@@Blazerghost Cost is detrimental to a fast car when the money is spent on things that don't make it faster. The Viper wasn't about being luxurious or high quality. It had a single-minded focus on performance. There were faster cars, but they were much more expensive.

It actually uses the same steering column as almost every gm, amc, and jeep vehicle did in the 80's. Found it odd that the when I was restoring my jeep that the only other vehicle that shared the same windshield wiper switch with it was the early vipers. Thought maybe it was just the switch, but now I see it straight up uses the whole Saginaw steering column.

Aside from the fact that it's a quote from the video, it's not at all far from true. You may have a newer car with 400 horse or more, but it's got traction control, ABS, all sorts of electronic nannies and actual safety equipment. The Viper is none of that. It will kill you in an instant if you don't respect it, and that's why it's absolutely amazing.

DeviouS yes there is nod difference but an engine that makes its peak power at a high rpm's will feel different than one that is set up to make peak power at lower rpm's. A carbureted engine with a large plenum single plane intake will not be as responsive on the bottom end but it will scream on the top end where a dual plane intake will be more torquey and responsive off the line

My older brother and I saw this when it was a concept car at the Detroit Auto Show. We were awestruck. A few years later, he received his Viper. People went nuts for this thing when we drove around, mainly guys like you said. One guy followed us for miles to a stop sign and begged my brother to give him a ride for $50.00....The dude was so excited, I agreed to get out and stand by the side of a country road for 20 minutes so this guy could fulfill his dream by riding in it. I loved that car, he let 13 year old me blast the "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" album on our Michigan summer rides, even at full volume you could barely hear the music over the engine haha. Just figured i'd share my story since this review brought back a lot of memories!

@@derekintrovert5619 Incorrect. The hubs and wheel bearings were from the Dakota. Brakes are bespoke Viper. The Gen 1 and 2 didn't have enough rear brake, likely because they didn't want folks locking a rear tire. But the brakes were fine, like the rest of the car, you just have to learn how to use them. Go look up 0-100-0 times for it.

I recently had a chance to drive a NASCAR stock car from 2005. The brakes arent any better there either. You have to press the pedal down to the point your leg is completely flexed, and even then, you only have brake engagement. To get the car to stop fast you have to slide up in the seat and slam your foot down on the brake pedal with no less than half your body weight and then you have to fight the wheel because your car will immediately jerk to whatever side the planet deems the car should go.

I can admit that an automatic option would've definitely helped this car sell more units, but at the same time you gotta admit Dodge's commitment to keeping it as raw of an experience as possible 'til its discontinuation was nothing short of admirable, and in turn made gave the Viper a legacy and uniquiness that next to no other car can boast "Yes, we could give it an automatic, sell more units , and make more money, but the Viper isn't about that, we have a vision, and we'll commit to that vision until the very end"

My money goes straight to the original model Viper, either RT/10 or GTS, thanks to Gran Turismo. But playing Need for Speed a decade and a half later, I look at the newer models and go "Where's the snake styling?" It looks nice on it's own, but the styling feels like it's trying to be something else. Like a Mercedes-Benz or an Aston Martin, but only halfway so. I'd risk being in a screaming deathtrap if it means having the authentic bodywork.

Yeah, I feel like it's the most exotic of the American sports cars. They're incredibly rare over here in the states because nearly all people just buy Corvettes because of all the common amenities they have. Some go for a Shelby GT500, but not many. THEN, you have the Viper. No one really buys them because they're the last breed of their kind-- a car without assists except for ABS, probably.

Even in the 90s it's pretty astonishing that the Viper made it to showrooms for people to buy. Volvo and Mercedes were very much touting their safety credentials at the time, the 80s cemented the seat belt's existence particularly with the channel drive auto-belts, and the Europeans were starting to spread the good word of the airbag. The only things that were perhaps similarly dangerous - only perhaps - would be a RWD 911 Turbo of the time, or something even more absurd like a Lambo, which were quite rough-hewn machines back then. But the Viper takes the cake. The first 2 gens of this car still look better than gens 3 and 4, though the original GTS coupe is the ultimate expression of Viper styling.

Your comments about the automatic transmission is spot on. I bought a new Mustang GT in 2015. Automatic because I just got tired of shifting. My Mustang is a great touring car and I drive it daily. I want to go to things like Cars and Coffee and share my passion with others, but it's such a negative experience when someone is appreciating my car then 180s because it's an automatic. Then it just becomes a case of me having to defend my preference for some reason. So I just stay away. It kind of sucks.

Hmm... when I was little I also preferred my Hot Wheels- Viper. Because it was REAL, and it was one of the SILLY POWER cars that you could actually buy. But... ...were I back in 1992 today with a midlife-crisis, I'd rather a Corvette ZR1. Slightly less horsepower and poorer acceleration, but a more stable and agile drive overall. Which says more about me than it does cars... at all.

Algernon Ilfracombe it definitely looks better after the fall of American cars looks until the Charger came back. It's a wonderful mix of edges and curves

I love them but I wouldn't say pretty. More like menacing. In a good way. :D

For some reason lately I've been replaying Max Payne 1 & 2 and this is really giving me some cool noir vibes with your interesting word choices & references to important Jungian archetypes that relate to why men love cars.

It had 90s problems but this thing was a legend and a big strive of bravery for the Chrysler company. A time when they made cars that did not compete with the rest of the world. I still like it and would be extremely happy to own one if given the opportunity.

This was a great R.C.R. episode. I feel the raw and blatant energy of the viper perfectly complimented the style of journalism showcased on R.C.R. Great video. I have watched for a few years, I subscribed today. Keep getting better. P.S. Buy a skateboard or rollerblades for a smoother "run along" shot. *edit spelling.
