The Wedge of Jeskai is a Color Philosophy of opposing forces brought together through discipline. Because of this, it is a part of the MTG color Pie that can become better for it. It is the Raw power of Red, the Introspection of blue all given purpose through the soul of WHite. When breaking down Magic the Gathering color theory it's always fun coming to ones that resonate with you and as far as MTG colors go Jeskai is one that has me excited and I can't wait to share it with you.

"Theory without practice is worthless, practice without theory is blind" - I think this fits perfectly with the Jeskai philosophy. I always think the jeskai as a sort of Vanguardist wedge, it takes the common good from white, study and pursue of intellectual knowledge from blue but red is what gives it the urge to act, indignation with the status quo and the need to change.

As someone with Autism and ADHD who has long sought to balance the two through self-discipline, this fits me to a TEE. I am constantly maintaining the balance between my impulsive, emotional side and my regimented, logical side, finding time and time again that too much in either direction is doomed to failure for one reason or another. Finding that balance, typically through things like meditation, contemplation, and inner exploration, has been the great challenge of my adult life, and Jeskai very strongly defines that ideal. Awesome video!

I think that this video somewhat understated how harmonic this combination is. Something I've noticed about red is that it's a very complementary colour in magic. It doesn't serve as an ally or enemy or outsider as much as "fuel to the fire" of the already existing colour philosophies. Red is the gas pedal. White likes order, Boros enforces order zealously. Blue likes knowledge, Izzet tries to find *all* the knowledge. So red's major effect in the Jeskai philosophy is that of dedication. Jeskai monks are single-mindedly focused on the Path, devoting their body mind and soul to the pursuit of perfection of the self and the society at large.

Well said! What I like about red is that it doesn't enforce an ideal. It's just about being your pure true self and so that amps up whatever colors their are paired with
@MathasiaJ

@@DiceTry something about your description of red struck me; you said that red doesn't really have a unique identity, and it's more about being your truest self, as you just reiterated. I would add some nuance there and say that red's true colour identity is passion, which is why it's so often overlooked. Passion is very difficult to quantify in real life so it makes sense it would get glossed over or mislabeled in the colour pie, but you've gotten closer to it than anyone else I've seen. Red is energy in its purest form, like the fire that it is so synonymous with, and it shines through the most when it's paired with other things in the colour pie.

The way I interpret Red/White/Blue is this: Red brings the passions of the heart and living how you think is best. Blue brings knowledge and the pursuit of greater understanding. White brings the responsibility and structure needed to prevent a lifestyle or knowledge base from being used to hurt people. Example 1: You can have whatever lifestyle you want, but you cannot use it to hurt others. Example 2: You can learn how a weapon works, how it is dangerous, and even how to use it in a competitive sport or martial display, but you cannot use that knowledge to hurt people.

I can't believe that it took me so long to notice the fact that you finally uploaded the Jeskai video. That said, it is time to give you my thoughts on it. Frankly, the last part on the video is what I truly want out of society. Even more than an ideal Naya society, I would love to be a part of a society that focuses on honest discussion and human creativity in order to improve and enhance the world at large. One that provides learning and a safe place to test your discoveries without fear of being shunned or mistreated. One that allows people to reach for the stars and has the resources to do it. In other words, it is how I always envision society to be.

Red: I FEEL A WAY. Blue: Why do I feel a way? White: What is best way to deal with this way that I feel? Jeskai involves emotions not just conscious but subconscious. Red can lash out at things they THINK are the problem, when in reality the conflict is internal. Blue’s introspection allows one to understand what you TRULY want. White guides this desire to a non destructive release.

I think that the lack of black and green tells us a lot more about Jeskai than the color wedge can itself. Thats why I think Jeskai is the ultimate disrupter of misery. Black and Green as a color combo, in my opinion, is a color pair that marinates and wallows in the sadness of the fact that the world sucks and the only thing worth doing is going along with the brutal machinations of the world and end up on top. The fact that Jeskai opposes this and has the zeal of white, the drive of red and the knowledge of blue to back it up makes me kind of enjoy this color wedge (even though i'm a huge golgari player for the mechanical side)

The more I watch these videos on three colour combinations, the more I end up looking at what a society comprised of specific guilds from Ravnica (or Strixhaven) might be like. In today's case, Azorius, Boros and Izzet (As well as Lorehold and Prismari). It really is a wonderful colour combination. You get a society that cares about the self and society, of creativity and logic, of laws made for the benefit of all. It does not turn to dark places for magic - it is well capable of developing new arcana and technology, self expression and refinement. In many ways, this is the perfect colour combination for the nation I'm mostly running my D&D campaign in (Aundair, Eberron). Hell, this is a fantastic source for both heroes and villains: you can easily have vigilantes, rulers who take it too far not for themselves but their nation, artists and scientists that are not in for power alone or because of some 'destiny'. My only hope is red's influence on the quintessential Azorius bureaucracy makes it a more flexible, simpler but effective system. :P

Oh my gosh! *mind blown* I think this may be it. This may be the three color combination I most relate to. Jeskai has so much that I relate to. It is really quite incredible. I am a creative and artistic person. I am interested in both science and religion. I want to use my creativity to show a better world and bring enlightment to people. I don't like getting bogged down in religious dogma, and I prefer to have more experience and experimenting with faiths. Admittedly I am not a martial artist. However I have an intense focus and obsession in my art, and I refine it over time through practice. It is like a martial artist training in a monastery or dojo. I can relate to so much. I am also a tree hugger. So that is tricky. If I had to pick, I am more religious than material. So I drop green. I am still fond of Temur and Bant. These are two other relatable three color groups. Now I want to make my own Jeskai deck. I think a cycling deck with Ikoria cards would work best. That kind of deck beat my main Dimir deck so badly. These days if I notice that my opponent is using one, I just concede right away. I am on MTG Arena. Red is my least favorite color. However when it mixes with my favorite color, blue, cool things happen. Izzet is my favorite pair, and the pair I relate most to. Then that gives way to Jeskai. It is perhaps the three color combo that I relate the most to. Okay I am done gushing. Now I got to talk about the video. Jeskai is a wedge of higher thinking. The base is red. This is the color of freedom and actions. For the allied combos, it develops to Rackdos and then to Jund. For the enemy combos, it goes in a different way. Blue is added. This forms Izzet. Izzet has a lot of action and freedom as red. Yet the blue adds in curiosity and thirst for knowlage. This gives way to experimentation and creativity. From there Jeskai adds white. White is associated with religion and spirituality. So this creativity becomes artistics and it dabbles in spiritual ideas. There are two main enemy pairs. One pair is red and blue. Red has emotion, while blue has logic. These are very much opposing mindsets. Together they form the creativity of the Izzit pair. The other pair is red and white. Red has freedom. White has order. They go together in the Boros pair. This is where one fights for some righteous purposed in a formal army. In a way, Jeskai encompasses all the aspects of higher philosophical thought. This lacks the grounding of reality. It lack the physical nature of green and the individualistic drive of black. A major break in higher thought in color philosophy is the abstract logical nature of blue contrasted with the visceral emotional nature of red. To a lesser extent there is also a break in thought when it comes to politics. There is the law and order of white contrasted with the freedom and liberty. Jeskai is the only set of three colors that can reconcile both of them. So it gains greater knowlage and wisdom in this harmony. I think of the three colors as three parts of higher thinking. It is above materialism or individualism. I am not saying it is better, even though I am totally biased. I am saying that this is more civilized and philosophical. The blue part allows one to think abstractly. There are concepts and ideas. The red part allows one to think morally. There is empathy and action. The white part is the final part. It adds spirituality to sum up everything together. The pair of blue and white is the allied pair of Azorious. It is the most civilized guild of Ravnica for better or worse. It combines the artifice of blue and society of white to live in a society. It focuses on law and politics. When red comes in there is a drive to move beyond politics. There is a journey of enlightenment. The true self through discipline is most like Boros. A martial artist of Jeskai is a lot like a soldier of Boros. Both have agressive impulsive. Both are disciplined through training. So they are skilled fighters. Yet blue comes in. This gives the martial artist more insight in philosophy. That can weave through their graceful yet powerful actions. Prosperity through a creative socitety is most like Izzit. Izzet is first and formost creative. So when Jeskai is also creative, it is very much in tune with this. There is white added. This gives a spiritual side. Jeskai is not as much into machienes as Izzit. Instead it goes into art instead. Art is based more on things outside material reality, just like religion. White can bring in deep themes to teach insights. Wisdom through contest is most like Azorious. Azorious has a lot of wisdom to give. Between blue knowling all about science and education and white knowling all about religion and politics, Azorious is very wise and knowlagable indeed. Azorious tends to be bogged down in its own rules and structure. Then red is added. This gives a dynamic quality. There is no more dogma set in stone. Instead every idea is tested. This testing involves the action of red. This allows the freedom for wisdom to grow toawrd enlightenment. Oh Jeskai is awesome! :D

I then realized how many emotions and parts of myself I had been suppressing as I grew up and when I got to college was firmly an izzet mage, absolutely despising white for how rigid it made my mindset as a kid. The way I see it, Jeskai is the color combination that is the most aligned with anarchy (true anarchy, not just chaos as most think it is). The red part is pretty obvious : anarchist don't believe that the system can be used to change itself, so they resort to all other means, including of course violence. Through white, anarchist believe in a society where everyone can accomplish itself : equality of freedom (so, both red and white ideals) for everyone. True freedom can only exist if everyone is free for them. Blue here is a little bit trickier, but I do believe that it has a big place in anarchist theory. Indeed, blue is the color that do believe in the improvement. Anarchist want to create a better society that is not bound by things we normally find in a society (power, law, police...) and therefore must imagine what it should have (creativity : blue-red). They do believe that anyone should be able to express itself and have an impact on the society they live in (some of blue-white ideals). Finally, for the colors that are not present : - black is not present (even if the black flag is a symbol of anarchy...) because anarchist don't want anyone to be able to wield power for its own goals. They don't believe that giving power to some can do good. - Green is not present because anarchist don't believe in harmony with what is "natural" : they want instead to change their environnement (political environnement), that they don't see as absolute.
@Badbentham
@Badbentham 3 жыл бұрын
I can only add: apart from Izzet`s creativity, there is also the focus on action and passion from Boros, to reach the goal of Azorius, the colors of (man-made ) heaven. Overall, reason combined with community, and freedom - - Naturally, "selfish interest" from black and the idea of "nature`s harmony" are opposed to Jeskai.

I think Blue's overly contemplative nature and White's inflexibility would make them tend to unquestioningly accept an idea that hasn't been proven wrong by itself. White protects its order and Blue would not abandon vital steps on the way to perfection. But Red, ever the rebel, makes them capable of questioning and challenging those ideas.

Another practical benefit is that is that they are comfortable. It is less distracting when the magicians try to meditate or do some other task that requires discipline. Since Jeskai is a magical and spiritual group, they can benifit. Middle Eastern people wear robes a lot. Part of it may be for a cultural value of modesty. as someone who has a very jeskai way of thinking, I think it is a good foundation for a society, as it combines structure and intelligence while still being "human". Another benefit it has is its resistance to the corruption of black, due to its flexible nature, however, green is its biggest weakness, as a jeskai society would become very detached from nature and eventually suffer for it.

@@jacopoarmini7889 I always thought that Jeskai as a whole would be a color philosophy pretty close to green, that is, I thought that the push and pull between red and blue, when given a shared goal in white, would yield a philosophy that would behave similarly to green as it balances chaos and order, emotion and the needs of others. While I think this is still somewhat true, after watching the video, I think I’ve hit on one key difference. For Jeskai, the ideals of white are something that needs to be sought after, that is, ideals such as peace or justice are things that do not exist yet, but through emotion and thought can be achieved for the self and others. Green however sees the world as already having those qualities, and with compassion seeks to spread what is already there.

Man, After watching almost all the videos in your shards and wedges playlist it makes the Khans of Tarkir story arch that much more tragic to me. By changing the timeline, Sarkhan stabilized the wedges into their more stable allied dual colors, but in the process essentially made them deny a part of themselves. It made the Abzan deny their ambition, The Jeskai deny their sense of self, the Sultai deny nature, The Mardu their sense of unity, and the Temur deny their sense of wonder.

You can create any explanation (hypothesis) for any question that appears, but it has to be tested in order to become a theory (scientific theory) and then get closer to be best answer or... The truth of it. Method that you can't apply if you are not humble to accept where the evidence leads to instead to let bias guide you. And if an explanation cannot be tested it's practically worthless.

I feel like 3-colour pairings are very tricky to do and I have to admit I think you're Jund video needed a little more of an outsider perspective, only because themes of paganism, religion, nihilism and selfishness are not as easy to dissect as the more humanistic colours of White, Blue, and Red. I think to do a Jund video analysis well you need a more narrow extremist view of the world. certain colour pairings are often contradictory or lead to specific character studies or political philosophies of governance, which could take a lifetime to analyze or do a breakdown of.

Perfection through Diversity: I think this is definitely a Jeskai philosophy. It combines the Azorius ideas of creating a world that can serve everyone with the emotion of red that truly does encompass everyone. Red gives Azorius the perspective it needs to actually help everyone by helping Azorius understand that in order for a system to work for everyone it has to allow them to be themselves with all their flaws. Azorius can then create that system that red would be unable to build because it is so chaotic.

I don't know if you will do your take on the 5-color combination, so here's my take: 5-color consists of every color. According to this combination, all philosophies are valid. Black's ambition, Blue's desperation for knowledge, White's sense of justice, Green's connection to nature, and Red's emotion. All colors are valid. A 5-color society is open-minded, willing to view any situation through a lens other than its own, even if it does not always agree with the perspective of others. It encourages opposing ideologies to work together, to find common ground. Through the eyes of Tazri and Niv-Mizzet Reborn, everyone can (and should) form an alliance, and differing ideologies can still lead to a common cause. In a 5-color world, there is not a "best" philosophy. There are only philosophies, and to dismiss one philosophy, even if it may be a problematic philosophy, is to dismiss the nuance of ALL human philosophies. That's just my take, though.

Black - Recognizes their own importance. Red - Has mastered their emotions. Green - Is fullfilling their role in nature. This hero must face a 5 color villian White - Wants to rule others. Blue - Wants limitless power Black - Only cares about themselves. Red - Overcome by rage and hate. Green - Believes they are taking their rightful place.

White does want to make what it deems a perfect society to be. Ad blue's logistical skill and red's fever. You might get a group of philosophers, fiercely intelligent and well learned. Or... hear me out... White forcing both colors to help it make theocratic extremists who destroy what they deem bad. Blue is color of logic, so while it can selfreflect, it also can choose not to, if given reason and impulse, white and red. White wants peace. Give red's passion and blue's perfectionism, and you have police state. In Ravanica, White Blue is Azorius... Give it red. Now its Azorius helped by Boros (military police) and Izzet(engineers/inventors). So, political elite making rules for plebeian society, giving orders to militant police force and arming them with the best gear money can buy. I'm actually bit sick and tired about black making things evil, or white making things good. WoTC, pleace make a Bant themed brainwashing plane, where hero/-es are Rakdos. Black gives character ambition of better. Red gives them passion. This can become a juggernaut of FU. No stopping. No slowing down. It wants change. If you don't give it peacefully, they'll fight you to bitter end.

I’ve watched the Cosmos series, and I think this fits perfectly to what science embodies, in which Neil deGrasse Tyson gives us 5 rules. 1) Question authority. No idea is true just because someone says so, including me. Think for yourself. 2) Question yourself. Don’t believe anything just because you want to. Believing something doesn’t make it so. 3) Test ideas, by the evidence gained from observation and experiment. If a favorite idea fails a well designed test, it’s wrong. Get over it. 4) Follow the evidence, wherever it leads. If you have no evidence, reserve judgment. 5) Remember, you could be wrong. Even the best scientist have been wrong about somethings. Newton, Einstein, and ever other great scientist in history. They all made mistakes. Of course they did, their were human. Science is a way keep from fooling ourselves and each other. So yeah, I see this rules as what Jeskai is preaching.

I feel I am pretty much as close as you can get to an embodiment of Jeskai, I am an altruistic, empathetic person who is always learning more about the world and the universe in which we live. That said I think my philosophy is definitely one that should be considered. I believe in complete freedom for all with the exception of impeding on other’s freedoms. As a child I came up with my idea of a utopian society where we have laws and rules and all that, except if anyone disagrees with them or would like to hurt others or in any way take away from other people’s freedoms we give them another place to live away from the rest of our society where we don’t put any rules on them other than the rule of not hurting or ruining our society, we also would maintain diplomatic presence in order to give people born there the option to return to our society. The reason for this complicated world when all I want is freedom for all is the understanding and knowledge that comes from learning about and talking to people with different beliefs and with very different values. Now where exactly does blue come in? Blue is something used by the most selfless in the society in order to gain a greater understanding of the world that if people wish they can go to for guidance and understanding of how they can grow and develop and maintain safety for all. Scientific development is a must as the only way to allow everyone to have complete freedom is for at least some to know all there is to know allowing for a complete consideration of everything that could limit or enhance personal freedoms. With all this freedom talk and the red white and blue colour combo I should also say that modern America has totally failed at this ideology, pretty much everything in America gives and benefits the freedom to limit others freedoms with money and power being above all what buys you freedom. America is about as close as you can get with a mono black society as it seems to encourage money and power over all else while benefiting the selfish and hurting the selfless. So while my Jeskai philosophy embodies what America says it is, it should not be confused with the society that America actually is.

I'm SUPER late to all this, but if I may, I think this color trio identifies with me the most, and I think it can be best described as; "Progressivism", or, alternatively, Socialism (both economically and philosophically) On their own, white can be a restrictive, rigid and even fascistic thing if allowed to be swallowed in its own mind, ego, and the bad faith of individual powermongers. Red can go from positive anarchy to absolute violent chaos if lacking the focus and goodwill that many red aligned people otherwise have. Blue can become a cold, callous, technocratic mess that trades an otherwise fine drive for evolution and forward-thinking for progress at the expense of all else. Together, however, they care about the collective/societal good (white), the freedom and equality of its community (red), and the willingness to accept that change is not just inevitable, but is effectively mandatory to prevent society from stagnating (blue). Even NATURE changes, which is something even Green aligned people can forget at times, in their dogged pursuit of conserving it. It sees tradition not so much as an inherent evil, but rather, recognizes that some traditions either wither away in usefulness or goodness over time, or more often than not, were never that good to begin with (such as strict gender roles that restrict the freedoms of men, women, and God help any LGBT+ people in particular in these bigoted societies). It allows society at large to share in the benefits of the well-meaning, benevolent and progressive systems it fights to uphold and improve upon, and shuns those who want self-improvement at the expense of others, and those who would rather view the world through a restrictive conservative lense, than accept that the world does not conform to those conservative, surface-deep concepts as first assumed. Perhaps its greatest weakness is detachment from the world around us, as so desperate can we be to uplift our fellow man that we can sometimes forget to slow down and consolidate those gains to begin with. Sometimes, progress has to be carefully thought out and planned, otherwise its implementation could be sloppy at best, and prone to corruption and ruination by bad actors taking advantage of our sloppily executed reforms. Overall, however? I see very little intrinsically wrong with Jeskai, as it is perhaps the most benevolent and well meaning color combo of them all, and so long as it stays the course and maintains DISCIPLINE (a key factor in this trio), we can continue to ever improve on it while making sure not to lose ourselves in the pursuit of progress. After all, whats the point in building a better world if we are unable to enjoy the fruits of that labor? What's the point in progress if we cannot appreciate that which is gained thus far? Ultimately, there's a difference between consolidating gains and appreciating what we've done, versus keeping it all stagnant for tradition's sake, and to understand this is to truly embody the kind of progress we as a society might ultimately strive for, and what those of Jeskai strive to achieve in their own way.

Jeskai not only knows that humans are not automatons who follow logic to make decisions, but also have attachment to events, people and objects. It is the color that looks at people worshiping an idol and understands why it is ridiculous motion but also understand why someone would worship it. The blue brings that need to explore and understand, the red brings forth a connection to emotions and white beings the empathy required to understand others. It is the combination of monks, not only because of martial discipline and understanding of the self, but also because it is willing to explore the reality we live in from a human perspective. Monks always debated about the purpose of life, and where philosophers to an extend. Talking about power and responsibility, but also about human suffering and why it exists. Ways to escape it, and ways to live a fulfilling life. Where white has the need to do good and better other's lives but lack the ability to understand their needs, or the drive to self analyse and reflect upon their decisions. Where blue has the drive to improve and learn, but cares little about others or emotions. Where red cares about feelings, but is limited on its scope and does not reflect on its actions. Jeskai combines them. White makes it care about others, red brings the importance of emotion and blue the need to improve. Where Izzet cares not about the consequences of its experimentation. Where Boros does not care to reflect and improve its ideals. Where Azorious cares little about feelings and needs, more focused on righteousness. Jeskai mixes creative experimentation, idea of what is right and need to bring to act on those ideals of those colors to create an ideology that will continuously adapt to reality in its attempt to make the lives of other better. Not all monks are Jeskai though. As not all follow through the required creativity to think of new answers to questions already answered, or challenge established precepts simply because they feel it is wrong.

Of any two colors, I feel like white-blue can most easily settle into bureaucratic stagnation, which is why I love Jeskai. Red is there to always shake things up, to make sure that you're questioning the decisions you came up with, and the morality of the laws you imposed. A basic example would be that if someone was found guilty of burglary, they should be subjected to a prescribed punishment, be it jail time, recompense to the person who was stolen from, the losing of a hand, or whatever code of laws the society came up with. Red is there to ask the question of "what if this person only stole to feed a starving orphan?" Red is there to point out the flaws in the system, and question strict, emotionless judgment, and provide humanity and compassion to the individual. Often Wizards depicts Bant as the most utopian of the color parings, but in my mind, Jeskai is truly the color combination that could actually challenge this position as the color combination to provide the best quality of life for the most people. It's a shame that Wizards seems to struggle depicting these characters and ideas on its cards... Jeskai legendary characters more often seem relegated to quirky one off ideas.

They surely also have white (society and order) and blue (innovation) mana. Blue-white makes ever more complicated systems of laws but also believe that society can be inproved by everyone (democracy). Some can even say that they have green mana : the world is as it is, some have power and some have not (green-black). They believe in harmony : the free market should be available to everyone and the freedom of commerce should be a priority (white-green). The blue-black is here because there can be a lot of manipulation in a capitalist society (laws are often passed because black made sure that those in power benefit from it, and some companies don't hesitate to make money in dictatorial states) For blue-green, I am not sure (Monsanto ?). @@slydoorkeeper4783 Oh I know that. The "greedy rich man" is a strawman. What really drives a capitalist is not greed, but hopelessness (what they call "realism"). For them, there MUST exist a social hierarchy : some have to be at the bottom for society to exist (or else, we have ""anarchy"" = a chaos from which the strong will quickly emerge to dominate). They KNOW that when they make charity, offer jobs and try to act on the political level (civil rights, ecology...), that only a few will benefit from it (and can even be harmful to others). It is useless to tell them that, because they already know it. And if you are convinced that this is the way the world works (and always will), what can you do but try your best to get at the top ? It is the only way to eventually help at least a few people isn't it ? So yeah, still a mostly black aligned ideology, even if there can be a bit of red indeed...

Jeskai is the most dangerous color combination. Moral superiority that makes them feel with the obligation to impose their ideology. Essentially zealots. Why wizards depicted them as the good guy is beyond me.

More like a willingness to test their ideas against others.

I will say this, the new depiction of boros in strixhaven give me a new appreciation for that color pair, and Im now more open to positive aspects of jeskai and mardu.

Jeskai reminds me of Athenian or Roman philosophies and societies.
