Really great stuff. I get tensed up as all get out when I'm doing double third riffs/runs a la Pete Johnson's "Roll 'Em Pete/It's All Right" ... Baby steps down the hall ... Baby steps onto the elevator

I noticed my fingers on the left hand were raised every time I hit a note, and I noticed how close yours were to the keys and I’ve been trying to copy your action. I didn’t realise other people had the same problem. Thanks for pointing this out and giving us ideas on how to rectify the problem. Really enjoying your lessons.

Thank you for adding that it is retraining the nervous system and it takes the time it takes. This helps me a lot in our current lessons because I feel like I'm not getting things fast enough. I guess this isn't the Matrix (darn). It's old fashioned elbow grease.

Woah really hope this will help, had some serious pain in my fingers after playing for an hour or so. Gonna practice playing with relaxed fingers first thing tomorrow morning!

Hope it helps! If pain persists past 2 weeks then it might be a good idea to get an in-person piano teacher that can help you with posture, positioning and relaxation. A good hand therapist may also be able to spot your problem and screen for anything more serious, as well as provide some immediate relief.

Thanks Arthur. I just started with Hanon this week and it had an instant impact of my ability to move my hands. Now I am gonna play through the book doing the relaxed style as you pointed out here and in your book. I wonder what target tempo do you suggest should be mastered before advancing to the next exercise? Thanks again.

That’s great! When practicing this technique it doesn’t matter which ones you use. You can use major scales or any of the hanon exercises. I kept mine in the 45-60bpm range and played them as quarter notes (which is extremely slow) for about 6 months.
