I always enjoy your videos. I've been keeping/breeding Gouldians in my outdoor aviary (with indoor section kept at 10 degrees) for 5 years now (also located in the Netherlands). Like you I allow them to pair freely in a colony setting. To decrease the chance of inbreeding I make sure to always sell off one half of the young (i.e. all daughters from one pair), to fully prevent inbreeding you should also sell the mother in that scenario. If you do spot siblings (or other closely related finches) pairing up, separate them and provide them with new partners. So far all my Gouldians breed with their partners from previous years. (I do not separate them in the off-season). In general I tend to keep more males than females for multiple reasons. - This keeps my aviary more populated year round (I don't want to overcrowd the aviary with juveniles and I don't want a near empty aviary). - For the reason above it could be either male or female. But the males pop more in color. - It allows the female to pick the best male available, apparently this is what they do in the wild. Note, once paired they often go back to the same partner. Even if a 'better' partner is available. Like yourself I prefer to breed purple breasted Gouldians. Mutations are generally weaker, unfortunately it is hard to find pure wild types. Another reason to not breed white to white is that the 'whiteness' diminishes. I'd definitely recommend adding an orange/yellow headed pair, though they can be tricky to find. Talking head coloration. You'll have more success breeding the same head colors (red to red). Mixed pairs produce less viable young and there's a gender imbalance in the offspring. You can find papers about this phenomena where they even painted the cock bird to verify that hypothesis. Another note is that red heads are slightly more aggressive (they're still very docile when compared to other types of finches). Pairing that bit of information with the fact that the red gene is dominant over black I tend to keep more black headed pairs than red headed (or at least I strive to). Unfortunately I lost a lot of birds this summer at the peak of the breeding cycle. All of my breeding pairs lost a partner (owl visited at night, stress probably killed them). Currently I have 14 Gouldians remaining (of which 4 juveniles, two separate nests). 6-4 males to females 4-3-3 black, red and orange heads 6-1-3 purple, lilac and white breasts My current breeding goal is to establish a strong orange headed purple breasted line.

Thank You for sharing. I started with 2 pairs of yellow backs and 1 pairs of green back this last year. Now I have 12 yellow backs and 5 green backs . The cage that I keep them in is . 2'x4'x8' . I do keep owl finches and a pair of canary's . In other cases. Most of what I have learned about keep finches comes from You and Echo's Aviary. Thank Y'all soooooooo much. It has been fun. I've done a lot of things in my 75 year but this is the best of all . Thank You and have a fantastic day!!!!!

Hello. I love the new aviary and Lady Gouldians were one of my favorites to breed. The normal green back, purple breast is still the most beautiful to me. I had many color mutations. I successfully colony bred my Gouldians using 6 pairs even number of males and females. The main thing I learned is spacing out the nesting boxes so they have their own territory so to speak. Stagger them....some higher, some lower and put more boxes than number of pairs. I always would remove the fledglings once eating well on their own and banded them. Only keep the parents in the aviary to avoid inbreeding later. I would sell the young in pairs by band colors from different parents. Good luck and looking forward to your next video! Happy Holidays!

I also colony breed Gouldians, I have aroung 9 pairs, but I much prefer yellow birds to white breasts although I have some of each as well as normals ,I keep them with 2 pairs of red headed parrot finches. In my scond aviary I have tricoloured finches and a pair of Bourkes, When I kept the Tricolours with the parrot finches they hybridised, but the young never lived through their first yesr.

I think your aviary looks nothing like the natural habitat of Gouldian's and I've seen red and black faced together in the wild feeding on the ground. You should live in your lovely aviary and return the birds to where they belong. That won't happen I know but I hope one day that poachers of these birds will be hammered under the law. So many people profess to love these birds while wild stocks are being decimated. Edit One of your commenters in the Netherlands no less is lamenting the difficulty in finding pure wild types. Apparently he finds some significance in heating his aviary to 10 degrees when these birds are typically found in 30 degree plus regions.
