I got it right for all pictures that were taken at full opening, the rest was pure luck. (honestly, what's the difference between pictures taken at f/2.0 with the f/2 lens or with the f/0.95 lens? Optically, the difference should be zero)

I recognized all f2 pictures on this video as i am using it. I’ve switched to Fuji system early this year and I picked f2 over f1.4 as it is faster, smaller and sharp. I am so impressed with its performance and I don’t need any wider aperture for my taste.

I guessed nearly every one of the first 10-15 shots, then started to struggle a bit more. I’m inclined to buy the fast aperture versions (16mm, 23mm 56mm), but I am really pleased that my one exception was the 35mm f/2. I actually find it sharper than the 1.4 - also in this video - and the bokeh and falloff is rather pleasing and not overdone when wide open. The other stellar f/2 lens is the 90mm, though harder to nail focus.

I didn't see any review video of these lenses until now and couldn't see any major difference between the photos. And most people won't, I would choose the 35mm f2.0, it has AF and it's the smallest, lightest and 99% same image quality.

I got 17 right... honestly it was lightning fast... I should have paused. The f/1.4 is a great lens... but I also love the Zeiss Touit 32... I'm less of a fan of the other two, but they are competent lenses except for the distortion in the f/2 which I think was initially over-corrected in software, but since a firmware update for the lens it is now a better performer. Anyway watch out for portraits with the f/2 by not placing any faces near the edge of the frame (where distortion punishes the most). The Touit is a very special lens in terms or ftransparency and 3d pop.... as is the f/1.4

Really practical video for anyone pining over which of these lenses to buy. For 35's, I have the f2 because of its size and video. I was lusting over the Mikaton but I came from Nikon and had a Seiss 100mm f2, 45mm pc-e and Voigtlander 58mm f1.4. I really love those lenses and manual focus, but when I am honest with myself and look at them carefully, it is easy to miss focus and be slightly disappointed with the results. Because of that I would likely get the 35mm f1.4 some day or perhaps the 56mm f1.2 for that narrow depth of field. In the meantime the f2 is great and I will focus on making images instead of gear. Thanks again for a great video. I hope you get lots of subscribers.

Richard Carlson thanks for the comment. Yes, people obsess over side by side comparjsons and reviews. But ultimately, the differences are small in comparison to other factors like lighting, composition, subject matter etc. the f2 will serve you well I’m sure. Had I not needed the absolute most light gathering for weddings, I probably would’ve stuck with the f2 as well. Thanks! Hoping I get more Subs as well :). I bet your helper has grown a lot since then! Your photos are great and they really helped put the lenses in perspective. I didn't take the test per se, but I did notice a series of images that stood out, and almost every one was taken with the 1.4. I have the XC-35mm that I really like. I also have the 16mm f1.4 and have shot with the 23mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.2. There's just something special about them, a little magic the f2s don't have. I'll pass on the Mitakon and save up for the 1.4.

I've got to admit that the quality of the F2 surprised me a bit (on the positive side) and the Mitakon was a tad underwhelming. I'm still not regretting that I've chosen the F1.4 though. It still has the nicest rendering (especially in Acros) and for indoor shots I need that F1.4. For better bokeh I actually have an old (dirt cheap) Pentax 50mm F1.4 which does the job for me. A bit less sharp but for 40$ (20 for the used lens and 20 from the adapter) I can take amazing protraits with nice saturated colours, shallow DOF and out of the world bokeh (instead of the pricey 56mm).

So much fun! I got 15/30 5/10 for f2 - 4/10 for f1.4 - 6/10 for f0.95 The f2 surprised me. Sharp all around with great contrast and character. The 1.4 has more bokeh than I thought, but some of its images lacked microcontrast (images 5 and 29 looked washed out and a bit milky to me). Still, seeing that the difference between f1.4 and f0.95 isn't that much (at least for me) I think it's a very good option if you need the shallow DOF and AF.

onegrapefruitlover 5 and 29 are probably more of the lighting conditions (shade) as opposed a lack of microcontrast. Good video Reggie, and good channel in general...I’m sub’d! I’m a recent Fujifilm convert in the way of an XT3 and I’m loving it! I was a dedicated Panasonic shooter for video and Grabbed a Sony A7iii when it came out to mainly step up my portrait game. I’ve since sold the A7iii and replaced it with an A7Rii since it is strictly for portraiture work. But the XT3 is by far my most enjoyable camera to use and I think it will quickly become my main shooter. @AddictiveDissolve
@AddictiveDissolve 4 жыл бұрын
The reason to buy very wide-aperture lenses isn't image quality, it's the wide aperture. f/1.4 produces shallower depth of field, separating your subject from the background, which is a desirable effect in some photos and videos. In more controlled testing, most lenses, especially primes, are found to be sharp at the centre. The bigger possible issue is corner sharpness - but even that isn't really an issue when you only want the centre of the image to be sharp.

@@Reggiebphoto t h ank you so much for your reply Im still undecided between the 35mm f1.4 and f2. I love bokeh - would you say there's much of a difference in bokeh smoothness between those two lenses? The photos you took with the f2 are spectacular So many people are saying to get the f1.4 but if there's not a huge difference in picture quality then I would go for the f2. I need to make a decision this week. Some people are saying there is lens distortion with the f2. The f1.4 people seem to be fanatical about the f1.4. TO the point they make fun of people wanting the f2 😳
@Reggiebphoto
@Reggiebphoto 5 жыл бұрын
KLE RAIN if you like focusing up close, then the 1.4 can focus closer than the f2. This is the main reason why you can achieve more bokeh in the 1.4 - as getting closer to the subject creates more bokeh. Both lenses are great and if you don’t shoot in super low light, then the f2 is pretty awesome. I know this isn’t that helpful but you’re choosing between two good lenses so you can’t really go wrong.

Reggie Ballesteros thank you! I think my only concern is the autofocus speed if a sibling is involved-especially with my xt2...can’t wait till I can afford the xt3!

the Mitakon is very good, the fuji 35mm f2 is very sharp , the 35mm 1.4 has soul

I keep hearing about the soul of the Fuji 35 1.4...may need to replace my 35 F2.

Yeah, some people call it soul. I call it microcontrast and good close focusing ability haha

Hi i just discovered your videos, great content, great photos thank you very much ! i just have one small question, i’m myself a proud owner of a fuji X-T3 that i use for video a lot too and the small problem i have with it is the noise that my lenses makes when autofocusing, it’s clearly audible in the video and i’m not liking it. Which lens do you use as i can’t seem to hear any autofocusing motor noises in your videos ? Thank’s a lot !

the key to not having the lens AF be picked up in the audio, is to have an external microphone. I use a rode videomicro for all my videos. it's super cheap and really helps to inprove the audio (and avoid hearing the af noise!) amzn.to/2NQ1cEM

Reggie Ballesteros okay. i have a rode VideoMic Pro, the first version of it and when it sits on my camera i can still hear perfectly the noise of my 23mm 1.4 lens autofocusing :/ I could use an extension cord and a second tripod to get the microphone away from the camera but i don’t want to.

@@delarageaz hmm the external mike is what does it for me. i use the 16mm 1.4 for most of my videos which has the same kind of af motor as the 23 1.4.

10/30 statistics hehe 4/10 f2, 2/10 f1.4, 4/10 Mitakon I own 35/2 and have used almost every other fuji prime (only missing 23/2 and 35/1.4) It was pretty hard for me to differentiate 1.4 and 0.95 ones

Thanks very much, this video is very helpful. I hoped to go for the XF 35 F2, but some of the the pictures from the 1.4 are very special and magic, you can see it directly in an instant....I hope the AF is fast enough for my X-T20

Lol love this your baby is so cute he has a like from me and those ones who put a thumb down shame on you. You know what a bit off topic but I was a single father brought up my two daughters on my own, love every day of it, I know you have a partner, but its real nice to see you putting your boy first … you’re a great man..

Ken Cox thanks my friend. Means a lot. My wife is out traveling this week for work, so it’s me and the two kiddos for five days and it’s a hellava task. Kudos to you. Some days are hard but like you said love every minute of it. Thanks for the comment!
