Interesting, yes, impressive, in a way, yes. It's always fun and fascinating to see what other artists come up with in terms of ideas, I love how Adam puts a lot of thoughts into the music, beyond just the harmony (for example, the key relative to the present instruments is one I don't think about often enough). And impressive in terms of quality, energy, putting everything together + making the video is a lot of work, and even if I don't agree with every choice he made, I still find the overall result very neat and I'm sure, to him, satisfying. :)
@mikeshaver-miller745
@mikeshaver-miller745 4 жыл бұрын
Well, I’m of the mind that when you are dealing with leaving an impression, if it doesn’t fit with your preferences then it’s not going to be as impressive. In my opinion, there were portions of this arrangement I would omit to help bring the piece together. The original composition was very bland, in that it only had a certain amount of tones and chords it was offering. Just like making a meal though, if you don’t provide the right mix of variety between your “musical flavours” and simplicity to help keep everything coherent, you’re going to have people who plainly don’t enjoy it. Looking at it from another perspective, a huge part about what makes music enjoyable is anticipation, and using that anticipation to satisfy the audience or continue to raise their interest. If someone is listening to a chord progression, for example, and you subvert their expectations, it can be immensely satisfying. If all you are doing is subverting those expectations, then the audience can sort of burn out and lose interest.

I usually don't comment at all on KZfaq, but here it goes. I am a musician as well, not a pro, but I've been doing this for quite some time now. This video seriously gave me the chills. First for the fantastic rendition of a great song. Second for the realization that I can either make peace with the fact that I will never do anything as good as this OR that I can take this as a sign of how much more we can do with music, if we are willing to go farther and explore beyond the common places. Thank you, Adam.

This is one of my favorite videos you've ever made! I learned so much both visually and through what you say. This is one of the best examples of the roots of reharmonization and the stories one attempts to tell; that's the reason some one would reharm, to enhance the story or tell the story from a different perspective, or even tell a totally different story. Grand Slam! (I used a baseball term and I don't like baseball that's how good this video is)

You send a letter to, and then pay royalties to composition artist, and you're good to go. There's no negotiation, and no consent required as long as your rendition is true to the original (ie, not something completely different, or sampling, or remixes, vel cetera). Amazing how the new harmony have intensified the “regret” feeling of the song. On the original track I always felt the “regret” aspect but at the end of the song I usually feel “embraced”, probably because the “resolution” the pop intervals give us. For the next Q&A... What are your emotional responses on listening to the same song in different harmonies? Congrats, Adam.

I've always heard that progression as vi IV I V. Originally I analyzed it in minor, but thought it didn't make sense. Once I realized the first chord didn't have to be a I chord, major made so much more sense. 'Oh, that's why the bIII sounds so stable; it's the I!'
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the song in question. For example "Still Loving You" by The Scorpions uses that progression in the chorus, but the rest of the song is so clearly in minor that I don't think it sounds like relative major in that song. But in some other songs, it does sound more like vi IV I V than i (b)VI (b)III (b)VII. In this particular song, I think it sounds more minor than major. The progression lacks strong resolutions which is why it sounds a bit ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways (and depending on context may sound different).
