Funerals are fantastic for closure, for everyone the deceased knew. And of course time reduces the pain. My dad died in June 2009, I kept his wish and flew his body for burial in Bangladesh, and boy it turned to be a very big event. I now have wonderful memories, best thing of all I don't have to pretend I'll see him again as I know I won't.

I'm so uplifted by watching your channel at a time when there's not much to laugh at. Do you think your dad was referring to the Fibonacci ratios/curves/numbers that are present in nature? I think some guy in India first disovered this and called it God's fingerprint. My daughter learned about this in her science degree at U of Saskatchewan. I worked with Ismailis from Kenya for years in Calgary. They are very self educated and kind people and I really miss them. Hugs from the Sunshine Coast.

One, the police recover deleted photo all time that how they can catch people with incriminating evidence, also, his image that day is indelibly printed in your memory. Remember that so acknowledge the anger and release the pain it does you no good to carry that around with you. As a Hindu Brahmin Octogenarian + , I find Islam so fascinating, Many times I’ve been inclined to run away from rituals and so on on festival days and temple hopping I found abhorrent!. But ISLAM! I wouldn’t have lasted a day past 5years a Muslim woman. As an Agnostic it’s easy being in A Hindu.. I fully endorse the idea of expressing grief which ever way you want after a person died. Fully endorse quick cremation. As for You Abdulla I read all your posts and am heartened that a new breed of FreeThinkers are coming up teaching the two-legged creatures “Us “ A thing or two. This is beautiful man, thanks for sharing your story and relationship with your father. I was raised as a Sunni myself and I agree that the "system of thinking", for lack of a better word, does seem dogmatic to me. A lot of the approaches of Sunnism in my opinion seem to be quite restrictive and not aligned with the "modern" world. I don't mean it in a sense of hedonism but more so in a sense of progressive aspect of the society. Anyway, so, I am on the same boat as you right now. I do think religions are man-made. But, to me, there is still beauty in the world that we can appreciate through our logical and intellectual thinking. In any case, your video makes me curious about Ismaili :)

Ans what sucks with all this is that they don’t get what they’ve done wrong. I will not contact them until they get buried, even though they live in another city here. And of course I feel sorry for them, but I never saw them as my parents/family and It’s not my fault that they don’t understand. I hope one day I’ll be able to find a solution for my illnesses that they and everybody else caused me, and go out and talk about my history as an ex-Muslim atheist.

I really enjoyed watching your video tribute to your father and providing an insight into your relationship with your father. With regards to your disappointment in not being able to keep a last photograph of your father. I can empathize with your sadness. My mother passed away when I was very young and to this day I feel emptiness in not having more time with her. So much so that I don’t even recall what her voice sounded like. Like you recall your father I too remember her kindness tolerance and wisdom. I do not pretend to know what rationale the two volunteers used in asking you to delete your photo. It may have had to do with religious and social dogma. However I can provide you some insight into the most “correct” reasoning behind why they may have asked you to delete the photo. Your father was a follower of the Ismaili faith and one of the central tenants of the faith is to recognize the temporary nature of this life. Once the person has died his soul has left and all that remains is the body ( an empty shell) That is why the body is buried in a simple cloth and a simple coffin if any. To symbolize the importance and eternal nature of your dads soul as opposed to his physical being on earth. Is your dad was indeed a follower of this faith then I would assume that he would have wanted you to remember his actions and his wisdom and his morality rather than his his physical appearance.

I’m sorry I didn’t get s chance to finish my comment before I hit post prematurely. I do not intend to minimize your regret in not having that final photo as a memory but to simply provide you with an alternative narrative that you can use to justify to yourself that the picture itself was not really necessary because you will always have your memories with him. And to also give you a reason to rationalize to yourself that not taking his picture to remember him by is what your father actually believed was right because his faith placed infinitely more importance to his memory and soul than to his appearance and his “body” I wish I could explain this more eloquently. Please do not misinterpret my comment. And thank you for allowing me to glimpse the wonderful tolerant relationship both you and your father share

Ismaili, Shia or Druze, it's still Islam. Converting to so called "Sunni/Salafi Islam" is overrated and you're only giving more power to their ego by acknowledging it, it's useless. Your father had the right idea, same as mine who brought me up as a non-dogmatic Sufi muslim. I was allowed to question everything and form my own opinions on religion. Now we often acknowledge that the nature of religion is caused by sheer existentialism, one's freedom to express and experience how they perceive life. God is not an imaginary spook, sitting on a throne in the sky. More importantly, the idea of God being a some kind of person, who sometimes feels jealous, vengeful or showing favoritism towards his creations is a fallible one. If God thinks or feels emotion then wouldn't he have questioned his own existence? ie. "where do I come from? why am I here? why am I god? Could another entity have created me?" thus invalidating his own perfect sovereignty. A more refined way of looking at God for non-theistic people, is to replace the word God with "Existence" or "Reality" and exclude all human-like aspects to it. In a sense it is simply nature, or a better word for it "Existence itself". God is just a word theists use to relate to the nature of being. Thus, God is the force that emanates all of reality and indeed we are bound by this reality. There is no way we can explain why we exist, we're just simply are. Why does the universe exist? Why is there something rather than nothing? Take a step back and simply observe all that there is and internalize that. Ask yourself why couldn't I have "NOT" existed, if I could, what would non-existence feel like. To be honest it's technically impossible. Even nothing is something when placed within the "space" of our conscious minds. The issue is "Always Something rather than Nothing, But I refuse to think it's some personified God". From my background (disclaimer: NOT EXCLUSIVELY ISLAM), this realization is what is called by "Submission". Submission to God? Remember, replace the word "God" with? "Existence" or "Reality". And there you have it. And in a way, I can be an Atheist too, for rejecting the concept of God as a spook/person. Perceptions can change. Just submit to the fact that the universe just exists. And how so? Through existence itself. Why existence? Now you tell me how you can explain it better. So why is something rather than nothing? I guess the best answer to that is Even if there was nothing, you still wouldn't be satisfied. Everyone has their way of interpreting life, thus different ways of thinking and religions. Some questions are deep and thoughtful while some are not. But even with our diverse backgrounds, it always seems to be that same age old question of existentialism that brings us together.

@@greymanBB I know man. I've read about it. Atman(the conscious self) and Brahman(Reality Itself). I was still confused about God during my late teens until I came across some satsangs by Burt Harding on youtube. I'm not sure if the lectures were hindu or buddhist but I was amazed at how much depth and conclusion I was able to reach with them. The particular video was about God as "Existence Itself", it made alot of sense and even fulfilled me as a Sufi. Its interesting when I couldn't find the thing I seek in my own religion, is instead fulfilled by different one :). I highly recommended listening to this philosopher called Alan Watts, he focuses more on Zen Buddhism and it brings me alot of peace and clarity by just listening to his late lectures.

A deep and personal story. Thanks for introducing the concept of Ismaili-ism. I wonder why you became an Atheist as opposed to Agnostic after moving from Ismaili to Sunni and then no affiliation? Indeed there is a lot of unfortunate events in the world. Yet there is a lot of progress and improvement in people's lives also thanks to modern developments. Although the benefits are still skewed, it is not totally terrible.

One possible connection between theodicy and aesthetics is through the concept of "the problem of evil." Many philosophers and theologians have argued that the existence of evil and suffering in the world undermines traditional beliefs in a benevolent and omnipotent God. This problem can be seen as a challenge to the aesthetic value of the world. If the world is full of evil and suffering, can it still be considered beautiful? Some philosophers have argued that it is precisely the existence of evil and suffering that makes the world beautiful, as it adds depth and complexity to our experience of it. Another possible connection between theodicy and aesthetics is through the concept of free will. Some theodicies argue that the existence of evil and suffering is necessary in order to preserve human freedom. From an aesthetic perspective, free will can be seen as a necessary component of beauty, as it allows for creativity, spontaneity, and unpredictability.

Some similarities with you. This Bangladeshi philosopher turned atheist after he was being denied to take a photo of his dead mother. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aroj_Ali_Matubbar

2:05 "He didn't take the Quran Literally. And of course that is in line with Ismaili beliefs to not take the outer meaning of the quran but the inner meaning." That's simply beautiful and often overlooked by the mainstream Sunnis. It is stated in the Quran in Ali Imran [3:7] that some verses are allegorical. In Islam, there is an esoteric tradition called "Batin" which majority of the muslims simply ignored for only the exterior teachings and rituals. By looking through the esoteric lens, it changes how you perceive things. Eg. Did moses ever parted the red sea? Or was it more of a metaphor for something else? Then again we can't know how valid the ancient texts are but we're able to feel the emotion and history behind those stories while staying rooted to our current reality. However I do accept the possibility that a book can be changed or tampered with just as all objects are subjected to change and destruction. The quran is abit of an enigma to me sometimes. Some parts do makes sense while some doesn't at all and that can turn out to be contradictory. So there is a possibility of the quran being tampered with, and no one truly knows the truth of the authentic state of the book.

@Ibrahim Awad What a coincidence. I've always suspected Uthman to be the real culprit, he was from a rival tribe after all, the Quraish. I've heard things about him ordering the burning of all recorded transcripts of Muhammad's preaching other than the questionable "versions" he approved and compiled, and later known to be the Uthmani Quran that we have today. The way I see it is, Islam spread rampantly through conquest after Muhammad's death and it contradicts the idea of a peaceful religion. I'd like to think that the verses on warfare ect are those that got exaggerated and innovated to fit the agendas of those so called "muslims" at the time. If Tasawuuf(Islamic spirituality) came from Muhammad, then I believe he wouldn't have condoned such things. For all we know the true Quran died with him and the only true Quran was in his mind. Whatever that is written on paper can be changed to fit one's liking and there was nothing he can do to prevent it, because he's dead. The notion of God preserving something for an eternity in the material world doesn't make any sense, this is a clear perversion of the scriptures. Everything is subjected to change, that is life, thus that is God's way. In Sufism, if you do not understand what God actually is, you'll be living in the delusions of what you imagine God(Ilah) to be, (شرك Shirk) without clarity(إِيمَان Iman) but only to the fantasies of your blind faith, essentially a كافر‎ Kafir, from the root verb hide or cover. It means that person chooses to stay ignorant as he covers and hides himself in blind faith! From my understanding as a Sufi, God is not a personified deity... "There is no God, But the One who is Not God".

I am surprised about you, being upset regarding having a picture of your dead father. It is to me something I don’t like to have or to keep. The picture of your father alive is very nice ( which carry a better memory). This reaction of yours is strange for the people of faith, who consider death the most accursed a person has to insure, but with it is the hope of eternal life . The teaching of Christ, and Paul is splendid in this regard. Anther lesson of life is to be tolerant to other people’s belief, particularly as it is your father’s faith.
