Marilyn Monroe almost requires no introduction. The iconic star of the silver screen still resonates with the viewing public even 60 years after her untimely death. But do we need to rethink her legacy or how she's been portrayed?
Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Karen McGann certainly thinks so. Her new docu-series Reframed: Marilyn Monroe rethinks the legacy of one of the greatest icons of the 20th century's popular culture. Although in the media she was portrayed in a certain light, in reality Marilyn may have been a feminist trailblazer well ahead of her time. In CNN's Marilyn Monroe series, Karen explored the strategic ways Marilyn pushed her career forward, the intelligence behind her persona, and the complex nature of her life.
“We think we know the story of Marilyn Monroe, we have a very fixed point of view of her, and this documentary is about looking at her story from a more feminist perspective.” - Karen McGann

Marilyn Monroe gets to be a complex person. The very thing Hollywood and men did not want to acknowledge. And yet, those figures who tried to hold her down are forgotten , and Marilyn Monroe’s authenticity and voice has transcended and lived on despite Hollywood trying to minimize her power and depth. My respect to her!

Marilyn would be the most surprised at her enduring effect and interest. She really wanted love and respect as an artist.

If you hear what the paramedic that was on the scene ( he took 14 polygraph tests about his version of the story) has to say about what happened after Marilyn was found and if you read the autopsy report which says no pils were found in her stomach I’m having a very difficult time believing her death was an accident. Sadly on one will ever know for sure what actually really happened that awful night. She was is and will always be an Icon and I believe that that is the best way to remember her and honor her memory ❤️

There are esteemed workers on the MIsfits and other films stating that MM was addicted to barbiturates and other pills. Sadly she was a addict and died of an overdose

This series left out so much. Of course CNN keeps the narrative that Monroe wasn’t killed. Fails to mention certain people that played massive roles in her life which ultimately lead to her death. Some parts of this were great, as Marilyn was not a victim her whole life. She was an empowered, intelligent woman. But any true fan and admirer of Marilyn knows how fragmented and incomplete this series is. She was murdered. Period.

Honestly a bunch of feminists re-writing the life of Monroe. They are delusional if they believe she was deliberately late on set, deliberately fluffed her lines to get the scene re-shot. MM was always harping on about wanting to be taken seriously so why would she fluff lines and show up late. The JFK scene is shocking, especially as I heard for the first time she’d spent weeks rehearsing (to sing happy birthday!!. She deliberately turned up late. These women again back her up for leaving her film set (which was already behind schedule and losing money due to her constant lateness) to sing at her lover’s birthday bash. This should be called ‘re-writing Marilyn Monroe: a feminists view’ sadly the JFK performance backfired. Just look at her. Even funnier is the woman saying the performance was MM showing the studio her ‘power’. E.g I don’t need you, you need ME. As we know MM was sacked by the studio. 😂

Blaming the victim for her demise is never good. We must always put the responsibility where it needs to be, which is on the perpetrators.

Marilyn was a tragic figure. She used her looks to become famous. She wanted respect, yet used the very thing that garners no respect to get it. How could she be surprised about not getting it? She was sensational in many ways, and I'm not trying to say she wasn't clever or didn't have a good heart or values. Hollywood is creepy. No surprises there. There were actresses that used sex appeal to get ahead, but not to tragic end. Many others did end tragically like Marilyn. Marilyn is not an example of a successful life. After all she committed suicide at 36. No children, home, or friends at the end. Did she make strides for women? Perhaps. She certainly made a name for herself, and her entity still has commercial value. Not exactly a role model. btw. Marilyn worked hard, and acted well for how she was used-for the record. What I do believe is she didn't get the psychiatric help she needed if that was even possible. Her mother was very sick mentally, and institutionalized.

I watched this last night. It took a bunch of feminists most of whom weren't even alive when she was a star, to go on and on about how men misused her to turn Marilyn Monroe , the Premier star of the 20th century, into a boring subject. A documentary made by women featuring women on their particular soapbox. The only creditable speaker was Amy Greene, who's husband was Marilyn's business partner from 1955 to 1957. She told it like it was. The other just hypothesised and attached their own woman's platform onto her. A lot left out. For example when the Misfits was made this programme basically said Arthur Miller destroyed their marriage by re-writing the script and misrepresenting her. Leaving out that prior to arriving in Reno to begin filming she had been conducting an affair with the Costar of her last film Yves Montand.I think this may had had more to do with what destroyed the marriage. When she was locked up on Payne Whitney it never mentioned she called Joe Dimaggio to help get her out. That would have gone against the narrative that they were trying to spin that she was totally in control of her destiny.. I love Miss Monroe, but leaving out facts to support your narrative is a disservice to your viewer and does not give a rounded view of your subject. As I said apart from listening to Amy Green it got boring and repetitive after a while. Some good personal clips not seen before but these are offset by if you want to be lectured for nearly 4 hours.
