The plaintiff says the defendant is his ex-girlfriend. He’s suing her because he claims she owes him money for the engagement ring he bought her, which she refuses to return. The defendant says she moved in with the plaintiff not long after his wife of 35 years died. She claims the ring was a gift and wasn’t a proposal.

Unpopular opinion: she used him. She sought him out after his wife dies. She moves in. She took over his place and displaces him to another room on a futon. Accepts an engagement ring, "that's not an engagement ring." Ends the relationship. Stays for year and a half. Keeps the ring and sells it. He's a simp, but she definitely used him.

She calls and gives him condolences for his wife, they start chatting, rekindling a friendship. 3 months later they start dating, falling in love. They move in together, he buys the lady a ring as a gift because he wants to show her that he loves her. After 6 months, they start arguing everyday, things are not good. They break up. She's clearly a gold digger. I agree with the plaintiff that it was an engagement ring, but the fact that he "let her keep it" after they broke up (and I do believe the defendant on that), I think it was, in the end, a gift. The plaintiff didn't dispute her testimony about him and the jeweler trying to sell the ring for her and letting her keep the money (if their deal had gone through). They probably would have gotten their cut, too, had it sold. As for her selling it later for $800 because "the diamond was cracked," I don't believe that. I think she either still has it (it was a beautiful ring) or she got more $$ for it than she said.

My aunt passed away a few years ago of cancer. Within a month of her passing, my uncle proposed to three different women! Needless to say, he got rid of all of the family photos, including pictures of my cousin (his son), got brand new furniture, and is collecting my aunt's pension as she was a school teacher, all while married to the third woman he proposed to. It's just sad!

That reminds me of Dog the Bounty Hunter proposing to that lady on tv just after his wife died 😬 🤦🏼‍♀️ So awkward and sad. Some men of a certain era need a woman to take care of them. When we were kids my mother used to get sick a lot and my father was useless without her. We’d go to school with dirty wrinkled uniforms and inedible lunches, I’d have a ponytail on the side of my head and we ate dry fried ground beef for dinner every night. He would have done the same thing if he lost her.

@@blondesense1708 I'm so sorry you went through that! That's terrible! For his part, he hadn't spent nearly the time to grieve before he moved on, I think he was looking for a 2.0 to replace his late wife. The part that bothers me, is that he stated this woman was his soul mate, an odd statement to make after 34 years of marriage.

Well hopefully he learned a valuable lesson... not from the verdict but from the whole situation. You can’t rush into love, especially when you’re emotionally unstable. Take time to grieve and to redefine yourself in the absence of your loved one. It would’ve been better to just cultivate a friendship for support and move to romance after processing his loss and getting to know the lady better platonically.
