That's what they said about Borodin's string quartet too. Nothing in music can really be compared in my opinion. Making a top 100 is a very human construct of the brain. The truth is that all these pieces are different colors that have to be seen in their own context. But I very much agree that the Berceuse is among my personal favourites here too.

I can't express how happy this posting makes me feel. I totally love Gliere, his Träumereien is my favorite piece ever. Russian music teachers love to use his pieces for training, though I find he's not that widely known outside of the post-Soviet region. All the more joy to find him here!

interesting how Gavotte is written with the barline in middle of the sounding 4/4 measure

Gavottes have half-4/4-bar pickups; it’s what defines the whole genre

@@mylesjordan9970 in that case this isn't a gavotte, it clearly starts on beat 1

@@guidemeChrist if the listener doesn’t know the position of the barline, then their experience is that of a gavotte. I would argue that the music is more important than its graphic approximation. Brahms, for example, often reprises the same materials in different positions relative to the barline within the same movement. (One example is the C Minor string quartet’s second movement.)

If I were performing it I would probably alter the order of some of the pieces, and not necessarily play all of them. Wonder how the "Etude" might sound if it were played as single, rather than doubled notes? Less frantic, in any case.
