I rode in those rear facing buckets down miles of dusty dirt road to my school as a kid. When we got there, I was completely coated in a nice layer of brown. I wish I could go back and do it again. Still want one of these so bad. Prime STI swap candidate for me.

Mr. Regular being dirty, unhinged, and out of the box. If you're gonna be uptight about poop jokes, get out, don't watch, unsub. Some of us remember this channel when every review was dirty, and made you go "oh god". These are fairly popular in Australia where they were sold as the Subaru Brumby. It's becoming pretty common to see them over here with a full wrx/sti drivetrain and engine swap with large turbos hanging off them.

I always enjoy your reviews. Interesting insight, lots of extreme close up shots, and great comedy. I owned one of these Brats - purchased new in 1982. It had single headlight on each side plus a third hidden headlight behind the center badge. It was a VERY expensive car for the day - over $9000, when you could get a new Toyota truck for just over $5000. It was nosey, slow, and could get squirrely if you stomped on the brakes, but I always love the looks of it and it was a great car. The seat belts in the back were standard, and it was legal to ride back there at the time (even at fwy speeds), and they had head rest you could adjust to prevent you from bashing your head against the roof. I had it for 9 years until.I traded it away for some other quirky car (1991 Mercury "Crap pre"). Anyways, thanks again for the memories of the Brat.

It's kind of funny to see all the folks that got on the RCR bandwagon late whining about poop jokes where people who were in pre-dead-echo are just like "heh, poop". provides a nice contrast.

I was still a mechanic when Subaru stopped production of these. Here in Britain, they weren't called the Brat, and i can't remember what they were called here, other than the Subaru 4x4 pick-up. They were just sold as utility vehicles here, as the two rear seats weren't an option, obviously due to safety issues. But farmers especially loved these things, being 4x4 and just big enough to chuck a few straw bales or a sheep or two in the back. As the garage i was working in, at the time, was in a pretty rural area, we used to get many of the local farmers bringing theirs in for MOT's and services, most of the time covered in mud and various types of animal shit too, lovely! But, they all loved these things so much, as there was nothing else like it, that when Subaru announced they were to stop production, many of these guy went out and bought 2-3 brand new ones, and kept them under wraps in one of their barns. They'd just drive these things into the ground, then park them up, once thoroughly knackered, then unwrap a new one. It kinda made sense, as they were so versatile, compact and a fraction of the price of a new Land Rover.

And for the record, I live in South Carolina, and a co-worker friend of mine bought one of these in yellow several years ago- and the insurance company had an extra page in his policy for him to sign, which stated he would never allow anyone to ride in the back seats at all. And that was even to just get liability

I was nine when my mom bought a new Brat in '80. I loved riding in the rear seats back then. Yes, those are factory seatbelts. The fun ended when my mom took the rear seats out so she could haul more compost or whatever. I've heard that there were lawsuits against Subaru from ppl who were injured while riding in the rock-hard rear seats while off-roading. Duh!

My grandparents had a Brat in the early 80's when I was a kid. And yes, riding in the back seats was as fun as it gets.
