Would you use the internal sleeve compartment for a hydration bladder or a laptop?

I guess a bladder since you pointed out the issue with a laptop going there?

Depends on the trip. I haven't used it YET but I have a date with the Camino late spring next year. I will be journaling but I am under the impression that aqua is freely available pretty much along the journey so I'm not really concerned about lugging much water.

Neither! I bought this pack and returned it because of both the back compartment and the hip belt issue that you called out. Was a great carry and carried a ton but those two things killed me from keeping this - especially in more urban environments or business trips. You also don't have anywhere to store the hydration port when it's not in use so that didn't work either (though I tried!).

I probably wouldn't use a bladder while travelling (unless I was specifically for the outdoors) but I'm wary of putting my laptop in places that aren't specifically designed for it. It seems like a good place to put documents that you wouldn't use as often (spare ID, extra copies of itinerary etc.)

I would not use it for a laptop or bladder because I normally do not travel with these things. So is is perfect for me like it is.

I've just bought a new version of ruck pack 40 recently. Actually I did know that updated version has been released ....and still no one seems to have compared or reviewed yet. Here are some changes I noticed. • 2 loops on the straps are not stretchable • Slight change on back panel • The handle on the top is thick as the one on sides • Side pockets for bottle are not compressible. No straps • No zip compartment on the bottom • No hidden straps 7:52 on the top • Slight change on the top pocket •The direction of the zippers on the side pockets has been changed from the outside to the back • Right side pocket has one organization, erastic band for pens and hidden pocket • Left side zipper can go down to the bottom. No devider so you can fully access to the main compartment. • Side compression straps don't go over the side pocket zipper. Sorry for my bad English. I hope this helps someone.

I’ve traveled over 250,000 miles this year alone with this pack as my one-bag travel companion. One of the best luggage investments I’ve ever made, and the quality is still holding up after 10 months of continuous travel. I’ve checked it in, it’s been tossed around, the straps are fraying, but I love this pack. I’ve even used it for a 4 night backpacking trip! Not optimal, but it worked out great and was comfortable while trekking through New Zealand! The hidden daisy chains are my favorite feature

Two items, side “pull tabs” are there to lock the side zippers to. Second, the “small annoyance “ of unclipping the compression straps to open it all the way is really helpful so you can use the bag as a top access. I have carried this bag for two expenses over seas travel. First carrying it to Everest Base Camp (80 miles 12 days) and Tour Du Mont Blanc (110 miles 11days). Both trips included court travel before and after. I would highly recommend this pack. I have a 2nd generation Patagonia MLC carryon and this bag is much better.

Hello, great review. I just found one at a thrift store for 7$. I believe the side zipper pull tabs also function as additional security. By putting the zipper pull through them, it would be harder for a pickpocket to unzip the side pocket.

Great detailed review as always, and awesome, no frills shots of the actual bag. The overall shape and opening reminds me a lot of the Arcteryx Khard / Vanquest IBEX, and the side pockets of the Camelbak Trizip (this is a good thing IMO). Also, thank you for including the women's version, and women reviewers across all your reviews! From a short girl with excessive bag/gear acquisition syndrom, it is much appreciated!

Another great review, Tom! I like that you guys have been adding bloopers to the end of each review, nobody is perfect and that adds a little something funny to each review. I like most of the features of this bag. The pockets, all of the little hook places on the outside, rain cover, and compression straps. However, the hip belt is a deal breaker for me personally. I believe that should be a hide-able/removable feature.

@@PackHacker I own this pack and i'm about to take a 1-2month trip with it. I saw in another video that they just folded-in the hip belts and then folded the strap cover inward+tuck to semi hide it. then the hip belt sort of becomes a lumbar support. (seemed like a decent work-around)

I used the similar REI Trail 40 for the El Camino de Santiago in Oct. 2017. It was perfect for that application, very comfortable and survived the trip with minimal wear. It worked carry-on even though it was slightly over the TSA limit of 9x14x22. Hiking poles are not carry-on compatible so I checked them in a cardboard tube which was a major pain in the butt in Barcelona when they put them on a special carousel that was hard to find. I tried out the Ruckpack 40 at my local REI loaded with 20 lbs of sandbags which was slightly more than my El Camino load. The Ruckpack 40 was not quite as comfortable as the Trail 40, but it was close.The waist and shoulder belts were both hide-able under a zippered flap on the Ruckpack 40 I tested so I was surprised when you said the waist belt wasn't hide-able, although granted the waist belt is hard to get under the flap.

About to take this pack to Europe for 2 weeks. So far, it works super well! Also, in regards to the laptop pocket; there is actually padded foam at the bottom of it. That along with the back mesh on the exterior and clothes on the interior, I haven't needed to worry about using a padded computer sleeve. In the end though it all depends on your preference.

This is a good review. I may have missed it, but you don’t make mention of the lack of a top carry/hold handle though. Considering he likes to wear those puffy jackets (like the nano puff from patagonia), I am surprised his only mention of the exposed zipper was on the aesthetics side. Jackets like that always get the brick shaped thread caught on things like zippers, I would hate it if my pack took a thread out of my jacket.

The side system looks great, but I don’t understand why it the zip faces outwards, that just makes it less secure if you want to put phone/keys/wallet. The zip should face the wearers back.

Hey, thanks for sharing this review. Awesome video production. Could I get your advice on this? I'm contemplating a purchase between this pack, Farpoint 40 and REI trail 40. Main use case is to bring it on long term travel but it needs to work as a backpacking pack as well. While I'm not very particular about the urban look, I need the strap to be sturdy enough to support a hike of 4 days to 2 weeks in the Himalayas. I'm a lady so I appreciate the details about the thickness of strap but still can't quite make out the quality from the video. Also I live outside of the US so can't test them out myself. Which of the pack would you recommend?
@PackHacker
@PackHacker 5 жыл бұрын
Hi consumativ-great question! I really like the straps of the REI Ruckpack 40, they are curved and padded enough for comfort. If I was in your shoes, I believe I would choose the Ruckpack 40 (women's version) simply because of it's comfortable carry and ease to use. If you are still considering the Farpoint 40 (which is another great option)-I urge you to take a look at the Fairview 40 instead, as this is designed specifically with women in mind. Here's a link to our full review: packhacker.com/travel-gear/osprey/fairview-40/ Hope this helps! Happy to answer any other questions you may have. -Hannah

I torn between thoses 2 and the setout but I can't tell if the higher capacity has a big impact on the overall experience. @PackHacker
@PackHacker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joaquin, the women-focused option is designed for a smaller frame. It has slightly thicker straps, while the men’s are more narrow, plus they are shaped slightly differently, too. The women’s harness is anchored a bit lower than the men’s version, which is done to optimize the pack for smaller torsos-and because it’s anchored lower, it also sits a bit higher on your back. We haven't tested the men's focused harness system on a smaller frame, so we cannot verify the fit 100%, but both packs do have adjustable straps on the shoulder straps and on the load lifters. Just as a note, the sternum strap and shoulder straps don’t offer anything in terms of strap management, which means you’re going to have some dangling straps on various parts of this bag especially if you need the straps shorter. Hope this helps! We also recommend checking out the full written review here: packhacker.com/travel-gear/rei/ruckpack-40/ - Rebecca

For reference, here you can find Tom & I's torso length: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNRdjLJ72ZOXd4E.html Hope this helps! -Hannah

I like that they have a men's and women's version. I don't like that they assume all women are short. Which probably means that for me the hip straps are way too high. I also noticed (really good!) that the chest strap is much lower! I cannot really use most chest straps because, boobs....

@@PackHacker Thank you, I have only just started looking for new luggage. I have been traveling with a big roller suitcase (and so fed up with it), and my old backpack is a big top loader for trekking, totally adjustable so torso length isn't an issue.. My stuff is old and falling apart so a good time to rethink travelling. The Tortuga Setout divide is top of my list right now.

@@AafkeArt I understand! The Tortuga Setout Divide is a great option. You could also check out their Setout Laptop Backpack, it's very similar but a bit cheaper! Link: www.tortugabackpacks.com/products/setout-laptop-backpack -Hannah

If you pack it full it won’t, but because it’s somewhat of a soft shell you could squeeze it in but you’ll most likely lose the top quick access pocket.
