Residents in southern China found themselves grappling with extreme dampness when relative humidity climbed to 100% on Wednesday, according to the Guangdong Meteorological Bureau. The moisture has swept through cities in the country’s south, causing water droplets to accumulate on ceilings.

We have that much humidity in the south every summer, but it doesn’t collect inside the house. So interesting how different buildings are designed to stand up to specific conditions.
@fingernecklace4817
@fingernecklace4817 3 ай бұрын
That simply isn't true. It's bizarre that you've decided this is just an architectural phenomenon, I mean you saw the incredibly dense, wet fog covering the entire city in that video, right? You claim that happens "in the south every summer"? The southern states have the *lowest* average, annual relative humidity, it's most humid in the northwest. But even the most humid areas in the US average around 80%... 100% relative humidity would be dramatically wet *anywhere*. You should look into how humidity works, how water vapor diffused in the air behaves. It's worth understanding that sort of thing.
@mamasantore

@@fingernecklace4817 Unless you live where I live, how do you understand what I’m saying?? I’m not talking about the “average” humidity. We have periods, even if it’s just for a few days at a time, where we have 100% humidity. It’s bizarre that you claim to understand what I’m talking about when it’s completely clear that you have no idea. You should maybe spend some time living in this area. Just this morning, we have “incredibly wet, dense fog”. I can’t see more that a few feet in front of me. It’s nearly 80 degrees at 8am and the outside is dripping wet. But it’s dry as a bone inside unless I open the windows. Please don’t try to “educate” me on something you have no idea about.

The atmosphere right there is reaching 100% humidity, and a slight decrease in temperature would cause condensation. That said, it’s going to form water droplets regardless of having fresh air or closing the windows. With buildings having the freshest air possible, it’s going to get more humid. The solution is to not open the windows and balcony doors and use dehumidifier.

@@f.d.75I don't live in a super high humidity part of the world. We're around 70%-80% average, sometimes getting up to high 90s. Because it's not super common to get very high humidity were one of the few homes to have a dehumidifier running 24/7 in the spring/summer. During those seasons the AC can be on the same temperature but when the dehumidifier is on it feels cooler, and better. I got our dehumidifier out yesterday, last night was the first night since spring rains started I haven't had my feet outside of my blanket at night because it feels too warm. Same temperature, just lowering the humidity made it better. It makes such a big difference, spending the night at a hotel, someone else's house, or going on vacation I'll sleep worse. Only option to humidity at 100% is an AC especially if you have children and elderly. Mould and poor air quality can be deadly. It cost more dealing with the medical bills due to sickness caused from humidity than to pay a bit extra for electricity running an AC

Relative humidity is a measure of how much humidity is in the air as a percentage of how much could be in the air. It is significantly affected by temperature, because colder air can carry less moisture. Relative humidity will represent the same amount of humidity grossly differently depending on the temperature.

This is one of the reasons that A/C is such a nice technology. The cold coils pull moisture out of the air, so it doesn't condense on the inside of the structure. This is also why when you run your car's defogger, the A/C is activated. The air going through gets the moisture pulled off, before going through the heater core to warm back up before being blown across the windows. This is also useful for helping your body cool off, since your sweat can evaporate more easily.

Last time I went to Hong Kong it was over 98% humidity on a daily basis. I remember hanging up my jeans after washing them and they took well over a week to dry and only because of the sun and wind helped. Also getting into bed at night, the bedding always felt damp and gross despite leaving the AC on. Our furniture needed replacing frequently due to mould and decay, like PU seating would literally flake off on your skin when you sat on it! I recall my aunty returned to a bedroom wardrobe full of mould and it wiped out all her clothes. She’d only been gone a few months! Oh and it was exhausting just doing simple things! The air would feel thick and viscous, really strange. On the positive side, my dry skin was epically moist and I could easily skip moisturiser without risking the scaly snakeskin look I usually get in the UK.
