Three years into my Stroke, I went from using a Platform Walker to A HEMI WALKER which I started in September 19, 2022. Now I can walk further distances each day, transfer to a toilet, and walk up and down therapy steps with help. (Started with Steps on Oct. 11, 2022), Thanks to your videos I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED A LOT since my Stroke of Dec. 2019. Thanks

One thing that is helping me transition off the cane is using a tall cane/staff/walking stick (handle is about chest high). It keeps you more upright, aligns your body to a more normal walking position so you can strengthen the muscles and get them to work together. It becomes a tool for small balance adjustments instead of relying on it as a 3rd leg.

Lov the vids and info. Tough demographic, stroke patients. I have MS, male 56, working to smooth my walk. Drop ft rt side, stiffness in rt arm and hand. Keep the vids coming. Damage is damage. Did some dry needling with some success. Thks for taking it to the basics. Ever hear of patterning. Basically crawling for adults. Helping the brain to relearn or remap the basic motion. We all crawled before we walked. David

Dear Dr Tara Tobias, Thank you so much for your videos and the time you take to give us a detailed explanation of why our body is behaving as it does when we try to do things. Your exercises are so helpful but your explanations are invaluable as they mean we can have an understanding of how to correct our posture as we go about our daily life. To be aware and overcome the compensatory movements that our body has already learnt because we have had to live life sometimes before we are physically ready. Thank you again.

Great observation, Denise. I'm quickly coming to realize the importance of the comments from other stroke survivors like yourself who post here. They are adding to my knowledge and confidence in these vocational training clusters. We can see them working for tens of thousands... and to know our efforts are not misdirected. It also helps when I see Tara performing the exercises. Her fluency with language in concert with her exquisitely timed gestures makes me want to get out more and spend some time learning how to be more expressive in public. It's one thing to write effectively, another to think and speak off the cuff when all you're thinking about is drawing as little attention to yourself as possible. This past weekend here in Maine I met a woman named Alison who lives in another state with my sister. The three of us went out to lunch together. Halfway through our lunch Alison shocked me when she revealed that she too was a stroke survivor, and after watching me struggle with a cane she wanted me to know she had lacked the confidence to navigate the 3 inch grade coming into the restaurant, and yet she had never hesitated one second to walk in unaided without cane or walker. I didn't have a clue she was handicapped. I admired her courage and told her so. She's partly why I'm here. I taught myself to walk with a cane and have not had any rehab beyond using a walker. My therapists and I developed our own version of the stride and gait taken directly out of the back of the 4,000 page Grey's Anatomy. True story. Mine are as rudimentary as it gets.

Hi there! First of all thank you for your videos and throughout explanations, the world needs more people and specialists like you! I would like to ask you a question. I've suffered a sever brain injury resulting in a lesion right in the centre of the motor cortex so my legs are the affected limbs, I have a little knee spasticity and foot drop/spasticity on my left leg. I can pretty much do all the movements you talked us through in your videos and I mostly walk wearing an afo brace on my affected ankle. I do find that my legs get really stiff when I sit down or don't move for a bit and don't feel completely safe walking down a hill for example, so sometimes I bring a cane along to support me in those situations. Would you have any suggestions for this?

Dear Tara, I' saw your videos, wich are really very good. I am a Hungarian physiotherapist, and I think about some exercises what you theaching before the independent walking it's too late. I' d teach same exercises to my patients, but than when they can standing before they will walk. In that moment need to teach the good balance, if they haven't a good balance I never will to teach the walk with cane or with something else. The balance is the most inportant thing. If they have a good balance, during the walking will not have a bad ankle positions, because I'd teach that during the step exercises. Soory about my english, I can understand evry thing, but I can not to write very well. I enyojd your videos, you are a very good teacher. I 'd a big practise with stroke patients, I like to work and to teach to my patients. Thank's evry thing.

I have Cerebral Palsy. Have had it since birth obviously, but I eventually learned to walk on my own when I was a child at some point. At the start of the pandemic, I completely lost the ability to walk without help. I walk every day and have been for a month, using a quad cane. I walked carrying the cane like 4 days ago, however, today I had to use the cane today during both walks after I took two days off to rest my muscles after not taking more than one break in a month due to sore muscles. I don't know how to fix this and become confident again. I also have an issue stepping up onto the main road that separates my road from the road I live on. I freeze and panic, sometimes I can do it without using the cane, but not very often. I'm frustrated.

Hi Michelle!! First, I get so excited when I hear people pushing beyond their comfort zone. I think this is a great goal. The progression would be 1. feet side by side (touching) 2. feet shoulder width apart with the uninvolved leg slightly forward 3. Uninvolved leg slightly forward with heal touching big toe 4. feet in tandem (one in front of the other). Wall on the involved side with feet about 6" away from the wall. Be able to hold the position for min 5 sec without falling into/away from the wall before moving on to the next foot position. Try that and let me know how it goes!!

This is very interesting. I had a bike accident the other week and landed hard on my hip. I can now walk unaided but with a limp. I believe I have psychosomatic as my brain is trying to protect my injured leg although it’s fine now. I need to put weight on it and trust it when walking. Will this video help?

I can walk short distances without my cane, it’s the longer distances I’m worried about or when I’m walking in a crowd, like the mall. I don’t want to bump into people

I do have one question if this makes sense. I am unsteady walking out in the open although I do it. i havent had a stroke or anything like that just sciatica and leg weakness. I am adhering to your vids but if I walk normally on flat ground im a little unsteady but if I walk quickly I'm more stable does that mean anything? BTW I am working on your stairs videos, thank you

Thanks for the comment! as much as possible. Remember, your brain and body are in "learning" mode. Think about how much time you spent learning as a child (hrs a day). It requires a very similar strategy after a stroke :)
