You didn’t cover high value comics. For comics valued over $3,000 CGC wants to charge 3% of market value. I can’t find anyone discussing how wrong this is. Why does the grading company get to take a cut of the value of the comic. I feel this is BS because now CGC has a say so if the value of the comic when they should only have a say so in the grade. What do they base the 3% fee off of, the Overstreet Guide? I’m considering going with a different comic grading company because I don’t like how CGC is monopolizing the high end market (above $3k).

Wrong? It’s an optional service. You decided to submit or not. Put another way, no one is forcing you to grade your comics. CGC isn’t the only company that does this if you take a few moments to think. The value sharing, let’s call it, is built into the tiers themselves. You just see it with high value books because they call it out. You can go to CBCS but they also do it. High value things are almost always “taxed” a little more. Try registering a nice car in certain states-you actually pay more than someone registering a cheaper car. People with more income get taxed more. Have a bigger house, you pay more for everything. Hope this helps.

Have you stopped to consider why grading companies for example charge more for these high value books? Could it be that their costs are higher for higher value books so they charge more? For example, the liability associated with a $30 book and a $3000 book are very different. If something goes wrong with a book in the possession of a grading company they have insurance to cover it. This insurance isn’t free therefore they charge more for those higher value books. Now imagine having thousands of $3000+ books at the same time. Their could also be other reasons but this is the one that readily comes to mind pre-coffee. 😀👊🏾

@@RegieCollects your mixing concepts that aren’t the same. When I get a home appraised for sale do I pay the person appraising it a percentage of its value? No I don’t. The liability while CGC has the comic is the only aspect that has relevance that I can possibly see a reason for the percentage.

Well actually you’re incorrect. Home appraisers actually charge different rates based upon the size and complexity of a home that is being evaluated. It is not based upon the value of the house but more expensive houses tend to be larger and more complex-so maybe it is connected. 😃 I’ve taken a couple of real estate and appraiser courses. I’ve also owned about 15 homes. With that said, let’s dig deeper. A home appraisal is an assessment of value based upon comparison properties. The appraisal itself adds zero value to the property unlike a grade assigned to a comic. When a third party grading company inspects a comic and gives it a grade, that grade translates into value. Look at the prices between raw and graded comics. No such value increase is seen when looking at homes. Lastly an appraiser isn’t guaranteeing anything unlike CGC. The keyword is guaranty in the name. They are literally guaranteeing that the books grade, condition is what they say. And, as mentioned this is part of the reason for the higher prices.

I cited the examples of cars and houses to paint the picture of things that I don’t understand unlike CGC charging higher rates for expensive comics. An expensive comic has more risk so they charge more. I don’t like it but I get it. An expensive car however does not damage a road any more than a cheaper car. Hope this helps.

Sometimes it’s a good thing like some keys you might randomly find in a dollar bin then spend 30-40 and get it graded and cased and it be worth hundreds. I think it’s maybe better for people that want to resell them

You are very welcome. This video is a little old as CGC has updated the website and process a few times. With that said, a lot of what’s covered in this video is still applicable. This is a great overview. Take a lesson from me, if your going to take the time/money to submit the book for slabing ALWAYS get your books pressed. I can’t emphasize this enough. Get the best grade. You can also submit nots to say things like “if this book isn’t at least x grade, don’t grade”. Some books are better off not getting a grade if your going to resell.

Does the quick press recommendation also apply to brand new, never handled comic books? I have several virgin cover variants that I haven't cracked open the plastic on and plan to get them graded. Wondering if it is still worth it then. Thanks in advance.

@@RegieCollects My LCS doesn't ever sell slabbed books so I doubt they have a membership lol. Also don't have any friends heavy into comics so I may just get my own membership. I have a fairly small collection as I just started collecting 3 or 4 years ago so I don't have a lot of books at this point that I want to slab. Just enjoying learning about it all and hunting for deals!

LukeNewb Ah ok. Got it. I typically recommend people go with the premiere membership. It’s $150 but you get a credit on the account for that same amount which makes it free in my mind. Or, if you’re submitting modern books for grading/pressing you can get ~5 books encapsulated for free. The membership also is for a year. I’m pretty sure that you’ll find a way to purchase and slab more books during that time. If you decide to do it, consider using the link in the description. With that said, it’s your money and your collection so do what you feel is right! 👍🏾👍🏾

Hello Regis new subscriber here! Really liking the videos. I stopped collecting about 20 years ago just started again. There was no CGC when I stopped so this video was very helpful. I have an Amazing Spider-Man #583 (Obama Variant) 1st print signed by Stan Lee but not graded. My question is in regards to COA. Since I have the COA, does that get included with the book inside the slab (maybe on the back cover or is kept separate) and would I send the COA in with the book during the grading process? Hope that made sense. Great video!

Another great video! Knowing about the turn-around times and how to bundle really helps! Getting ready to submit my first group this week. Question, probably a silly one, but when does the 10% discount hit and also does it apply to the pressing services or just the slabbing? Thank you!

If you did the premiere membership that credit is automatically applied by the accounting team before your card is charged. The 10% discount may be applied automatically when you’re in the portal looking at the estimated prices. I believe that it is only on grading. CGC recently made some changes to prices and portal and I haven’t been able to look into it all. You may actually see “discounted” prices reflected in the video because I may have been logged in when I did those screen grabs. Keep in mind that what you see in the portal is an estimate. The true price will be determined once CGC gets your books and looks them over. Does this help?

You are welcome brother. One of the changes that CGC seems to have made is that pressing isn’t a flat fee anymore. It appears to be based upon the age of the book. This video is more than a year old. CGC has made some changes to various features. I believe that they have factors the books market value into the pricing structure that has been put into place. I did an updated version of this video a few weeks ago but it was a live show and the streams quality was really bad. At the end of the day, once you have a membership, you can log into the portal and mock-up an order to see for yourself what it will cost to have a book graded by CGC. Please let me know if you have any outstanding questions.

Glad you found the video helpful. I’m not sure that CGC is expensive versus grading itself being expensive. There are less expensive options like PGX and EGS but they may not provide you with the same type of value lift that you would get with CGC or CBCS. You also have the option of keeping your book in poly. You don’t have to get them graded at all. It’s totally optional.

With respect to filling out the declared value, you wrote $5 for the ASM 800. I just submitted my first books at the Rhode Island Comic Con and they told me I should max the declared value to the highest amount the insurance covers for modern books which was $200. There was no difference in cost. Also, do you have to have a specific membership to track the status of your comic books? Can free members do this as well? TIA.

Thanks for the comment Ryan. The declared value I entered was just a placeholder for illustrative purposes only. Did they explain why you max out the declared value? I’d like to understand their rationale. I have the Premium membership so I’m not sure what the free offers you. You may have to call to verify with them.

Awesome video! Had a question how are you able to submit multiple books especially for the quick press which says it’s a minimum of 15 books? Because the drop down for the title of the books doesn’t give you the option to input more than 1...?

Submit the books individually and select quick press for each. The books are held in the cart. The cart must contain 15 books to met the requirement. Does this help?

If you go with a membership that gets a 150$ credit, do you know if you have to use that all at once? Or can I use like 100$ and then next time I submit more books use the last 50$? I planned on sending in just a few for the first time so I can kind of get a feel for the process before sending in some really valuable ones.

Does the options about higher valued books matter? I have 2 Spiderman #129's and assume they are worth more than $5. Will the grading be different depending on what I put the value is? Thanks for the vide, super informative for someone newer at this

Cgc has processes in place to isolate your books from others. With that said, I have heard about at least one mistake being made and it was corrected. On that note, you should always take photos and video of your book when they are outside of your control.

The quick press has a 15 book minimum whereas the full press does not have a minimum. Just pick the full press option and you should be good. Do you already have your membership?

You are welcome. The tier is determined by the age of the comic and the speed of service. The portal guides you through your options based upon the book and selections that you make. It’s pretty streamlined.

Regie, I took your advice and asked CGC to combine multiple submissions to into one package when shipping it back to me. But now I’m finding that submissions I sent in later, are actually being shipped back to me sooner than those earlier ones. Do you know if they HOLD those combined submissions and do not update the grades online until it ships?

I'm not sure that I have given that guidance. I have told people to put like-kind books on the same invoice but I don't know anything about asking CGC to hold and combine shipments. To this end, I cannot provide any insight that this approach would have on turn around time.

I have a bunch of books I got signed by Jim Lee at SDDC. How do I get those CGC with yellow SS label? I see some that have green label. How do you get them yellow certified to begin with? Sorry I’m a newbie. Thanks

To get the yellow label CGC or a CGC-certified facilitator needs to physically witness the book getting signed. This often times happens at cons that CGC attends. I want to say that CGC is attending 35 or so cons this year. A facilitator can obtain a signature and yellow label outside of a con for a price. Books that are not witness will get the green label from CGC. Does this help? Also, when you signed up for your membership did you use the link in my videos description?

So I guess I’ll be getting the green label. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed CGC at SDCC. No I didn’t click the link. Didn’t push the down arrow on my phone to see the description. Thank you for the video. The shipping section got really confusing. I will rewind and watch again. I do have one question, how do you determine the value of the book? You are asked by CGC to determine the value as part of the submission process. Is that determined by the cover price of the comic?

It’s been a few years since I watched this video but what was confusing about the shipping? Valuation is a tricky one. You can guesstimate the grade of the book and look that grade up in a raw book pricing guide (ComicsPriceGuide.com). Some determine value based upon purchase price, acquisition costs or replacement cost of the comic. You have to decide what makes sense for you. So when getting a quick press, 15 book minimum, can you get 15 books pressed but only 3 or 4 books graded? Or do you also have to get those same 15 graded?

CGC/CCS doesn’t just press books. The books will be pressed for the purpose of grading.

Hey Regie, new subscriber, like your videos. In the video I saw that the tier/cost depends on the value of the books, under $200, $1000, etc. 2 questions, which tier do you use if the book is on the fence but you dont know what grade it's going to get. For example a 6.0 will push it over $200 but a 5.5 will be under $200. Second question is how is value determined for those books on the fence. A book at a certain grade in the $200 range will likely sell in the $175 to $225 area. Thanks!

Welcome to the channel. Thanks for the questions. Let's see if I can answer them... To determine the value/tier is guestimation. If I have time, I’ll look at graded books on eBay. I’ll try to compare the condition of my book to one that is already graded. The zoom feature really helps with this comparison. There is no guarantee but you might be able to learn a few things. If you’re look at the different between a 5.5 and 6.0 I’m not sure that this will help because the differences can be minor. Remember that grading is a little subjective. To figure out if you want to send the book or not, you can look at both tiers-the high and the low-to get a feel. Or, you can just look at the low because if the numbers make sense there they will absolutely make sense with the higher value of the book. For books on the fence, you might want to look at all costs: shipping, tax, etc. to determine if it makes more sense to slab or to buy slabbed. Also, how long will you hold the book? Is there a chance that you can get the book for a best offer at a lower price? If the numbers are really close it’s going to be a judgment call. Does this help? Or, did I miss the mark? Let me know.

Well, I have a video on that. 😜 The long and short is that you have to guesstimate the grade and you can look up the value using a pricing guide. The best way to think about declared value is to thing about it in term of insurance. How much will it cost you to replace that book if lost or damaged. When cgc charges you for return shipping i assume they bundle that cost. In other words if i send 15 modern books together all with quick press....so nothing abnormal or different...do theyjust bundle one shipping charge or do they bill you shipping on each separate book?

Books on the same tier (age)/level of service will be shipped together. Value tier and age are pretty closely link but that can be thrown off if one book is fast tracked or pressed and cleaned and the others are not. Hopefully this makes sense.

Hey. I need help. I owned a couple of cgc 9.8 and I was holding 6 of them and I accidentally dropped them all. 5/6 got damaged badly, but the they are still sealed. The parts that are damage are the top and bottom of the case. If I get an exchange, will it get the same grade or? Because I was thinking if the book went in at a certain grade and it came back lower, isn’t the CGC or the other grading companies should be held accountable?

You should be able to resubmit it as a “reholder.” This allows the case to be changed without regrading the book. You will need to resubmit the entire book in the broken case to CGC.

How do I know if my comic is less than $200? If a press jumps my comic from a 9.6 to a 9.8 that can be a difference of value in $100 or more with many books

Grading is $20 for a modern book. Shipping depends upon how you ship it to CGC and how you opt to have it shipped back to you. I can’t estimate those costs for you because I don’t know where you live and the shipper you will use. You will have costs for a membership so that should be factored in as well. You should also consider getting the book pressed to improve the grade. Does this help?

You can use GoCollect to help with graded values. I use ComicsPriceGuide.com for raw book pricing. Tier is determine by the age and of the book. It is also influenced by the speed in which you want the book back. The age is what it is. The value is determined based upon your guesstimation of the grade. The speed is also something you control. It should also be noted that the CGC portal helps to guide you. This video is more than a year old and the portal has been updated a few times. Message me on IG if you want to talk more. I have a few books that are Virgin cover, where do I get all the info they are asking for an specific comic book? Do I need to fill out the info completely? Thanks in advance Regie.

The system is a massive database so a lot of that information will be captured in the system so your options will be limited if you will based upon your inputs. For example, if you enter ASM 1 they system will present you with dates for all of the ASM 1s in the system and you pick on. You may have to do a quick google search on some information because you might not know but do the best that you can to complete the forms. At the end of the day, CGC checks all the details on their side once the books are received. Here is a video that has some information that might help you with you first question: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p89kjJN5yLe0c40.html It's hard for me to tell you how much the book will cost without know if you need the books cleaned/pressed and how you intend to ship them. You might want to assume $35 but that could be plus or minus depending up the services you select. You can try to add a premium if you want but a lot of people have pricing guide and they should look up the FMV of the book to determine how much to pay.
