You understand the current state of AI a lot better than you think. But what is true for music is also true of images, text, video, etc.

If AI music needs a body, why does AI art or conversation not? Humans already create completely digital music so that argument is pretty flat.

5:47 I don't agree with this take. It seems to not include solo musicians as musicians. Humans can make music in isolation without working with anyone. Seems you're saying only a "musical directive test" counts as opposed to the "musical output test". I agree that the former is closer to the setup of the Turing test for a musician, but what about the audience? For the audience, the output test seems most relevant here.

16:08 Also disagree with this. What about musicians working in purely programmatic forms, that never pick up an actual instrument? This again claims that only the directive tests are valid Turing tests.

Man, this comment section is filled with elitists who thing that the only good Music is something innovative and noone before has ever thought off. The truth is that a simpler pop or jingle Music has its place in the world, not just 7/8 or 15/16 jazz excercises

It didn't become music until you engaged with it. I guess, like my linguistics professor said about language, music is something that happens in the human mind, not something that's carried on soundwaves or inscribed in stone. Even as you seemed to admit defeat, you demonstrated what the machines are missing.

Great video. Linking music to a physical activity, and not just a mental one, is profound… and the first time I’ve heard someone say that. Although it seems so obvious now… It makes me think about how little we still understand about the links between the physical and mental worlds. Mind and matter… we can’t measure mental phenomena (yet) with any objectivity so wtf even is it? We’ve no idea!

I can grant that the current generative AI models will struggle to jam, but Im unconvinced future AI breakthroughs won't be able to pass it... this feels like just another "AI won't ever beat this test" only for it to be broken 20-40 years later ^.^

I'm afraid this video will age badly, history has told us that not only do we have a cognitive bias against things that threatens to replace us it always eventually surpasses our expectations. I think the music industry will go through what the food industry went through in the last 100 or so years. A Homemade cake will usually be preferable but that doesn't mean a factory produced Twinky won't ever be enjoyable or have its place.

I think it’s easy for musicking or art the verb to come across as some self indulgent arrogant idea propagated by the artists or art museums trying to validate some weird contemporary style. But musicking the verb equally applies to very simple unsophisticated things that don’t even involve the artist. Musicking is listening to Eminem to prepare for a competition. Getting angry while on hold with customer service but then kinda vibing with the looped music. Doing a power hour Fighting over the aux Watching the podium ceremony at the Olympics. Trying to sleep while the apartment next door throws a party.

AI won’t pass music Turing test, but will be hugely influential - I think largely in positive ways. A couple I can think of: (Disclaimer not an idiot or expert on ai or music) 1) will streamline performance / production. - making decent quality much cheaper / more accessible. E.g Automated mastering, adjustments or recs for balance / texture, better auto background parts, ease of sampling / applying effects 2) more broadly will make music production much and performance simpler. This is a double edged sword. Will allow artists to produce with with fewer resources and be more independent from record labels (e.g. publish near pro quality on their own and grow fan base more before then negotiating from a position of greater power). But as we’ve already seen through more basic tech / internet reach, this will flood the scene and make it challenging to differentiate. 3) music search - this will help counteract point 2. For both consumers and record labels, will help search through the overwhelming pile of content

well honestly, a lot of human musicians would not know the difference between Jazzy Blues or Chicago, not even speaking about the ability of adapting to it on the fly - I assume, you haven't been to a 'real' jam session in a while, where non professionals create more often then not mediocre or even shit music... point being: obviously comparing current AI to professional, seasoned musicians is really not fair and also not what a turing test is supposed to do. you really gotta ask the question: can you differentiate KI creations, from - lets say - a typical 17 year old, just starting out... because this is basically where we are.

I don't think you even need to invent new technology to meet all those metrics that you require for it to pass the "Musical Turing Test"-and therefore its the opposite of "doomed". People just haven't felt assed enough to put together our different technologies to make it happen.

Will musicians ever prefer to play with AI? Some will, especially the less talented ones. But will two AIs jamming together eventually produce a session people will prefer to humans? I think its inevitable. Because they arent reacting to humas nature. They're solving for it.

Yet another overly elaborate rephrasing of what's essentially "AI can't currently do this so it won't ever be able to do it". Unless you think there's something supernatural about the human brain, or you think a meteor is going to crash into Earth and kill us all in the next 5 years, there's precisely ZERO reason to believe AI won't be able to match then surpass us at "jamming" as well. First, it will generate a convincing audio and video imitation of a jam session, then we'll see robots jam in real time, then we'll see perfectly photorealistic human-looking robots doing them. Look I get it. I wanted to be a musician when I was younger. I've written tons of music and performed live myself. I understand exactly the worry AI brings about our future. But it does no good to live in denial about it. This is coming. To stop it would require stopping ALL technological advancement since all such advancement is tied directly to IT advancement which improves exponentially which exponentially uplifts all other sectors. You'd need a totalitarian world government and ubiquitous surveillance. It's not remotely practical and definitely not desirable. It's far better to focus on how we can use AI to improve the world for EVERYONE, not just the billionaires looking to stick us on UBI while they hoover up the rest of the wealth. If we can pull that off, you will have far better tools to produce your own music than you can even imagine today, and you'll be able to do it without having to monetise it to justify your existence and passion to the rest of society so you can continue to live. You'll actually be able to do it entirely for the love of it. Tell me with a straight face how that's not better?

Unfortunately, scientifically and objectively speaking, its simply not possible to declare that AI will "never" do any given thing that humans do is to believe that human consciousness involves some supernatural element that simply isn't physically present in the brain. If, like me, you believe only in the natural sciences, and believe that the human brain and its complexity entirely accounts for the complexity of human behavior, then you must accept that it can (and will) be duplicated with non-biological machinery (ie, computers). This is more or less proven mathematically: any physical symbol system is capable of being reproduced in a different but equivalent physical system. Either physical interactions among parts accounts for the "output" of our brains, or there must be some non-physical (and therefore supernatural) element involved. There are no other options, here. And if physical interactions entirely account for it, then it can be reproduced. AI is deficient in certain areas like emotion and human sensory equivalents, but that's just a matter of continued research. Again, either human cognition involves a supernatural, even "magical" element that cannot be duplicated with a physical system, or AI will eventually equal (and maybe exceed) humans at literally every thing.

even if music is only made by machines in the future, it will still be guided by humans, it will continue to evolve with human taste. if you send back in time to yr 1500 a generative music machine, theyll probably be generating barroque like music for 100 years and slowly start to get bored and ask for different music until finally someones luckily generates clair d lune or gangnam style. music is for us, emotional resonators. the artist is the first to defend what created because it feels it. machines cant feel. mind and body are the same! what machines have is an abstraction of the mind
