"It's crazy to me that we have all of this beauty and nature around us, and some people don't even see it. For me, I get to appreciate it sober. Something I didn't think was possible. I didn't think happiness was possible." - Sarah
Going from rock bottom to the mountaintop, one woman’s journey
from the streets to the top of one of the most challenging mountains to climb in the lower 48.

The Colorado trail saved my life. I came to Colorado last year to fish and camp and discovered the trail and made up my mind I was going to Durango if it killed me. Never backpacked a day in my life. I loved it so much I hiked it again this year! I'm actually sitting in a yurt as I type this . Keep hiking people !!

Thank you REI and Sarah for the amazing story, I am in the process of recovery right now from an alcohol addiction and have this exact same goal to climb Rainer this upcoming 2019 season to prove to myself I can beat this addiction and follow my passion for the mountains. This video hit straight to the heart and I loved every second of it! Wow, what an accomplishment, so happy for you all!

I need to do something like this soon, I struggle with alcohol addiction as well... few years ago I successfully hiked the JMT; afterwards I fell back into the same habits w/ alcohol. I could type out a whole essay, but i'll wrap this up.... I find it hard for me to fall asleep without drinking while living in my apt (living by myself), however, when I am on the trail and camping I feel absolutely no need for alcohol. Mt. Rainier is intimidating though, while I hiked up Mt. Whitney on the JMT (higher than Rainier) was no problem, but I have no mountaineering experience that Rainier requires.

This is a beautiful example of the power of the climb. When you look at the mountain and say "I'm going up there" and you do it. All of the suffering and the pain juxtaposed against the sheer beauty and our strength and perseverance. I never feel more alive that moment when I'm almost at the top. If you can do this, you can do anything.

As an addict 8 years into recovery who sees the importance of pushing oneself in all aspects of life to move forward I feel what you are doing. For me it's the rivers and the lakes, the sunsets and the rocks. Keep fighting. And climbing.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this! I have a film about climbing the Grand Teton during cancer treatments titled "Mountain In The Hallway" and can relate to so much of the same feelings of hopelessness and depression. Being outdoors is the best remedy by far!

At 13:42 there’s a list of the songs played. I liked that one at 5:19 too! I think it’s “Making a Move” by Lady Bri. They play it again during the closing credits, great song! 😁

So now you're going to be addicted to climbing. According to Gaston Rebuffat, the Peutery Ridge is the most beautiful route on Mt Blanc; go for it.

Amy law .. we hire our own independent guides :) have you climbed the DC Route on Mt. Rainier? Give it run!
@b_ork_9744
@b_ork_9744 5 жыл бұрын
I saw a couple of RMI stickers during the briefing. There are three companies that run regular trips up Rainier, RMI IMG and Alpine Ascents. The DC route is very popular and is maintained in cooperation by guides from the companies and the Park's climbing rangers. It's still a long, burly route for many new mountaineers! There are numerous other routes up Rainier; while some may be well trod by the end of the season, on most you will find yourself making your own way.

Let’s be honest. The standard routes on rainer are mild snow hikes.
