Regency Accessories you can make in under 2 hrs || bonnet, jewelry, and reticule handbag

I'm continuing my never-ending quest of making a full regency wardrobe. This time I'm tackling more accessories - a new straw bonnet, coral necklace and a silk reticule with pearls. All these projects can be completed in just a few hours (if you hustle because you have to finish before your baby wakes up from her nap...). Most of my supplies came from my stash but it's easy to find supplies for all of these projects.

When my baby was small, I found my sewing time "vanishing", and about that time I found a book by Nancy Ziemann called, "5,10, 15 minutes to Sew". I learned to set up my projects so that I could sew one seam, cut out one pattern piece or iron one sewn dream at a time. I learned this so well in my 30s that I still do it in my 60s, because life never gets less complicated. Once in a while I have a whole sewing day... and that's a great luxury.

That's a good tip! Even when I cant sit and sew I try to "prep" or clean up my work space so I can jump in to sewing when I actually do have time. "Vanishing" is definitely an appropriate term to describe my time these days.

I do a similar thing due to chronic illness fatigue. If it takes 2 minutes or less, just do it (a la 1950s housewife manual). It's amazing how much gets done across the day in tiny bursts 😊

Im a pretty regular dude, who was in the military. I dont know how to sew & know nothing about dress making. I find these videos fascinating for the historical context it gives me for things like early photo date identification. Now I am wanting to make a dress for my wife. What are you doing to me lady? lolololol Good stuff, add more historical context as thats my favorite.

I made the Reticule. Technically I made 2 of them. So fun! Yes I own a sewing machine, but hadn't used it in years. I also used a regular old tape measure to figure it out and it STILL worked. The first one took me like 3 hours because I was figuring it all out and kept stitching over the two inch gap and relearning to use my sewing machine. BUT the second one took me about an hour. So great for beginners. Thank you for the video!

I'm remembering the little project kits my mum made for my little sister and I (we were children who didn't nap) so she could sew. Blunt/plastic tapestry needles, felt shapes, yarn, Ikea-esque picture instructions 😂 we had some pretty janky Christmas decorations 😅

@@DixieDIY she definitely did 😂 so many sundresses and adorable outfits for us. She also put a lot of her fabric scraps into our playbox so we could play "dressmakers" for our dolls. I think we eventually made them into quilt blocks while we were reading the Little House and American Girl Felicity books. My mum was a savant of amusing small children 🤣

Sewing with kids can definitely be a challenge. I have a baby gate on my sewing room door so that my toddlers (twins) can see me. It really helps. Obviously, I have to be ready to drop and run. But carving the you time out is important and kids learning to play alone is as well. My sewing time is needed for my sanity because I've got 5 kiddos. Everything is lovely! Good luck!

I may need to graduate to baby gate across the door. I let her roam around within eyesight upstairs and she has toys in my room. But now she's learned to beat the drawer locks and can climb onto the desk 😣 thanks for the ideas and the empathy!

Play clothes! And accessories too, you have made my evening. I decided I needed a new Recency wardrobe and fell into the KZfaq costuming rabbit hole and ended up on your doorstep. Thank you for your cheerful presentations. I remember the frantic activity during nap time, there were times that I could almost keep my little ones entertained long enough to finish a project...it gets even more exciting when they catch the costume bug and want new thing, for tomorrow.

This is the clearest tutorial I've sent on patterning and construction of a reticule. Most people brush over it because they are 'simple'.

These are great tutorials! I don't have a toddler anymore but I definitely have limited sewing time, so it's great to see these happen within a short amount of time!

That necklace will pair beautifully with your new gown. I watched that video before this one and thought of it immediately when you started your necklace. Red is perfect to go with the trim and shot in the silk. I too remember the days when I had to sew during naps or late at night. Worst mistake: Trying to make a black and grey tweed tiny houndstooth jacket after dark.

Loving all these quick accessories!!! And honestky, historically women have been doing thr fake it till u make it approach. Slubby fabric fir handbags wouldve been 100% accurate because nobody will judge you on a purses material. Give yourself slack and grace 😉😁

To stop satin ribbons from fraying you can also just melt the ends over a flame, we learned to do that with our ballet shoes. Just make sure that you only melt the fabric edge (and don't burn it or it will discolour.)

@@DixieDIY I believe rayon actually burns, depending on fiber content, so I would do a test on it first🤔

Could I machinesew a reticule in a little over one hour? Yes I could. Could I handsew one in about one day? Yes, I could. Do I have eneugh fabric for at least 5 or 6 reticules? Yes, I do. Have I watched a bunch of videos about reticules latelly? Yes I have. With patterns included or easy explanations on how to draft one? Of course! Am I sewing a reticule? No, because I like to complicate things and for the last week I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out the pattern of a reticule I fell in love with and only found one picture of it. 🤔

@@DixieDIY no, but those are very interesting too. I'm not even using fabric... I'll eventually use fabric to line it, but I'm trying to find out the first row in a crochet reticule, I've made one but it came out great to keep an easter egg, my smartphone is a bit bigger than that 🤣🤣

Great job! I feel you with the one nap thing, our beb is just transitioning from two naps to one and it's chaos. Also, you remind me of one of the Austen adaptations character in this dress and bonnet, but I can't quite put my finger on it... I haven't binged my collection in such a long time... :D
