I met with the surgeon today. What is difficult is that I have many options and the choice is up to me. #microdiscectomy #L5S1 #reherniation #spinesurgery

I would an artificial disc replacement. Those do not reherniate.

How are you doing today? I have two bulging discs from a back injury 14 months ago- ive tried pt twice once for 4 weeks, another for 10 weeks along with epidural steroid injections. I use to have terrible back spasms and sciatica and couldn't drive, walk or bend over. I have returned to work but less laborious job (nurse) but still can't return to running like I use to (half marathons). I am 24 and still have left leg weakness, tightness and fatigue with neural tension as this leg has nerve impingement at l5 and s1. Still deciding if I want to pursue the surgical route or wait it out. It isn't as bad but Im not able to go back to what I was before and the constant tightness and weakness is very uncomfortable.

Hey I want to let you know that I rejected surgery and injection then got off pain medications after 8 months. 2 years later got another mri my herniated disc went down from 10mm to 3mm. Not saying this will happen to everyone but proof that disc herniation can reduced in size. Rehabilitation(pt yogo pilates sport medicine), diet and healthy lifestyle got me doing better than before but no doubt the struggle is real. One thing I noticed on your mri is that you might have a flat back. Look up flat back syndrome not saying you have this but it's better to know if you do.

Opie W it seems that in your case your body did resorb the herniated matter! That’s kind of where I’m at, but I’m pushing it today at work just to test waters and my nerve pain is coming in stronger. I absolutely have some alignment issues that will need to be addressed one way or another no matter what course I choose. I will say I’ve been doing yoga for years and years...(prior to my injury 18 months ago) But I cant do it without aggravating the nerve at this point. It probably is because if my poor skeletal alignment among other things. I don’t think there is only one route to take I think it’s going to be a combination of treatment options. I just need to figure out what puzzle pieces go together.

I have l4-l5 hernited disc I undergone block injection, epidural but no effect its only waste of money. My doctor injected me the new injection called hernicore its been lately approved by Japan last sept. 2019 Jan 22 2020 I underwent hernicore injection it was painful and got rest in hospital for 1 day. 1 week later i fell improvement the shooting pain in both legs gone i only fell the toes numbness but i was able to resume to daily work. But 2 weeks later i feel pain in the lumbar area and i could not stand straight. It could because i over stress and dont use lumbar support after the injection but a week after the was able to resume again and always use lumbar support. The hernicore is a bacteria injected in the center of the disc so they will ate it and the disc pressure outside lessen it takes 3 months for it to work.

Hi Megan, How are you doing now with your lifestyle and pain ? I am likely heading for the microdisecactomy having endured radiating pain in my left leg since last 5 yrs. Which has gotten worse in last 6 months and atm i cant stand or walk more than 3-4 minutes , can't bend , can't put my shoes on without a lot of pain . Hoping that this shall help me, have tried physio, accupunture and medications aleady.

I am 2.5 years post op and doing great! Yoga, bikes, hiking, snowboarding and everything in between. I will say I still have bad days with lumbar pain and stiffness, and a pinky toe that’s numb in certain positions, but I’ll take that over any of what I went through prior to surgery. I crawled into surgery and walked out! I opted NOT to get a second surgery for my Reherniation and instead focus on an at-home PT & alignment program called MoveU and I still work on the movement for 20 minutes each morning. If I could go back in time, I would t have delayed the surgery at all knowing what I know now. Best of luck and happy healing! ✨

Pain sucks..im 11 weeks and fear that I reherniated...meet with surgeon in two days...they said sciatica could last many months after surgery because of inflammation...how did you know you reherniated? Taking anything for the pain? I live on aleve and tylenol...hope all went well for you...wondering where you were 3months post surgery...

Brian Lombardo hello this was about 2 years ago so I’m a little rusty on the details. We knew I reherniated because my nerve pain came back and was constant and persistent. Very unlike the random “zingers” I would get during recovery. I am now over 2 years post op and my nerve pain has gone away for the most part. I still have bad days, but if I stretch every morning and maintain good posture I do just fine! Good luck!

@@megant3530 thanks for getting back to me..my MRI is Tuesday .I never really stopped having pain..but not as bad as before surgery..MRI is just to rule anything out..definitely don't want another surgery..hoping my nerve calms down...surgeon said it could take up to 9 months..or it could be permanent nerve damage because of how long i had the issue before surgery and it was calcified...glad you are doing better...
@megant3530

Brian Lombardo yes, sorry I don’t check this very often anymore. Don’t let the term “permanent nerve damage” scare you too much. For example: I have permanent nerve damage. I can’t feel my pinky toe on the left 90% of the time. But in retrospect, I’d take that minor inconvenience over the pain and suffering I was in prior. It’s still slowly getting better each day too. There are days where I can feel it in certain positions! Take the terminology with a grain of salt, and focus on getting back to moving your body. The more you move the better it will get. I highly recommend the online program called MoveU. They have a KZfaq, Instagram, and website. I’m in the program and have learned how to isolate muscle groups, realign my body position to protect against future injury, and have begun strengthening. Good luck!

Mike I never had injection or surgery. I am doing pretty well. Snowboarding again, it’s really just minor tingles and occasionally some dull lvl 4 pain. I just started a new online PT program that is really helping me improve my alignment and I can’t wait to start getting stronger! Good luck!

@@megant3530 Megan do you know if once a disc herniation like a dying disc? And PT just for relief but disc dying not healing ? I hear some guys say it'll heal reabsorb and some others say it's lie disc is dying and is getting worse and worse eventually needing surgery will never heal what is true? I have 3 2.5 mm herniated discs and two facet diseases im so scared to die young I don't have money for surgery and heard surgery is bad choice can leave you worse

@@johnnyrodriguez276 my dad has what is called “degenerative disc disease” where the discs just wear down over time and the body isn’t regenerating. I’m not sure if that is the same thing you are referring to or not. I’ve never heard of it described the way you mentioned, but there are many things that can happen.
