possess for other guitarists to call you in to help them out. No egos, or, great respect. Anyway, I now get it. I hear this great solo in a much different way. Sort of like looking at a painting selling for $150,000, and you thinking “what’s the big deal?” Then you talk to the artist and he/she describes the inspiration and the medium used, and the complexities and skill required to get the colors just right, and you end up buying the darn thing!

The band that I think got along the best was RUSH. I also love Steely Dan music and Reelin In The Years is a great song.

And the reason for that, I've heard many times over the years, is because they insisted on remaining a three-piece, even though they had toyed around with the idea of adding a keyboard player in the 80's. There were no stalemates when it came to decision making.

What a totally cool person. The fact that he helped produce some of the most mesmerizing moments in the "golden age of rock" (very little since the late '70s comes close to the true classics from the mid '60s 'til then) secures his legacy, if that even matters--I'm just glad he's still having a well-deserved good time. Thrill was the Dan's best album (so often the case) and Reelin' was the stand-out track (of many great ones), primarily because of Elliott's contribution.

I love Reelin in the Years and am so impressed that anyone is able to form and play that solo in one take. Incredible! As I go through the discography of Steely Dan as hear Elliot playing on Green Earrings and Kings; I can only conclude that he top tier!

I'm Irish and I lived in London during the 1980s (I went over to work there when I was 16 ) and I remember seeing Elliot playing an instrumental version of Reeling In The Years at The Guitarist magazine show sometime around 1990/91? ... . I think Dave Kilminster won the guitarist of the year around the same time because I remember seeing him as well (mind you, I went to all the shows during those years so my memory could be letting me down) ... also at the show were Gordon Giltrap advertising a type of arch top guitar and in the booth beside him was Jerry Donahue selling signed copies of his album Telecasting .... good old days Sigh!

As soon as I heard it I loved it. I have heard some of his other work and Reeling wasn't a one off. There was also Denny Dias,skunk, Jay Grayden, Larry Carlton and Dean Parks on the Dan's albums

I didn't like Steeley Dan but I loved the guitar in that song. Very innovative but still fit perfectly with the feel of the song.

That's NOT Pages favorite....clearly when he answered the question (when rating other guitar players) Page was "put on the spot" - he didn't want to say anything negative about anyone. Page NEVER uttered the words "that's my favorite", rather, the media (professional or otherwise) took his 'being nice' out of context and jumped to the wrong conclusion, then ran with that story everywhere.

Do you know what interview that "quote" came from? As I side note, I remember Page's 1975 cover feature in Rolling Stone Magazine. He said the "...solo of the year (1975) was 'Midnight at the Oasis" - Amos Garrett.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying and from what I've discovered the story is an interviewer knew he liked the solo from Reelin' and asked him to first rate a solo from Howling Wolf and he gave it a 10 out of 10..then he asked him to rate one of his solos from Zeppelin and he gave it an 11 out of 10 and then the interviewer finally asked him to rate the solo from Reelin' and he gave it a 12 out of 10. So, take from it what you like but clearly it's not like Page said, that's my fav solo of all time..lol That being said, it's such a great solo...lol

They have a tremendous catalog of fantastic songs. You probably just don’t know that they are steely Dan. You sound ignorant for saying that. Listen to one of their greatest hits albums and you will know what I am talking about.

Steely Dan is an American rock band founded in 1971 in New York by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Initially the band had a stable lineup, but in 1974 Becker and Fagen retired from live performances to become a studio-only band, opting to record with a revolving cast of session musicians. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the seventies
