Hi everyone, here are the fly control measures I intend on experimenting with this spring: -fly glue boards (as seen in the video) -jar fly traps (coming next) -Redmond garlic salt IF you raise cattle and have another "non chemical pesticide" solution that has worked for YOU, I would love to hear it.

Hey Pete; I just wanted to give you a big “thanks “ for covering not only all the farm movements and processes like Salatin and Rhoades do- but also fence and equipment maintenance AND the accounting and sales. I don’t think there’s another channel that does all that- not to mention, your wife , kids and dad seem really great. I also think that your video editing and dad jokes and metric conversions are top notch

When he says things like "they went to freezer camp" (about the pigs) it's pretty damn macabre when you really think about it... I love this guy's jokes 😆

Speaking from some experience since I was the one who usually had to bait/empty them one of the best fly traps I have ever seen was made from mason jars and funnels, no chemicals. Back then my grandfather raised pretty much the same things you do but also goats. I now use 2 liter bottles and the square type orange juice containers,not mason jars,I usually put two around my home, my grand father had them everywhere. Cut the top of the container leaving about 3-4 inches on it,fit it upside down so the "funnel" part faces the bottom of the bottle, push it down till bottle halves are flush,put a few inches of water in the bottle and add a few drops of dish detergent (coats their wings so they can't fly), for bait we use to use "putrid" chicken guts and honey, did some quick searching before commenting and some say rotten shrimp works wonders, just add some honey or sugar to sweeten the stew. I do remember they got so full in a weeks time you had no choice but to empty them and re-bait (mason jars, plastic bottles will last much longer), again, no chemicals and you are recycling plastic containers instead of tossing them in the garbage,the more containers you have the more you can make at no cost since what you need is already at hand.

I mowed the grass here yesterday for the first time this season. been so wet and cold running late this season. so like you got lots to do. get the Adirondack furniture out of the shed. tighten up some joints on them, touch up some paint. put on some Poly, replace a few slats. we all have our "Maintenance chores to do. so lets all have "fun" together" Thanks for sharing yours and we'll look forward to the next offering. Patty does tell you when she's happy. I think that whenever she is quiet and not complaining, you can assume that all is well and that she is happy. Or at least grumpily content.

The apple tree reminds me of my parents house. They had a pecan tree in their back yard for about 15 years. I don't think they ever got a single pecan from it because the squirrels would eat every single nut off of the tree before they were ready. My dad planted plum trees last year thinking he is going to have a bunch of plums. I don't think he remembers what happened to the pecans.

Hey Pete, I am not sure what this says, but I was thinking about you when I was out and about today looking at the countryside here in Wisconsin for my 9:00 to 5:00. I think one of the reasons you have grown as you have is a lot of people starting off find your videos pretty informative on a multitude of farming topics and you come off as the "wise old sage". (I can say that as we are the same age...) For example, we recently added turkeys into the mix and that lead me back to your poult started tips for a refresher as we got things set up for that after learning ideally, they should not share a coop with the chickens. Video idea for you - a video about general infrastructure. Now you have covered a lot, but I do not recall a conversation about how the lay of the land, prevailing winds, etc., impact how things are ideally placed for optimal operation throughout all four seasons. Now, I get that you have had to live with some of the things as they were, but you see so many people that essentially start from scratch (as we did with all of the old buildings long gone) and thinking through things like how the wind and drifting snow impacts taking care of animals. Where and how you store hay and how that impacts chores during rougher weather. All of those things that make caring for animals a little more of a pain (literally) as you age you can prepare for and avoid now. Just a thought. Have a good one!

How wonderful it was to see Peanut cut loose with the cattle! Oh how happy she became as she realized she was free. :) There is nothing I love to see more on a farm than to see happy cows, pigs and chickens. :)) It's one of the main reasons I watch your video's because you take such good care of them. It would have been such a delight to have seen more of how the cattle behaved toward her and seeing more of their excitement reuniting. :) They really are such interesting critters. Thank you for sharing that with us and I'm enjoying watching all of your busy tasks.

Suggestions: Put a horizontal piece on top of the fly traps to stop the traps from having things washed off, and place a fly trap on the sunny side, flies probably like the heat.

You need to try the big stinko. It's a 2 gallon glass jar Deluxe the flies in through the top. Fill it halfway with water and soap and put a piece of bacon or meat or chicken hanging in the water. I've used it and filled it to the top with flies five times within 2 weeks. Barry the Flies Underground. We used it up in the mountains also at a girls camp and it would clear the whole area of flies around the zip slide. Amazing. And yes it does stink so keep it away from the house. Good luck. Cows wasted no time at all getting at the grass! That must feel so satisfying watching them have it the first moment of the first day eating fresh grass. Yum!

Yup ! I have the same model backhoe you have, just a earlier edition. I appreciate your attempt to control flies. 40 plus years ago we sprayed something on the cows backs in the dairy barn. I was always suspicious, but seemed to have stayed healthy despite of it. Thanks Pete.

Thank you Pete for another wonderful video. I am so glad I stumbled across your videos about a year ago. You make me feel at home. I miss the family home and the farming. I just bought 3 acres two years ago. I already raised and butchered 25 meat chickens and am raising 15 layers. Also put in a big garden. Going to be bigger this year because of the cost of groceries going up.

A lot of Newtonian Physics go into fence building and maintenance. Mass, stress, friction, compression, tension which the cows understand very well and of course the jolt. Spring is in the air and the fences are fully charged and everything is in order.
