Refinishing terrazzo floors with an Oreck, Twister diamond pads and... ~ howididit ~

Hello there, how are ya? Welcome back to howididit. Last week I stripped the double layer of glued down linoleum off the bathroom floors, and the next couple of weeks I will be cleaning, scrubbing, buffing, and waxing all1500 sq ft of heavily stained 60+ year old terrazzo! An Oreck, twister diamond pads, time, patience and elbow grease are key.
NOTE: I DID NOT mix the vinegar, peroxide, clr, and vinegar; they were applied separately on specific stains.
This is a very time consuming project, but so worth it, I estimate it saved me at least $10 grand.

Thank you for this! I just removed 1990s fake wood floor and the terrazzo underneath is in really good shape and very pretty. Tile or professional restoration is way to expensive right now so going with the nearly $700 method here and it’s looking great!

I have a Oreck orbiter and use it in my janitorial business. They are excellent machines and have their place. I use mine where my 17 inch scrubbers can't go, you can also bonnet clean carpets with them.

I found an Oreck XL orbiter for sale but it is only the white orbiter on the bottom. How do you attach the pads you used? Thank you! Great video!

I guarantee the professional would have gotten the stains out. They would have honed the floor. Which is time consuming and is why the price of restoration is high. Not many restoration specialists compared to other trades like plumbers, electricians etc. Another reason why price is high. $22 is insane though haha.

Start out with a much courser 30 grit and remove baseboards.

it's expensive because of the labor and material cost. A wax coating will not give you nearly as good of a shine and will not last as long. the floor needs to be honed farther down to remove the staing that DIP pads cannot do. Also, the Oreck does not have nearly enough head weight, for those pads to properly work. But good DYI attempt and as long as your happy that's all that matters!

You are so right, but I had a limited budget. Eventually (when I hit the lottery) I would love to have the floors refinished professionally, until then, this was a great compromise.

I paid 6k for mine in Tampa. First airbnb guest and my floor was scratched all other. The people that did it made it shine just with the wax. Back home we make it shine by the grade of the pad not the wax.

@howididit hi, you did good. There are pads that go to down 100 grit. May have helped you with stain. Also, after 'cutting' the floor with 100 grit apply a poultice. Follow instructions. Sometimes it will pull the stain. Cut your time with a small wet dry vac. Try a little bleach on an out of the way stain, after 100 grit. Test it. Floor will not explode or turn purple. 😅 Try a solvent based penetrating sealer. Not wax. Much respect to you for doing it. I've been doing floors since '77.

Will these Twisters remove glue from carpet stains? Glue is gone. Just the stains remains

I would like to know the same. I'm also curious about how deep they go. Same problem over here. I hit one with a 200 grit palm sander and it didn't do anything.

No clue, I didn't have any glue issues. Let me ask a friend's Son, he is in the floor refinishing business.

Do your floor have any scratch marks? In paid 6k todo my terrazzo and a year later my floors are just nasty. It seems like they never gave a natural shine by buffin, the shine was obtained with the wax so my floors look horrible.

Yep, a light mop with white vinegar cleans them, then quick buff by spraying zep wax and running the buffer over it. Shines up like a brand new penny

Wax coating is.wrong thing to put on terrazzo. It needs a special sealer for concrete. That terrazzo will change colors

I paid for my 1300 sf, $1,600, really bad job. Than a two month later $5,000, bad job, gave me $2,000 back. Last company $5,000 and still not happy. Finding real trade professionals in Tampa FL is extremely hard. They are all crooks.

You didnt even correct the color in the hall. Its just a picture before and after with some wax on it.

actually it is stripped, scrubbed, and protected with a couple of coats of wax. So far it is holding up pretty good. Thanks for watching.

@howididit again, you did nothing to the hall. Your before and after still show the same faded yellow from foot traffic. I didn't ask if you stripped and waxed the floor. I stated ALL you did was post a before and after picture of the floor without and then with.
