One of my favorites to have around. If water is your preferred method, adding liquid plant food can help increase longevity.

I planted a large pot of them about a year ago.... I neglected to water for about 3 months and that shit was still alive. (Dealing with hurricane damage and didn't have time to do little things like watering easily replaceable plants.) I highly recommend them for beginners. Not only is it very hard to kill but the stalks can be harvested over and over giving the budding gardener the positive motivation to continue.

I frequently go weeks without watering them. That's why I say it's lower maintenance than water, which has to be changed every few days

Very cool! Good to know. This video reminded me, why haven't I tried this, yet? 😁 Another easy one is mint. But it spreads! So make sure to plant it somewhere away from anything you don't want taken over! When I was 11 we moved into a house that had mint growing along the back fence. That was perfect since it was at the bottom of the yard with just grass and trees around, maybe some bushes. There were more flowering plants and beds closer to the house. (Not a giant yard, but a long rectangle.) That mint got no attention unless we were cutting some, or 10 years later when my Mom got remarried, my step-Dad who loved gardening started battling some of it back. 😂 Now 40+ years since we had moved there and it's still growing strong.

@@MD-fl6kj when preparing green onions in the kitchen I cut off a half an inch or less of the bulb end (where the roots are attached). This is usually just trash but you can regrow them. @@nmpoy as you cut and grow off of it little bulbs will grow off of the top every so often let them grow until they start to kind of grow roots and then poke them in the ground. So when your other ones get too old and stop growing so well you can pull them out and still continue. But also remember to change the dirt every so often because your plants will the their dirt will start to become hydrophobic which means they won't take water right. But eat off of them like normal. But I just let it grow and pull off of it and eat off of it and continuously use it and replace it every so often cuz some parts of it do become too old because like the main part of my plant literally turns three and I'm probably going to have to replace the main part of my plant here soon with one of its babies.

If you let a couple flower inside of the flowers, they will start shooting new bulbs. You can pop the bulbs off the flowers and replant them straight into the ground and they will route within 2 to 3 days.

Someone I know gave me some green onions they salvaged from a recycling bin from behind a grocery store. They were almost trash and I gave them life in my window. It’s been months they’re still thriving and even flowering 🌱🌸 I’m so happy for them 😅

Funnily enough, this is one of the few crops my mom doesn't grow on her garden. She will have 15 pumpkins and hand out tomatos to anyone who will speak to her, but has to run to the store for spring onions 😂

i cannot seem to make mine grow! they sprout and then start to get weak and die! i have tried both ways, in water and in potting soil. i have tried putting them in the window sill to get some sunlight during winter because they dont last long on the kitchen counter but they also eventually start dying... 😪

Do you prune them? As in peel off the older, more outside leaves. And make sure the young fresh parts remain.

I had a ton in my garden and I was going to throw some out . I tossed them in a bin, but forgot about them because it got cold. We’ve had a lot of rain this year . Well now I have full grown green onions. 🤣🤣

One is in a raised bucket and the other is in a cup. Probably would look about the same if you put them on the same level
@gardeningindoors

There was about a 3" difference when held at the same level but height comparison wasn't the intention. They grow fast in both methods, but soil provides nutrients that increases lifespan, improves flavor and it doesn't need to be watered that often. Water is fine but has to be changed every few days, accentuates the onion smell, makes them slimy, flavor is less prominent after multiple harvests and the color will eventually fade to yellow. If water is a preferred method, I recommend adding a liquid plant food to retain flavor and get more harvests.

I grew up on a farm. chickens are kinda the same way. you find one and stick it's feet in the ground till it can't move. usually within a few days baby chickens start developing like dragon fruit haha. great video btw
