Pièces de viole. À la fin du XVIIe et au début du xvllle siècles, le violiste et compositeur Marin Marais fut l'une des figures les plus significatives de la vie musicale française. Fils d'un cordonnier parisien, Marais vit le jour en mai 1656 et passa toute sa vie dans la capitale. Son oncle, Louis Marais, étant vicaire de Saint-Germainl'Auxerrois, le jeune Marais entra en 1667 dans le chœur de cette église (où il eut pour condisciple Michel-Richard de Lalande) et y demeura jusqu'en 1672. Sans doute avait-il déjà travaillé la viole lorsqu'il se rendit auprès du célèbre gambiste Sainte-Colombe pour y prendre des leçons : si l'on en croit Titon du Tillet (qui écrit en 1732), Sainte-Colombe aurait déclaré qu'en l'espace de six mois Marais l'avait lui-même dépassé. Ayant intégré en 1675 l'Orchestre de l'Académie royale de Musique (dénomination initiale de l'Opéra de Paris), Marais prit part l'année suivante à la première représentation d'Atys de Lully. En 1679, il devint ordinaire de la Chambre du roi, charge royale qu'il devait conserver jusqu'à son retrait, en 1725, trois ans avant sa mort. Si durant l'ultime période de son parcours musical sa position prééminente au sein de l'école française de viole de gambe fut peu à peu éclipsée par celle de son cadet Antoine Forqueray, sa réputation en tant que figure de premier plan dans l’histoire de l’instrument surmonta l’épreuve du temps. Marin Marais lived his entire life in Paris and most of it in the service of King Louis XIV. He studied bass viol with Sainte-Colombe and composition with Lully. At the height of his fame, he gave up his position and devoted himself to teaching and horticulture. An unrivalled virtuoso on the viola da gamba, which he perfected by enhancing the instrument's tone, he was renowned for his teaching. He created a method of fingering which had a decisive influence on the technique of playing. As an opponent of Italian music, Marin Marais followed the French tradition. In his dramatic music the recitatives follow the metrical pattern of the verses and the inflection of the rhyme. His pieces for viol, about 650 grouped in Suites, are characterised by their harmonic refinement with a writing style that is both rigorous and close to improvisation.

Marin Marais was a famed French viola player and composer. He was part of the Versailles court under Louis XIV, but his suites for viola and continuo are more serious and complex than what was expected from the Versailles dancing and feasting. He has been maligned by the beautiful movie "Tous les chemins du monde" where Marais relationship to the Sainte-Colombe famille is distorted. ;Marais studied under Sainte Colombe only 6 months, being more of a disciple to Lully. He did neither made love to Sainte Colombe daughter to abandon her afterwards. In fact Marais was married to a parisian girl when he was only 20 years and during his marriage with his wife sired 19 children. Thanks Classical Music for this beautiful collection.

We are always told today that the royal courts of the time were completely decadent and indulged in material extravagance. Music, we are taught, was only there to illustrate the splendour and glory of the ruler and his lazy aristocratic caste. Now we hear this sublime, fine, soulful music, which oscillates so marvellously between mathematical precision and deep emotion (as Bach brought it to a climax), and we wonder whether this is not perhaps a representation that (deliberately) omits the essential: The search for the true, the beautiful and the good.
