what's fun about Handmaid's Tale is that many of the restrictions placed on women in the book exist in real life in various countries/cultures.

I have noticed that Murakami's novels tend to come at the perfect moment... I got Kafka on the shore a few months before I reunited with my best friend ( we hadn't seen each other for almost 4 years and she always talked about wanting to read that book) and I got Norwegian Wood as a gift but I didn't have the time to read it until later that year. But when I did, it felt like it was written exactly for that period in my life. ^^

1984 depressed the hell out of me when I was forced to read it waaay back in high school, but I can appreciate Orwell's insight given what has happened since his death. I'm about to dive into City of Mirrors, Justin Cronin's long awaited final chapter in his Passage trilogy. Thanks for your quickie reviews.

This was great. I'm riting an essay that talks about influential distopias and talk a lot about both 1984 and the Handmaiden's Tale (i adore the Handmaiden's Tale) but i was worried the Handmaiden's Tale was too obscure to talk about. But now i'm confident.

I read The Handmaid's Tale thanks to a wonderful professor who assigned it to us in a Women's Gender course! Buuuuut that was 3 years ago and I was pretty young so I'd read it again today to refresh my mind a bit and understand it better/new insights!
