The ignorant will always outnumber the intellectuals, the important thing is to raise the base level of both. If the ignorant of the future are as intelligent as the intellectuals of the present, we're doing something right.

This channel is making me such a sap. I find myself crying tears of joy and sadness at mankind's successes and follies, I find myself feeling despair for our past and hope for our future, but most of all, I find myself smiling with wonder and amazement at the enlightening knowledge of extraordinary people like Feynman and Sagan.

The sentiments Sagan expresses here have more resonance now, given the UN's recent dire predictions. "Decades, or even years", indeed.

By acting your self. If you are intelligent and educated then you have a far greater ability to affect positive change than an ignorant individual. A single great person, like Sagan, can educate and move many. The trend throughout history has been an ever increasing in education, this is the answer.

No, I'm guessing what he means by "we sense a stirring of a breeze" is that it is only the beginning, and if we take the chance, we can breeze and turn it into a guiding wind (ie. actually make change).

Reminds me of when James May, from Top Gear, got to visit the edge of the atmosphere in a high-altitude U- Spy plane. He could see the curvature of the Earth. When he landed, he stepped out of the jet and said: "If everybody could do that once, it would completely change the face of global politics, religion, education; everything."

It is absolutely brilliant that humankind's collected wisdom is all on youtube. No more excuses for not learning stuff, as the best and brightest of our spiritual teachers, scientists, astronomers, intellectuals, and thinkers are posting all their present and past talks on youtube. One can fasttrack a university education by spending time with the greatest thinkers and artists of our time on youtube. It's amazing. I'd recommend Tedtalks/Lord Martin Rees: Is this the Final Century?

@Thornleyfan4ever I'm 14 as well, and I've got to say, this has completely changed not only my perspective on my life, but my perspective on our species as a whole. I hope that everyone will embrace the opportunity to do what you would want to do. I only hope that everyone realizes what could be out there, and how petty many conflicts are sweeping the world. If our species could unite, imagine the possibilities.

Thinking is an act - all that we see around us in this modern world is unfolded from human thought, the human psyche, in it's various branches and insular forms. Society is a movement, an expression of a collective psyche. We define it, and it defines us. How we act is how we think. The two are not separate or isolated.

What Carl Sagan states about the human species becoming a danger to itself is also stated within 'Deep Truth', which I feel is a profound and inspiring book. In layman's terms, Braden speaks of how the tools of transformation are ultimately in our hands and that working as a community will be the method of restoring ourselves and everything we hold dear.

Like in Star Trek. What was the reason for the countries of Earth progress and unite under one banner, finally TRULY cooperating as United Earth (and later the Federation)? It was World War III, a conflict that killed roughly 600 million people. Horrifying, but the result? Humanity worked together and reached for the stars, not in the name of profit, but in the name of progress and discovery. I'm with you on that one, even though I don't want to be.

I would like to state now that as a 17 year old; I understand the problems facing this world. I firmly believe that ignorance is the worlds greatest threat. I believe I must defend my generation. We do not all run around chanting Biebers name and succumbing to corporate rule. I am not some hippie politics graduate either, I am a normal kid. We are not all ignorant. A lot of us care for more than booze and women.

Your future is part of the general future of the human race and vice versa. If your future is bright that doesn't mean that of the human race is, but if the future of the human race is bright, yours is too. Basically, helping humanity on the grand scale will, in the long run, help you more than just looking out for yourself.
