you can achieve a similar (if slightly more cumbersome) effect with playing cards and plastic card sleeves you can find in your local game store. put a card in the sleeve, then slide a piece of paper in front of the card! this has the advantage of letting you print your card designs too rather than have to draw them by hand

OMG! This explains why when I was a kid, we had A LOT of decks of Nintendo playing cards (not blank). I didn't believe they were really from Nintendo, I thought the maker just sort of printed a random known brand. I didn't care, they were the best playing cards I've ever tried! They shuffled extremely well, they bend nicely, they slide on surfaces nicely, and you could spill liquid on them and they'd still be great! They were thinner than regular cards, so it's easier to handle them, too. Such well-made cards. I miss them!

Would be fun to come up with duel card game where players can draw their own cards during play, allowing for cards that fit the situation and/or are extremely over-powered. The catch is that used and discarded cards will become available for other players eventually. So if you make a card too powerful to defeat another player's card, chances are you'll have to face that card yourself sooner or later.
