All winter I have been stressing about water coming inside my narrowboat, enough is enough. This episode I remove, clean up and refit my FIRST window. Obviously I make a few errors and go about it the long way, but hopefully you can learn from my mistakes....

You might like to consider putting the sealant on the inside of the frame where you used an angle grinder. Then rivet in the window. That will give a pleasing neat finish.

For the rivets, you might want to put a drop of silicone in the hole before putting the rivets in. Then wipe off excess after you set the rivet. This way they have silicone in the hole. So they are sealed, and you don't have to add it last.

Not the sealant Queen May, bit of practise and masking up before you take the window out would help. Throw the sticky back foam away and use all sealant and blind rivets,( no hole right throw the middle)Take off what squirts out the sides with plenty of paper towels to keep your fingers clean, but leave enough to wet finger (no cloves) up to the masking tape, with a neat edge on the window frame, which well show through when finishing the sealant. Wet finger can be very little amount of soap in water in a cup, or as the pro boys do, spit, that would be spit on your finger / fingers, but don't get it near your mouth. When you have the edge you want, and feathered down to hardly anything into the masking tape, pull the masking tape off slowly and carefully and lightly wet finger it around again. I would suggest using black sealant as then it looks like a rubber seal when finished.

@@wellbeingonwater Love to help you it you were closer May. Next time you're anywhere near Bristol give or take 25 miles let me know. But with sealant of anysort the secret is use little, as the more you use the more out of control it gets, and the wet spit / slightly soaped finger routine and of course masking tape and plenty of paper toweling for your fingers. Clear if you don't want a boarder, or black if you do or don't mainly for boat work. If you have no boarder at all and take off what squirts out around the frame and drill holes after blind riveting it in, it will be fully waterproof anyway. As some of those sponge sticky sealant tapes are not UV protected and will rot in time in sunlight. But as you say and your right practise makes perfect. Question! what was your dad trying to pop rivet in the first part of your video with the rivet going in and out? As he needs to keep the riveting tool pushed hard against the rivet head or slam the toll against the head to free the the jaws inside the tool.

Hello . just want to add my two cents worth. They have what is known as a bottom end rivet. The Mandrell does not go all the way thru. There are used to help keep water out. And maybe a wire wheel on the drill will help with removing the old chalk. Stay Safe and GO Well.

Hi 👋 Mrs. May, I Don’t mean to be an all-rounder, but… Have you ever heard about Butyl rubber? It’s better known as that (usually)grey strip that lies between a kitchen desk and its sink, for example. It came in strips (a little bit chewy than window putty) and “silicone tubes” (2 or 3 different viscosity). It’s tixotropic, it means that it remains soft and never cure( it last years). It can be used to fill even relative high thickness gaps, it”s pretty elastic so it can follow some relative movements between different panels., because slender ( + floating) bodies are prone to flex and twist. It’s largely used in campers and roulotte window and paneling joints. And it’s cheap, super easy to remove and to be replaced if needed.

Sikoflex marine sealant in black or white is going to be one of your best friends! You can apply it under water and it will stick and seal !. Expanding foam is another great way of filling gaps and once set it is easy to trim. Just remember when you use sikoflex tho or any kind of sealant you need to do a trick with the nozzle….. flatten it slightly so it is more of a oval shape and you put a small notch in the nozzle ( this ensures it comes out like a triangular shape)….it might be a good idea to look up a few videos on KZfaq from people who fit bathrooms because they use sealant a lot and they have some tutorials videos which will help you immensely,you will find using a Piece of trimmed wood is better for smoothing off the sealant rather than using your finger and you need to get used to releasing the pressure on the Gun when you finish your line ( the silver plate at the back which is sprung loaded ) then it won’t keep squirting out.

@@wellbeingonwater No, I don't think so. If you check at 7:18 your vehicle strip goes all the way to the top, which means you will have a vertical joint where it meets the horizontal strip. If you put the horizontal strip all the way across them the join will also be horizontal (so gravity will work in your favour)

Good job... looks like you should be OK. Not exactly how I would of done it, but there's always more than one way to get the job done. As for the duct tape, next time you are at the home improvement store, you need to get some painters tape. In the US, the most common brand is called frog tape. It's usually green or blue. This tape is alot less harsh on the paint and won't pull the paint off when you remove it.
@wellbeingonwater
@wellbeingonwater Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! Yes the duct tape is a way to stop the current leaks, not to seal with. So all windows will need touching up but that's OK! Just add it to the list!
@rodcharlton1889
@rodcharlton1889 Жыл бұрын
@@wellbeingonwater Oh, I thought it was holding something in place on the repaired window. In that case, painters tape is a bad idea as it won't last long trying to keep the water out. It will peel off within a few days so that's not a good idea. Sorry.

Great job may 👍 One down loads to go 👎. Looks like the rust has broken down the original seal it's well known aluminium and steel don't mix together well they oxidise and eat away each other time and looks like you've got to it before it's gone too far . Separation of the metals with a seal strip a good idea . A quicker less aggressive option for the angle grinder is rubber disc which fits into the angle grinder and sanding discs which clamp to the rubber disc . The rubber discs come in flexible soft rubber or ridged hard plastic . Makes quick work of removing rust and gunk . 60 grit rough for heavy rust up to 120 grit for smooth finish . Not as aggressive as steel cutting blades . And if the angle grinder has variable speed it's a lot easier to control .

Thanks so much for your thoughts, tips and advice! Someone mentioned wire disc.. I suspect would be more aggressive but affective! That grime is strong stuff!

Hi May, just a little tip I leaned from my partner Helen. When you’ve finished applying the silicone, to prevent anymore oozing out of the nozzle and going to waste, release the small lever above the trigger on the caulking gun, doing this will relieve pressure on the plunger. Your doing a great job, best wishes from Australia.

When doing silicon fairy liquid is great. One put on your hands and just leave it. Don’t wash it off. But to where ever you don’t want the silicon to stick, use a paintbrush and paint it on just wiped off after. Also fairy liquid on your finger to clean and shape the mastic after you’ve done as well. And at the end just wash your hands with hot water and the silicon won’t stick into your pores of your skin. Hence why you put it on and leave it at the start 9:42

Why the butyl tape ? if you had put a beading of silicone sealant on the window frame, the rivets would have pulled it in tight. To clean the gunk off the windows use a battery drill with a sanding wheel (80 grit) it's very kind to aluminium windows and less effort.

Cool job.,Some advice when you do the others in time. Instead of using standard rivets, use rivet nuts. That way one can always unscrew the frames without using power tools like a drill to remove old rivets(It will add a little bit clearance between the window frame pending which rivet nuts you can get and body but thats why there is sika and it will not leak,I promise you). Good choice on primer. For sealant use Sikaflex 291 i and get a small can of their primer and cleaner. Makes life much easier and you have a guaranteed job done without hassles. On the rivet nuts and screws, get grade 316 stainless steel ones from a marine hardware store. Cost little bit more, but in years to come will save you tons of nightmares.

Are you sure water ingress was around the frame? My experience with hopper windows of a certain age, the foam rubber at either end of the hopper glass loses the ability to form a seal and requires replacing. A relatively quick and easy job. Also important, and not obvious; while the top glass is out, clean any trapped dirt from the tiny gap above the horizontal extrusion and frame to allow any water dripping down the foam, to escape out through the gap rather than into the boat.

Whenever using caulk, if you want perfect looking seams, take the time to use masking tape or any tape for that matter and mask off either side of what you want to caulk. Apply the caulk, smooth out with your finger, excess caulk is caught on the tape, peel tape off and you have a 100% perfect looking job. Same goes for painting, if you're unsteady or uncomfortable with "cutting in" with a brush just take the little bit of time and mask things off with tape and you will have a beautiful pro looking job.

You have such super energy for this work! And you wear a mask! But the wood, mold, mildew you're working with has been inside your boat, where you've been living, and that you've been breathing, and you haven't been wearing a mask. 🙂 Why wear a mask now? And, as you suspected, NO don't use petrol to clean metal ... use a purpose-made metal cleaner. And as others have said here, put the sealant BETWEEN the window frame and the boat, don't use the tape you used, use a proper "goo" sealant that will fill the corners and curves. And, don't use "duct" tape ... use paint tape, blue paint tape is best as, if you use the best professional grade, it will not pull off the paint. And there are types of "goo" sealant that can be painted and some that cannot be painted. Research, do the homework, talk to the folks in the paint/hardware store. You are doing super!!!
