Out of his wealth of tool and die making experiences, Carl Sommer began in the machining trade in 1949 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He demonstrates the old fashioned way how they heat heated O1 tool steel for their tool and dies, and how they made their dies and punches with the aid of a filing machine and hand files. Then he made precisions dies by form grinding, and then came the revolution where wire EDM was introduced.
Sommer, president of Reliable EDM, worked as a tool and diemaker, machinist, foreman, tool designer, and operations manager for a large tool, die, and stamping company.
There's also much more free information about EDM and die making in the highly-acclaimed book, Complete EDM Handbook, written by Carl Sommer and his son, Steve, mechanical engineer, at www.ReliableEDM.com.

Back in the day, I used a file machine for making tryout templates only. When the blank shape was determined, I roughed the trim steel cutting edges out on the Bridgeport, established joint lines between the sections from the template, using die located pilot holes in the template. Hardened the trim steels, and surface ground the trim lines of the die to match the template using a light underneath. Ground in the slug relief, assembled, and then using a hand grinder, hand ground the very edge of the punch to fit the die, and then streaked the sides of the punch to match the hand ground edge back on the surface grinder. Believe it or not, the process was actually quite fast.

Thank you very much for your amazing videos! I am absolutely sure that without such a great people no progress in the world is possible. I am from Ukraine and I have several relatives of your age who worked for former Soviet industrial giants like Antonov and NKMZ. You are real heroes for me! Thanks for sharing your valuable experience with younger generation! God bless you!

Its awesome that you put the book out for free, and the hard version only cost 50 dollars. You know how much some people charge for text books?
