I just looked at both of these during the REI sale. Today, REI fully opens and the panel to cover the straps is super easy to close, now. The handles are also better. I chose the REI, because I don’t need a laptop sleeve, and the Osprey sleeve took up too much space and couldn’t be removed.

REI is a better EDC or hiking pack and good for travel if you like the packing style but sometimes can be too tall depending on the airline.

The best review out there on these two backpacks. The Rei is just better looking (but not so much) and its qualities end here. It's bigger, no inside straps, cheap fabric. The Farpoint is a best seller and is great at almost everything. Even its style has improved in the last series.

This is a really good review. I tried both packs, and chose the REI Ruckpack 40. While more difficult to access, the computer in the hydration sleeve worked better for me. Putting the laptop on the outermost section of the Osprey pack really messed up the balance of the load for me. I also liked the feeling of security with the main zippers because they weren't externally facing. I also felt the load was balanced better, because the Ruckpack is longer and slimmer along the back. Very comfortable to carry on the back. Worked great for two weeks of work and play in Switzerland. I love Osprey (have the Aura pack for backpacking), but the Ruckpack was right for me for travel.

The REI isn't for sale in my country but I bought the Farpoint 40 a year or two ago and love it. It's a great review but I think I should mention that the compression straps obscuring the zips is a design choice. It's made that way as a security feature to prevent someone opening the zip without you knowing.

Thanks for a thorough comparison. I have used both, and both do a great job: comfortable to carry when fully packed, hip-belts that transfer much of the weight from the shoulders [IF your torso is within the sweet spot of the sizing - this is key!], spacious and open main compartment, decent side/water/small stuff pockets, and (in latest version) a thicker and therefore more comfortable top strap holder for the Ruckpack; the handle/straps of the Farpoint is still superior and great. The Ruckpack - especially when on sale at REI - is MUCH cheaper (today it is $85, compared to Farpoint 40's standard $185 - maybe there will be future sales at similar discounts if you missed the sale ending tonight). BUT there is a big downside using the Ruckpack for air travel - at 25-inch height, it is well in excess of typical 22-inch or so carry-on height (and also the relatively standard combined 45-inch maximum for height + width + depth). So Farpoint 40 for air and international travel, and Ruckpack for domestic travel by non-air mode (train, bus, etc.). I also use the Ruckpack regularly for urban EDC when I have a lot to carry above the beyond the usual 20-25-30 liter capacity of my usual EDC backpacks. Ruckpack is 25%/10 ounces or so lighter (only 45.5 ounces compared to Farpoint's 56 ounces): enough to feel it.

They're actually both pretty comfortable. They both have decent shoulder straps, a sternum strap, and a hip belt. They also both have multiple sizing options, which is why a lot of people like these bags and have a hard time deciding between them. The Ruckpack fits slightly better on me, but that's not going to be the same for everyone. I think the most important thing is how it fits on you, the best way to know is to just try them on if you have a store available. REI in the US usually has them both, or you could just order them, try them on, and return the one you don't like. =)

I’m looking into getting the Osprey Farpoint 40. I heard if those are trying decide between the two Osprey has a lifetime warranty of all their packs. So you accidentally break the bag or rip a hole they will either fix it or send you a new one. That’s my determining factor I like knowing if something happens it’s got its forever warranty.
@OneBagTravels

Its not lifetime as in as long as you live. They estimate a packs lifetime and thats in singular years. Normal wear and tear isn't covered either. If you tear/ rip/ get a hole thats considered wear and tear. If the seam comes apart within 2 years- then thats a manufacturing defect. You pay to send the pack in, they determine if its covered.

Just buy the Decathlon FORCLAZ TRAVEL 100 40L. Cheaper and has most/all of the functions as those bags mentioned in video. And the Decathlon one fits as carry-on baggage, or fits under the airplane seat. Ideal for a light travel for a week. I use it for my tourist travels around the cities in Europe. I can ack inside all I need for a week, leave the bag in hotel and for the day I use smaller foldable backpack or gymsack. :)

The way you packed the Osprey is not the best for weight distribution. You would have a easier carry if the heavier items are center along the spine
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Good point, packing heavier items along the back is better for weight distribution. My packing style varies depending on the use, backpacking vs travel, or how long I will be carrying the pack. I don't tend to carry packs this big around all day when I'm traveling, but you're right, you would definitely want to pack it different if you were going to. The Ruckpack also has kind of an awkward packing style, it opens from the top like a backpacking backpack, but also from the front like a travel pack. For travel sometimes it makes more sense to pack the bag for easier access to your gear.
@custiskids
@custiskids 5 жыл бұрын
Is that the woman’s sized Ruckpack? And does the Osprey come with a similar option? And how do these two compare in the ability to stand up on a flat base? That may be the greatest distinction between them. I have the Ruckpack and just returned from Jordan with the wife, four five days. The lack of a flat bottom was the most noticeable design wrinkle.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Both of them are the men's size. The Osprey bag has a female version, but it's called the Fairview, same bag but with slightly different colors and sizing. Neither of these bags stands up flat on the bottom side. Both bags actually have a rigid back frame, which keeps the back stiff, but doesn't let it stand up well. The Ruckpack is much worse for standing up than the Farpoint, especially on smooth surfaces like tiled hotel floors or airports.

Yeah thanks but how about carrying comfort? All that is useful but if the bag is painful on you back after 2hrs, that's a no deal.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 жыл бұрын
Very true jgsk. These two bags are both moderately comfortable to carry, both have decent padding, load lifters, stern strap, and adjustable hip belt. The Ruckpack has a taller frame, so it's better for folks with larger torso lengths. I've carried both these packs while traveling, and haven't had any problems with comfort, although if you had them packed full, or with a lot of weight (laptop, camera etc.) They would both start to hurt your shoulders eventually.
@lisab898
@lisab898 4 жыл бұрын
As a tall female with the same size torso, I would like to have seen how that Osprey pack fitted you because I have the same bag and there is no way it fits my torso length. The hip straps become more like waist straps. Also, when will Osprey stop making packs with the laptop on the front. So bad for weight distribution. I am sticking with my Sojourn 60 for now.

The REI pack is obviously over the carry on size limit considering that the Osprey is designed to be the maximum allowed size. Most airlines don't fuss over it, but the ones that do will cost you 20-40$ as a lovely surprise right before your flight.

You're correct, the listed size (24"x13"x10") is over the carry on size limit for many airlines. However, the bag is soft sided, so it can fit into smaller spaces than this. @Sara Scalia Yeah you're right, the listed capacity isn't usually accurate. The REI bag looks like it can hold more, it doesn't have as much padding as the Osprey, and the main compartment looks bigger. I'm heading to Paris tomorrow, but when I get back I can do a quick comparison with a pile of clothes if you're interested. I have a love-hate relationship with the Osprey. I like it more than the REI Ruckpack, but it's not my favorite travel backpack because of those design flaws you mentioned. The water bottle pockets are unusable, the laptop pocket is in a weird location and puts pressure on the laptop when the bag is full. And the exterior pocket doesn't have good internal organization, it's just a big pocket. But as many design flaws as the Osprey has, it's actually still a decent bag. It holds a lot of gear, is well made, has a great warranty, is comfortable to carry, and comes in men'and female versions. It might not be perfect, but it's a good option for a lot of people.

Even though both are "40L", does one of them hold more?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Not really. I packed them with the same gear and they were both pretty much full with little room to spare. Here are two side-by-side photos of the bags, packed with the exact same stuff: Ruckpack - imgur.com/ywVYaCK Farpoint - imgur.com/bevtwJf The complete packing list of what is in both bags is posted on my blog: onebagtravels.com/rei-ruckpack-40-vs-osprey-farpoint-40/ They pack a little differently however. The Ruckpack is taller and skinnier, while the Farpoint is shorter, and wider. Cheers,

Nice review. I think the most notable omission is the height of the two backpacks. While the Farpoint 40 fits in most budget airlines carry-on size limits, the Ruckpack 40 looks clearly too tall. But your video was very helpful. Thank you. What are the dimensions of each of your 2 larger packing cubes?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You're right, I didn't include the dimensions and height of the Ruckpack! I have a separate video review on just the Ruckpack, where I talk about the height being too tall. Guess I forgot to mention it in the comparison =) On a side note, I recently took the Ruckpack 40 to Puerto Rico on Spirit airlines. Their max dimension for height is 22", while the Ruckpack is 24" tall. I was nervous it wouldn't fit because Spirit charges you a lot if you have to check the bag. But it fit in the metal size thing just fine, and I was able to take it on the plane. It's soft sided, so as long as you don't overpack it, you can squish it down enough to fit. The two packing cubes I use are both from Eagle Creek. The larger red one is their medium sized compression cube. It measures 14”x 10” x 4” ( 36 x 25.4 x 10 cm). It has an expandable zipper to compress your clothes after you pack them. The other black one is also an Eagle Creek medium cube. It has the same width and length dimensions, but isn't a compression cube. 14” x 10” x 3” (36 x 25.5 x 8 cm)

@@OneBagTravels The REI Ruckpack won't be allowed as carry-on? I had already been looking at these two bags specifically because they were large enough to live out of, and allowed as carry-on with the airliners? Even the REI website claims the 40 is carry-on.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
The REI Ruckpack is 24" tall, which is technically too tall for the example I gave of flying Spirit airlines. BUT, the bag is soft, and you can squish it down. So as long as you don't overpack it, you should be fine.

Yes I was wondering the same. One of the biggest plus points of the Farpoint 40 is that it is carry-on compliant. is the REI too?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
@@tnetroP Good question. The dimensions are listed as 24"x13"x10" (61x33x25 cm). So technically it is too tall for many airlines. However I recently took it on a Spirit flight with a 22"x14"x9" restriction without a problem. The bag is soft sided, so you can squish it down if not overpacked.

I Lost a bottel around 20euros or more.. with the Osprey 40... because i thohgt that puch was for the the bottle! I lose my firt day of travel hehehe!! so I'm looking for better expericence for my water bottle... any ideas? I did pack too much that bottle could not stay in place? or it is not well designed for a bottle of water?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
I think that pouch is supposed to be for the water bottle! I'm not surprised it fell out, it's way too small and not designed well. Try using a collapsible water bottle from a company like Vapur. You will have to store it in the bag when full, but it will take up way less room when empty.

I would pick the REI, but the lack of security is a no no. Why bother having a locking zipper on the main bag and having two side openings that are not lockable. that defeats the purpose of a lockable zipper. The idea is to deter thieves and pick pockets.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
That's one thing I don't understand about the Ruckpack design. Especially since you can access the entire inside of the bag from one of the side pockets!
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
@mong0push Good question, there is a way! There is a small fabric loop near the top of the zipper, you can use a small carabiner or luggage lock to attach the pocket's zipper pull to the fabric loop. It's not the best security system, but it will prevent easy access into the main pocket.

REI Ruckpack 40 carry on ?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Technically the listed dimensions is slightly too large, but the Ruckpack is soft-sided so it can fit into the standard 22"x14"x9" container if you don't overpack it. The listed size of the Ruckpack is 24"x13"x10", but I've taken it on flights with smaller restrictions. Here are some images of the bag in a small (22"x14"x9") Spirit Airlines container, and the bag fitting easily in the overhead: imgur.com/J9DMtBM imgur.com/IihZnbe
