The problem with your suggestion, whilst admirable, is that a lot of homeless people on the streets of the UK are there as a consequence of mental health and drug issues which preclude them from hostels, e.g., hostels have a no drugs policy, so unless a homeless person can instantly give up a heroin addiction that has controlled them for the last 10 years, then they are unlikely to secure and keep that place in the hostel.

Simply putting Britain's homeless in a hotel does not address the root cause of why they ended up homeless, i.e., mental health and drugs. The consequence of not addressing the root cause, is that the hotel placement fails and they end up on the streets again. Therefore, the solution is housing in a centre which provides a roof over the head along with intervention for the mental health and drug problems. A room in a hotel, no matter how nice the hotel is, is not a solution to address these problems. In regards to housing the refugees, there should be specific refugee camps offshore, rather than using local hotels to house people of which we don't know the criminal history or background.

alright mr gammon, despite the economy being crap and public spending being reduced its pretty hard/impossible to end up sleeping on the streets. source, I've worked with charities who house homeless people, and i've slept rough. the people who sleep rough, generally speaking have an underlying issue, which means they're too gone in the head to do the paperwork needed to get support, or their social network has broken down due to abuse problems etc. you say 'but they were in the army', but remember there are plenty of people who leave the forces dont end up homeless, the person in your unit who keeps bring down the rest of the unit cause they dont pull their weight, back then you'd give them some stick and punishment, why should you suddenly care about them now?. like all other occupations there will be 0.01 percent who have alcohol problems or severe mental health problems which makes them candidates who will fall victim to homelessness, its not nice, but everytime you help them with a bed or counciling, they will fuck things up again and be back on the street and then people like you start yapping about refugees in hotels which dont help.

@@matthewfranklin8379It isn't "only" the government's responsibility, but charity begins at home, so how can it be right that the tax payer funds non-UK citizens to sleep in a hotel but UK citizens have to sleep on the pavement. House the homeless then provide accommodation to the rest of the world. Most of the so-called "refugees" are young men of fighting age that chose to run from the Taliban, once the West stopped sending their soldiers to kill and die on their behalf. If Brits had all ran from the Nazis and become "refugees" there would have been no Britain for the world and his wife to come to for their free hotels.

Homeless for 15 months myself, it's a jungle! The area I'm in I would be paying near three days wages for something very small private and council tax, and the council have purposefully not followed procedure and treated me disrespectfully. But I'm pushing on and will get something sorted.
