If the Lotus Elise was a person, it would be that jerk who eats nothing but fried rice and city chicken, yet never gains a pound. The Elise is also the gate keeper between daily-use cars that are kinda fast (Honda S2000) and dedicated sports cars (Elise). Once you drive one of these...oh man...like Like Skywalker swinging at that remote with the blast-shield down...Regular Car Reviews has taken a first step into a larger world.

Have to admit. If you get yourself a car that looks so rich, and is associated with rich culture. No matter how much of a bargain you've got it for. People will think you're a fucking a baller. I own a 97' C5 Corvette. Got it salvaged (Yup. A fender bender Vette) for around 8,700 bucks. After parts. Added up to a total of $9,679.88. Got a major, deal. Over 200,000 miles. But. People seems to think that I'm "Mister Money Bags". When I stop in a lower class neighborhood, I constantly get people asking for handouts. And then the looks. Oh god the envious looks. It's like. "I'm living such a crappy life, yet I've got the rich scum sucker pulling up next to me, in his fancy little Vette. Yeah buddy fuck you!" And they try their best, to not let me notice. But I do. They assume I'm an overly privlaged rich guy, when in reality I'm just as dirt poor as they are. When you get yourself a high classed sports car. No matter how little money you've spent on it. How much of a bargain it is. How old it is. How much it's sucking you dry financially. People are still going to think you're some millionaire, who makes more money a minute. Then they ever will in 10 life times. * sigh * That's pretty much why I rather be driving my Miata on a daily basis...
@UluvDuddes
@UluvDuddes 10 жыл бұрын
Its so true. Your average person assumes some cars are super expensive when really you can get them for 1/2 if not 1/3 of what they originally thought. I bought a viper and people think im rolling around in 100k dollar car. The looks are always interesting. I hate stopping at gas stations and sometimes I get the dirtiest looks if its not the "right" gas station. For a daily I have a 96 volvo 850 turbo and in that thing I get looks of you cheap poor piece of shit. So one car its "you rich fuck head" and in the other car its "you poor dirty almost homeless bum".......... I cant win!!!
@krocialblack
@krocialblack 10 жыл бұрын
UluvDuddes I bet those looks aren't as bad as mine. I'm young. I'm black. I'm male. And I'm living in Mississippi. You can imagine what kind of pissed off lench mob looks I be getting. But that isn't as bad as people asking for handouts, or waitresses at restaurants trying to recommend the most expensive stuff on the menu... Because they happen to have seen you pull up in your "flashy and expensive ride". But you hit the nail right on the head.
@gophop
@gophop 10 жыл бұрын
That's because people who think like that don't understand cars. Majority of the pedestrian, camcord-driving population sees cars as an evil necessity. They know nothing about cars, they hate driving and suck at it, and they can't fathom the idea of anyone spending as much money every month on a car as they do on fast food, Starbucks, and cable. That's why I just ignore anything car related coming out of the mouths of car-ignorant people.
@krocialblack

gophop The looks on those peoples faces when I tell them, my insurance rates on my Corvette is cheaper than it is on their little Cobalts, and how it gets nearly 30 miles to the gallon.They just swear I'm lying... And I'm like "DUDE! I own the DAMN car!"

I drive a 2003 Celica GT-S, and yes, it DOES have the same motor that was worked over by Yamaha. The only difference between my car and the Elise is that Lotus put in their own ECU for a little more go-fast oomph. The last scene at the 6:50 mark where you punch it? My car sounds EXACTLY like that. It goes apeshit at 6000 RPM, and doesn't hit the limiter until 8200. That's the Yamaha "lift" feature. Keep it up guys! Great reviews! I certainly hope to drive an Elise someday.

My father was a mechanic for 50 years, he built and restored some of the most powerful muscle cars you've ever seen, he also had some clients with modern sports cars. I've ridden in everything from a 50's Bel Airs to Lamborghinis and THIS, a 2005 Elise, is THE greatest car I've ever been in. The steering is perfect the body work is beautiful and the engine sounds amazing. Even if I could afford a top of the line brand new lambo I would still buy a Lotus instead.

My godfather saved for years to get a S1 Lotus Elise, the one with the 1.8 Rover K series and a measly 120bhp. Never have 120bhp felt that fast. I was 8 when he first brought it to my parents home to take me for a drive. I'm now 23, we drove it around Europe and did tons of road trip with it. No highways, only B roads. Everytime I'm grateful to be able to drive that little ball of energy. Because of how it made me feel, my first car is an austin mini that I "restomodded" to around 90bhp. And I feel that same joy. No fat, nothing to look at except the road ahead of you. No power steering, no assisted brakes, no ABS, no ESP. Your hands feel like they are touching that small amount of asphalt under your front tires. And both cars can give you that. One will set you back under 10 grand once everything is in order ( shell restoration, camshafts, overboring, new pistons, head porting, new shock absorbers, metro vented disks ...) while the other will set you back around 25 000€ where I live. Both will turn head and make your life better. I swear.

Watching this again after watching ask Mr. Regular #5 and you guys talking about people asking for gas money. Besides that there used to be a Lotus dealership 1 town over from where I live and the "extended test drive loop" passed by my side road. Saw a ton of them when I was younger. Man I wish that place was still there, combination Lotus, Saab and Volvo dealer.

I owned a Lotus Europa back in the day. If any of you ever have the opportunity to drive anything made by Lotus. Do it. You will never look at driving a car the same again. It will teach you something. It's just that way. A car the responds like you are wearing it not driving it. And you'll remember what it was like, and fondly, until you are old, like me. Kinda like having the best sex ever 20 years ago . . . and you remember every second . . . still.
