Tchaikovsky is reported to have said, "I consider the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom one of the greatest productions of art. If we follow the service very carefully, and enter into the meaning of every ceremony, it is impossible not to be profoundly moved by the liturgy of our own Orthodox Church… to be startled from one’s trance by a burst from the choir; to be carried away by the poetry of this music; to be thrilled when… the words ring out, ‘Praise the name of the Lord!’ - all this is infinitely precious to me! One of my deepest joys!"

Listening to this with headphones becomes a place where the craziness of our world in 2023 fades away and reminds me there are good people doing good things all around the world, even if I don't see it happening and I can cling onto the belief that there are still more good people than bad :)

The harmonies reflect the Russian Orthodox choral singing and its complex harmonies, extended notes maintained through circular breathing and the crescendo and diminuendo tides of vocal dynamics that sweep on away. The balance of male and female voices must be just so, or it could go horribly awry. This piece poses an incredible challenge not only for the choir, but also for the conductor. And this lot have pulled it off beautifully.

Yes, A&M! I was thinking of the the rich, deeper tones that come from Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine etc and as you move more west and north the tones get gradually higher and lighter. Truly, God created choirs of Angels in Heaven and choirs of Mankind on earth to make a beautiful "audible aroma" that lifts upward to give Glory to God and comfort to us, with the inspiration of the composers.

Why should ANYbody be upset that they cried, especially for happiness?? Do you not know that tears send floods of endorphins to your brain?? They’re the biologically attuned happiness chemical we all receive as a huge gift from God or whomever your spiritually attuned to. I’m so proud that both of my adult sons allow themselves to be moved to tears when they’re happy or sad….of course, their dad showed them how it’s done, and he’s a big strapping 6’3” guy who is a sports fanatic, but also loves the music of Bach and Marc-Antoine Charpentier! Because we are made in the image of God, and contain the spark of life that connects us to God, who is the source of life. Look at recent videos documenting the very instant of conception, and there is a brilliant flash of light when egg and sperm unite. Gospel of John, Chapter 1, verses 1-5, 9-10. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.” “That was the true Light {Jesus Christ}, that lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.”

I immediately think of my father as this is what I would listen to him play. He was a musician since 7 playing piano and organ. He was the organist, choir director and music teacher at our parish for over 47 years. Dad played theater pipe organ locally. There was a pipe organ that he and church members built in the choir loft. I sit here feeling like I am listening to him. I miss him so much. With this being Easter weekend there was always beautiful music, memorable pieces. I feel as if this is God’s choir of angels.

I completely understand. I realize those you have lost and have passed on are really still with you, but it’s not the same. I am probably weird to some in that I believe you get “messages” to reassure you, calm you and give you piece. I was going through pockets of his suit costs before donating them and in one found a program from a “variety” type show with some people in our parish. I knew it was after mom passed as she was not in the cast. It was kind of like a double blink to be sure of what you were seeing. It was if he was telling me that he was with me. Like I said some think I am wired about such beliefs, but that‘s okay. Easy to say, hard to do, keep lots of memories around you if that helps gives you comfort.

The Hymn of Cherubim by Tchaikowski is part of his Liturgy of Saint John Chrisostomus. If these were the only work written by Piotr Ilich, it would be enough for positioning him among the inmortal composers of all times; but, as we know, he wrote more inmortal works, trascendents some of them, as his sixtht simphony, amused others as the character dances of "Cascanueces", passioneted as his violon concerto, master pieces as his first piano concerto, etc, etc. The marvellous world of music would be less marvellous without Tchaikowski and his unhappy life, the source of the nude and brilliant star of his music.

At the farmers market where I sell my produce, people often ask me why I have such a joyful spirit. I tell them that I’m pretty much always happy. Happy because I thank God for everything with which He’s blessed my life. Thanksgiving is the secret of perpetual happiness. The Orthodox music tradition is not only the epitome of thanksgiving and praise but worship as well. This work is the proof.

@@maryhaskett6778 Just as important, God needs to know you. I talk to God about everything and make sure my creator knows how huge a part of my life and existence He is.
