Funny, I too am brought to tears each time I hear this beautiful discussion. As a former high school physics teacher, I used to play this at the year to my classes. Most sat through politely but probably didn’t take much in. But I’m sure every now and then a student would get a little of that “Feynman Inspiration.” Luckily, I usually would play this with the lights dimmed after perhaps showing another video clip…so I could hide my tears. ☺️

2:57 "I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing, I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don't know anything about. But I don't have to know an answer, I don't have- I don't feel frightened by not knowing things. By being lost in the mysterious universe without having any purpose - which is the way it really is as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn't frighten me." This quote is amazing, I feel it so deeply, I understand and completely share his views. Amazing video, amazing talk.

We are indeed out here. Also keep in mind that the ignorant tend to have the loudest, most prolific mouths. The wiser individuals among us by contrast, I have found, tend to be more thoughtful and taciturn. We may be entering a period of history where that pattern must change to avert catastrophe, though. It may be well past time to become louder and braver.

That which turns out to be "fittest" to survive, may likely not be what would have been "best" for humanity or the universe. Those who leave room for error and doubt are surely the more worthy of trust, but those with a deluded self confidence can imbue their nihilist conduct with powerful "certainty."

What a beautiful video, it's a shame it had to end. And it's a bigger shame when our beautiful home is getting destroyed and people choose not to believe it. Dr.Feynman, I never had you as a teacher, but I can say with certainty, you have opened my eyes and brought joy to me. With all that is going on in the world today, we need to take action, and it's not gonna be with just one person. We need to come together not as nations but as one nation, and it's not gonna be easy, what we have done to our earth will take time to fix.

I have probably watched this video more times than I can count. Yet, every time, it was as if I've never seen it. Feynman has a mind unlike any other and it's beautiful. If people as a whole took the time to put their preconceived notions about life and beliefs on hold and attempted more of an open-minded approach we would be in a much better place. Cheers Feynman, truly one of a kind.

But then he'll say, "I, as an artist, can see how beautiful a flower is. But you, as a scientist, take it all apart and it becomes dull." I think he's kind of nutty. [...] There are all kinds of interesting questions that come from a knowledge of science, which only adds to the excitement and mystery and awe of a flower. It only adds. I don't understand how it subtracts." Richard Feynman, 1988, "What Do You Care What Other People Think?"

"The scientist has a lot of experience with ignorance and doubt and uncertainty, and this experience is of very great importance, I think. When a scientist doesn’t know the answer to a problem, he is ignorant. When he has a hunch as to what the result is, he is uncertain. And when he is pretty darn sure of what the result is going to be, he is still in some doubt. We have found it of paramount importance that in order to progress we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt. Scientific knowledge is a body of statements of varying degrees of certainty - some most unsure, some nearly sure, but none absolutely certain. ~ Now, we scientists are used to this, and we take it for granted that it is perfectly consistent to be unsure, that it is possible to live and not know. But I don’t know whether everyone realizes this is true. Our freedom to doubt was born out of a struggle against authority in the early days of science. It was a very deep and strong struggle: permit us to question - to doubt - to not be sure. I think that it is important that we do not forget this struggle and thus perhaps lose what we have gained." -Richard Feynman, The Value of Science

It's almost like the images, his voice, the words spoken, and the music exist solely to be played together in unison. Amazing.

I've watched this time and time again, I can now remember every word in the video. And yet, I still listen amazed, trying to figure out how one man can string so many words together and mean so much. Of course, if he was alive and I told him he'd ask me how do I know it means so much. I think I could listen for eternity and still be amazed with this man. He's outstanding.

Thank you for putting beautiful imagery to these beautiful words. Feynman and Sagan had a way with words to describe science and philosophy in ways that only truly passionate men of science and understanding could bring to light. Their understanding and ability to simplify and explain the world and science is a true credit to their names and memories. The world is a better place for these men. May they not be the last true poets of science and understanding.
