REGRETS: TRAVELING WITH KIDS

Hey Shayla

Hey Shayla

Күн бұрын

We recently went on a Staycation in Minnesota that was a bit of a fail.
Would I do it again? YES!
Did we learn a lot? ALSO YES!
I think it's super important to do these trips with our kids. Yes, it's a lot of work for us and yes, they might not remember. But what they will learn is how to be patient, how to improvise and how to find a great adventure out of a nature walk.
Highly recommend doing this (and learning along the way!)

I’m a single mom and when my son was about 5 weeks old and my daughter was 2.5, I decided we HAD to get out of the house for the night. On a whim, I rented a hotel room a couple hours away that had a cool pool area indoors and we headed out. My son cried most of the ride there, but when we arrived, it was a blast. There were a lot of things that were tricky like the fact that I had to lay my son on a pile of towels (he was totally happy with it, and we were the only ones in the pool area) so that I could help and play with my daughter in the pool. He also wanted to nurse the entire time we were out to eat, which made managing the 2 year old and feeding myself tricky 🤣 There were tears on all ends, but my daughter is now 5 and she STILL talks about how cool that trip was. So worth it ❤

Montana girl here 🙋‍♀️ We’ve gone camping multiple times with a 3 month old and 2 year old. Things that have worked for me: 1. Bring as many diapers you think you will need, and then some. Also keep one or two reusable diapers on hand for backup. 2. The more the merrier. More hands more help with little ones. I want to relax too, not just do my normal SAHM work in a different location. Bring the whole village. Lol 3. Having pumped milk prepared so others can help with feeds if I wanted to go on a mini adventure, needed a break, or to enjoy a beer. 4. Keep meals simple and easy. My kids gets their veggies most the time. While camping I’ll offer but I’m not going to argue or push it. We are all here to have a good time. 🌭 5. You don’t need a ton of toys. Kids will find things to play with. 6.Sun-hats and a rain coat on standby. I’m sure there is more! But these came to mind first!

Definitely a room with a door! 😂 I love your perspective on this. My husband and I thought we would be the parents that travel the world with our kids and we realized we don't really like it 😂 maybe when they are older

We tried to take our 1 year old camping on two different occasions. Both times we were supposed to stay two nights and both times we left after 1. But i don’t regret trying each time!! It was a wonderful experience both time even though it was chaos!

Great job having an adventure even when things aren't perfect! Kids make things crazy all the time, but they also add this wonder and joy that you don't get with just adults. We love doing all the things we used to without kids, hiking, biking, camping, flying, road trips, and we have just adjusted our expectations and enjoy what we can do. We've noticed that the people who start doing those right away with their babies are the ones who keep doing it. The people who say that they are waiting for their kids to be in whatever future stage always find a new future stage when they reach it. Don't let kids change who you are! Sure, you're miserable a lot of the time, lol, but is everything really perfect at home? No! The chaos comes with the territory, don't let it ruin your chances to enjoy the things you love.

^This! Also thanks for saying that Grace - it's encouraging to this Mama who has tried to keep hiking/biking/roadtripping since baby girl was born. Now just to find some family buddies who don't mind a magical train wreck too. ;)

Love this ❤ the point about “is everything perfect at home?” is such a good point! You’re going to have ups and downs anywhere, might as well be on an adventure during it!

Aaliyah’s reaction to the trip is adorable! It reminds me a lot of how our daughter sees things. My wife & I try to go on frequent short trips & adventures with our daughter Emerson. Things seldom go according to plans, but they always work out great. We recently went on a trip to Holden beach & her favorite part was probably that we had a big bathtub in the corner of our hotel room & she got to play with her Tonka truck in it. She loved the water running on her hands. ❤ Kids are amazing!

We are tent campers, and I knew I wanted to take my 10 month old camping and start building memories this summer. It was suprisingly not as hard as I thought it would be. I know he won't remember it but it gives us good practice traveling with him and I'll have the pictures later! You definitely have to be very go with the flow though, the 4th of July trip we just went on didn't go super smooth, but he enjoyed being in the outdoors especially our hikes!

Shayla I love this!! We just took my 2 year old and baby camping for the first time and I kid you not everything went wrong 🤣 booked the wrong day and had to find a whole other campground, it was far too hot so we were literally half naked in our camp site and went and took a cold shower, kids didn’t go to sleep until 3 hours after their bedtime, chocolate for s’mores had turned to liquid, and we left first thing in the morning lolol. But it was MAGICAL and I can’t wait to do it again hahaha

Your timing is impeccable!! Next month we're taking our first road trip since baby was born and he's a year and a half old 😅 It's going to be hard AND it's going to be great! I'd rather try and figure out how to do challenging things with my son than wait around for things to get easy and watch his childhood pass us by ❤

Can I suggest picking up some puppy pads? They're great for protecting car seats during diaper changes (emergencies happen). We also used them as emergency bibs. If your kiddo struggles with being carsick, they can be used to protect the seat.

My husband and I fell in love traveling too! We did more weekend traveling where we would hike 10 plus miles at a clip. We haven't done anything that long since I got pregnant, but this weekend we finally got back out there. Our baby is 16 months and he actually did really well. We were a little under prepared and there were ups and downs, but you are so right- do the things that you love with your kids and eventually you will learn how to get good at doing them again.

This SO happened to me recently. I took my son on an adventure to the river to “fish”. He has a fishing pole that has like a little plastic fish on the end of it that he can cast and reel into the water. Well 1. The fishing pole broke almost immediately. 2. It the blazing hot. Like blazing. And the river water in Arkansas is absolutely frigid so you can’t like get in and swim to cool off. 3. Alllllll of the bugs 4. I was starving 5. We left after 45 minutes.

Love it! Took my 4 month old on a short flight to see family and it went way better than expected. Last week went camping 3 nights and baby is 6 months. It was colder than I thought and so I didn’t get much sleep keeping baby warm, but still had lots of fun!!

I just got home from our first trip with our 1 year old. 600 miles split in 2 on the way there and drove at night.. it was great. Tried to go straight through on the way home and that was a bad idea. Baby cried and threw up all over himself and there were no open gas stations or vacancies at any hotels for miles. I'd did learn a lot.

Went on a 10 day camping trip with a 18 month old. It was pretty terrible, but not because of the kid. It rained the whole time and there were 10s of thousanda of spongy moth caterpillars everywhere. Turns out I have an allergic reaction to their spines. 😒 We just got back from a 7 day trip to 3 different cities and 7 fun things. It was a work trip for me. They are 3.5 and 17 mos. My sister came to mom while I was working. My parents, despite raising 2 humans, don't know a thing about toddlers and are not willing to try. They came on the trip and it was fine as well. I cooked dinner for 4 nights in a hotel room kitchenette for 7 after working and doing super fun things with my family. Did i sleep? No! Did my kids have the best trip ever? Yes! We floated in a lazy riger, did rides, fed giraffes and budgies, pet elephants and stingrays, raced cheetas, climbed climbers, swam in hotel pools, hiked trails, saw dinosaur bones, met paleontologists, visited nature centers, hiked, played in fountains, went up in a helium balloon, learned about black resistance in Indiana, and drove a total of 20 hrs with kids mostly content.
