Something seems off…..a 24” barrel should get you >3200 fps with normal factory ammo for a 55 FMJ round.
@R1j0hn
@R1j0hn 2 жыл бұрын
The point of handloading isn't to achieve maximum velocity, or to blindly mimic factory ammo speeds... It's maximum accuracy, which sometimes means slowing a bullet down from typical factory ammo muzzle velocities. YMMV And in some cases guys load ammo at a reduced powder charge for plinking ammo, for reduced recoil or to make their powder-supply last longer.

@@R1j0hn For that load, his numbers are VERY low. 27gr of CFE under a 55 should easily be over 3200 in in that long barrel and in the 3000 or so range for the 16in AR.

Probably ran out of case capacity. CFE223 is a really slow powder for .223 and 55 gr. from what I heard and is better for heavier bullets such as 62 or 75-77 (I don't use it much cause it's mediocre) H335 is a more suitable powder for this caliber

2450fps only?? There must be some kind of mistake, my 18" barrel produced 3125fps across 10 shots with older TAC 223 ammo. Reloads: 3154fps with 55gr and 25.6gr Benchmark powder seated 2.2" measured with Lab Radar. With other powders it's in 3000 - 3100 range. Even with 16" barrel I would expect it to be in 2900 - 3000 range.

Out of my 20” 27.8grs of CFE223 gave me a average velocity of 3098fps a SD of 31.6. Then I tested 27.0grs of IMR 4320. I got a average of 3086 fps and a SD of 7.6 big difference in SD # with close to the same velocity. It’s to bad the 4320 is no longer made. I like cfe 223 a lot it’s a good powder I just don’t think it mixes well with the Berrys 55gr fmj. I’m kinda confused however your data is really slow compared to mine. You were 0.8grs lighter than me but the bolt gun should have been the the 2900 fps I would think.

I bought a 500 round box of these around three years ago. I had nothing but problems with them. They seemed to deform when crimping no matter how little crimp. The diameter was off on some of them. Some would be tight without crimping and others would just fall right in to the case without seating them. I try to spend my money with local companies, but when it comes to these bullets I just save my money. Just a note I have never had a problem with their pistol bullets, and purchase them quite often.

I have a question, 193 ball by lake city Federal was over 3200 fps out of a 20 inch barrel on a M16 A2, that’s the speed that they designed for be use of the terminal damage to said target. Out of a 16 inch I’ve read that you can expect 2900 fps on target again terminal ballistics says it kills said target. Is it not better to get the 2900 fps. am I wrong about the subject. A .224 is only effective against a target if it has velocity enough to make that bullet yah during the entrance to the target. I question the 2400 fps ability to meaningly effect a target down range. Once again am I wrong, have I got my data skewed.
@PBVader
@PBVader 2 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can think of is brass case cap. Lake city in 308 is 2 to 3 grains smaller than Win and others alike, resulting in higher pressures and velocity.
@Burris19D
@Burris19D 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, more velocity is better and I believe either his chrono is wrong in this video or he did not load 27.0 gr like he said since CFE 223 should be pushing close to that 2900 fps with that load. I like to load for max velocity as long as the accuracy is still there, with 5.56/223 velocity is what matters most on target. For that matter, velocity matters most for pretty much every round. With all the testing I've seen over the years the standard FMJ round will fragment violently at 2900-3200fps. And will fragment decently at 2600-2900fps with some still fragmenting slightly down to 2500fps or slightly less. But this depends on the yaw of the round entering the target and every round will not always fragment. If you want good self defense rounds use either a bonded SP like the Federal Fusion/ Speer Gold Dots which can be had for reloading and will expand reliably down to around 2200fps if memory serves. Or use a heavy OTM round like the 68-69gr or 75-77gr Sierra SMK or Nosler, or Hornady. The heavy OTM rounds almost always produce the most damage on target when looking at ballistics gel and real meat tests but if you are shooting through barriers like glass, car doors, interior walls etc. the bonded SP rounds kick butt. A good mix of bonded SP rounds and heavy OTM rounds is perfect for loading up for defense. And the lightweight 55 and even 62gr FMJ at times do very well if it's all you have and you push them fast. But when reloading it doesn't cost much more to load good rounds over cheap FMJ rounds especially if you buy factory pulled down bullets from places like American Reloading. I've bought a lot of bonded SP rounds for way under $100 per k when in stock and on sale. If you use the 62gr try to get the regular lead core version like Hornady sells since it should fragment better then the SS109/green tip rounds with steel inside. If you read this novel, I hope it answered something.

@kyncaith
@kyncaith 2 жыл бұрын
Magnum small rifle primers (like CCI 450) are often used in semi-auto rifles like the AR with a floating firing pin because the cups are harder. In fact the CCI 41s, which are the 5.56 NATO primers, have the exact same cup construction as the 450s and, from what I've read, the same priming compound. The only difference is the 41s anvil is shorter, which requires more primer strike. All of this is of course meant to reduce the odds of slam fires.
