Where it gets cool is when the air is absolutely saturated (that is, _at_ 100% humidity), and then the temperature _drops._ All the excess moisture becomes visible in a phenomenon we know as "fog."

As a Floridian, I knew most of this stuff since I was young & watching the local weather, however this was a great way to describe everything. Great informative video.

This explains why we in Arizona are quick to say it's "A dry heat" Because yes it's 112 outside but the dew point is like 20 so your sweat evaporates instantly, making you feel cooler than it actually is. The sweat is actually doing it's job and why evaporative coolers work so well in the dry times. Where it really sucks is when it's 103 and the dew point is 85. You feel like your breathing in soup while covered in a slick layer of sweat and just beads up and drips off you rather than evaporating. thankfully that only happens during the monsoon. and it's been 20 years since Arizona had a "real" monsoon.

Another overlooked factor is the relatively consistent variable winds you get in those areas. It being hot and humid is already one thing, but throw in ZERO WIND and it feels all the more miserable. Those of us in the Southeast (Florida excluded) are quite familiar. Lol. Florida is it's own continent in some regards. Lol.

Great explanation of a topic most people are uninformed about. Do weather stations still use Dry Bulb / Wet Bulb thermometers to read the dew point?

I always enjoy your videos! Could you do one about what happens, chemically, to foods when they get freezer burned, and why it makes them taste bad? :)
@ashknoecklein
@ashknoecklein 5 жыл бұрын
The short answer is that the food has been exposed to air inside the freezer, and this causes the food to oxidize. The oxidation is what makes it taste gross.

take frequent showers (2x times a day) that should make your skin dry so you are more prepare to humidity (your body probably would even appreciate humidity since your skin is dry after shower). This should also help you become more productive.

1:50 how sweat and humidity relate, water molecules absorb heat off skin and evaporate into the air, but can't if air is fully saturated so it stays stuck on you. 3:05 'how it feels' is subjective, but dewpoint is objective, it's the temp the air must cool to to reach 100% saturation.

THANK YOU! I had this doubt for so many years, I thought it would never be cleared up. See, my hometown is muggy and hot for most of the year. Summers are hell, like stepping into a sauna, I sweat profusely all day and night if I'm not in an air conditioned room. It's almost sea level but right in the middle of the continent, so no sea breeze... little to no wind, which make things worse. It's one of those situations where your skin sticks to the sheets making a mess and you can't have a comfortable night of sleep during summer... unless, like I said, you have AC. 5 years ago I moved to a city in the same state, but on the opposite side, that is almost 2km above sea level, it's way colder all year round, and there's only like a week at most where it gets really hot, and I could sweat during the day... most nights gets colder, so I got rid of the dictatorship of the air conditioner altogether. xD It is a freedom I didn't experience during summers outside vacation trips and whatnot. Not having to be stuck inside a room with AC when I didn't want to sweat profusely and get all smelly. :P But even so, it is known through weather and statistics that my current city is supposedly far more humid. Yet, this never connected for me. How can it be? My experience is almost the opposite. I was always sweatting buckets in my hometown while here I almost never break a sweat, despite that humidity percentage being higher on average here. So this video makes perfect sense... it's overall relatively more humid, but not actually in a proportional sense. I could never find a proper answer for this. You guys finally finally solved it. Now perhaps I'll also find my answer of a city in Japan that has a weather similar to where I currently live... another lifelong question I still didn't get an answer to. Dreams of moving there on day, kinda hard to happen, but you know.

@Larry Jones I'm afraid the frame of reference won't be useful there... I live in Brazil. xD South, to be more precise... my hometown is Foz do Iguacu, sea level and famous for it's falls, west end of the state, moved to the capital of the state in the east, Curitiba, 1km up the mountain. xD

100% humidity with a low temp usually means rain. 100% humidity with a low dew point means fog if the temp reaches the dew point.
@larryjones9773

Humidity is the water vapor content of air. It's a gas, not a liquid. We can only drown in a liquid.

Daniel Foland 😡 How condescending can someone be? Or how ignorant? I was dealing with a significant issue in science and mathematics, yet you can only make puerile remarks. Presumably you would prefer confusion and muddle over clarity and simplicity? Such arrogance from one so lacking in understanding is all too common, unfortunately!

Great complaint! Because there are not more meaningful things in life too worry about. You can expect smart Ass responses, considering using °F has absolutely nothing what so ever to do with people being lazy or uneducated. You sound like a prick while making those remarks. And if you're SOO educated and NOT LAZY, maybe you could just learn the difference between the two. Never thought of it that way, I suppose!
