I'm always amazed at how placid your quail are!! We've had quail for around 5 years and they've always (aside from one male once) been super flighty!!

Nice quail 👍🏻 mine would have flown straight out of that bucket and been gone! 😁 I also do a full clean out and rearrange before reintroductions or combining flocks. I also spray all mine lightly with a very weak apple cider vinegar solution before introducing any. Don’t know if the smell means they don’t recognise each other or just the shock of it haha. Then lots of food and treats and mostly it goes smoothly 😁

The spray of apple cider vinegar is a very good idea! I'll pinch that. 🤣

My quail are vicious savages! The scalp each other and i have a couple that have there throats pecked to the point the look Slit ...so i bought a huge rabbit hutch that has 2 floors so they have room to get away from each other.

@@BrimwoodFarm & Tamara, I had no idea!!! I'm hoping to raise quail when we "retire" soon, so I'm glad to know to be aware. What is the "quail math" for space? I'm assuming that's the fix?
@tamaracross9
@tamaracross9 3 жыл бұрын
@@gothic_oma i dont know the math per square foot but the ratio of males to females needs to be like 1 male to every 4-5 females ...the males fight each other and the females get tired of those guys jumping on their backs and they will attack the males if there is no rest time between breedings. I got a 5 foot long hutch that has a second floor and im going to house 60 quail - 75 quail . the top level is closed in and im putting several hay boxes /nesting boxes in where they can hide and get away from a bully...the ladies get along really well.

Hi Geoff. Do you know who did the beating up and why? Was is just 'one of those things' that probably won't happen again? I have a boy and 4 girls that - touch wood - seem to be living in harmony.

Think it's just one of those things. They sometimes decide they don't like someone and start picking on them.

I had a couple boys in together too and they are little devil's! There was a hole pecked in the top of my boys head. He's fine now but yeah it looked really bad. Did you say coturnix? My coturnix are all brown, are these like a different crossbreed? They are very pretty. I was thinking of getting Bob Whites they are pretty too. Nice video.
@scottlepak7068
@scottlepak7068 3 жыл бұрын
Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) are the Coturnix species that has been domesticated and is commonly kept. There aren't really distinct "breeds" of Japanese quail per say, like you see in many other domestic species, but like other domestic animals, they can come in a range of different colors and patterns. Some strains may also differ a bit in size (like "Jumbo" quail), or lay different color eggs ("Celadon" quail lay blue eggs), but they are all the same species. I assume that yours are most likely the original "wild-type" coloration. The birds in the video are simply a different color variety. They are still the same species, not a different species or a "crossbreed." The only real difference between them and your birds is their color. If you wanted to add some more color to your own quail flock, it would probably be pretty easy to find some different color varieties of Japanese Coturnix quail to add to your existing flock. It would certainly make hatching a lot of fun, seeing what different colors you get. :)

Yes, these are Texas A&M - a coturnix and British white Cross. When I breed them they normally return to their natural colouring.
