What a good teacher you are! I've enjoyed watching several of your videos and hearing the tips you share along with the instruction, which moves along quickly. I learn dances of many nations from the Internet, then teach them from time to time in libraries and school (as a volunteer) here in GA. A wonderful way to have fun and exercise while learning about other cultures! Thanks for your part!

Thank you for this solo and group demonstration! I showed my 3rd grade musical theatre class this video, as we are doing the Hora in our song 'Hanukkah O Hanukkah' for our Holiday Showcase! My kiddos were having a hard time getting how the circle moves and I said, "do you want to see the video?" 😅👍 then we tried the circle and understood and nail it! 👏👏👏👏 thank you again!

I just chose the dance class in school, because the teacher promised good marks for any boy just for being in this class. Now we got the tast we haveto find "traditional" dances and present them. I literally can't dance at all and I have no understanding for music or dance at all. THIS VIDEO saved my life! Toda raba (Thank your very much in Hebrew) xD

For those who have commented about different versions of this dance...Yes, there are quite a number of different versions of the "Hora", which simply means "circle dance". It probably originated in Greece long ago but has been adopted by many Middle Eastern and European countries, all adding their own "flavor" to fit their culture. I chose to post this one because it can be used with virtually any song, both 3/4 and 4/4 beats. You can do it clockwise or counterclockwise. In the group that I dance with, we love to have 2 dance circles, one inside of the other, going in opposite directions. ENJOY!

Nikos Metallinos, ‎Carolyn P. Schumacker: "A handbook of Greek folk dancing" Utah, University of Utah-Department of Physical Education, 1972-75, p. 270 Greece: Description of the "Hasaposervikos" (*) steps, danced counterclockwise (CCW) at a 7/8 (Balkan "odd time" signature) rhythm with hands on the shoulders. Also known as "Zervos Hasapikos" (Butcher's Opposite/CCW). Variations of this dance are the following: Arab Dabke, Armenian (Shuffle) Shourch Bar (Cross Bar), Ukrainian Arkan, Romanian Hora, Bulgarian Kasapsko Khoro and Kasapsko Kolo (Butcher's Round Dance of Yugoslavia). (*) lit. means "a butcher's Serbian way of dancing", though - they say - it is an ancient dance mimicking soldiers fighting with swords (which symbolized the campaign of Alexander the Great against Darius). The swords were replaced by the butchers' knives in the Byzantine times and the present day (part of the said) dance-name in the Balkans comes from the Turkish word kasap, meaning butcher. www.humankinetics.com/excerpts/excerpts/ancient-greece

Very good instructions! This is the version I learned too. In Israel, they have other versions I’m not familiar with. The funny thing is that many don’t know there’s an actual step in the hora. As I say, “You just have 100 Jews in a circle, jumping and kicking with no apparent reason!”

I remember, (going back over half a century 😀), the circle would rush in lifting the arms when we got the center, and then move back out, the whole time holding hands. I think we also would break somewhere in the circle and then snake the line through another part of the circle. not sure.

I teach Religion in a Catholic school. I teach about the Old Testament which is the same as the Jewish Torah and we spend a lot of time talking about our connection to Judaism and our Jewish neighbors. One thing I want to do is teach them an appreciation for Jewish culture and I thought the Hora might be one way to do that. I am planning on showing them this video and another one about the Hora as well. I am wondering, though, if you think it might be okay to let my students try the dance for themselves. I would never want to appropriate Jewish culture so I thought I would ask in the comments of this video if that would be seen as disrespectful for Catholic children to try this dance. Should we just watch the dance and appreciate it that way or do you think it would be okay for us to try it? Thank you so much!
@rejoiceindancing
@rejoiceindancing 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful question and for viewing my videos! I do not think it would be disrespectful at all for your students to try this dance. Indeed, one of the best ways to appreciate the aspects of another culture is to EXPERIENCE the differences. That way our lives become fuller and richer. I believe that your students will have a much greater appreciation for the the Jewish culture in general and for these dances specifically when they experience the JOY and UNITY that these dances bring. Blessings to you as you REJOICE IN DANCE!

Is it common practice to use the Hora steps to the song 'Kol Ha'olam Kula', even though there are six beats to the song's four? I'm looking for dance steps to that song. Thanks for the video.
@mrcrabmoney
@mrcrabmoney 4 жыл бұрын
As a choreographer and musician, not versed in traditional Hora dancing, BUT I would add 2 extra steps like a grapevine and the hop kicks. It should fit in 6 beats. Step R back L step R front L hop R kick L hop L kick R.
@teresacook8498
@teresacook8498 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my video! I'm sorry for the late reply, but I just saw your question. Please see the excellent suggestion from Nicole Knox below. This dance should work fine with your song since there are 6 steps in the basic dance sequence, which is repeated over and over. You simply have one step per beat.

I don't know why she calls it Jewish let alone Israeli - the hora is an East European/Balkan folk dance and was appropriated by the Jews who lived there.

The Jewish circle dance is actually called a Freylikh, which means joyous. A hora is more similar to a waltz in tempo. She knows nothing about either Jewish music or Eastern European culture at all.

Liliya Kavas You sound like the Arabs who flip out when anyone calls hummus Israeli food. Lots of products/dances/traditions have roots in other cultures, but blossom somewhere else, in this case Israel. Get over yourself.
