Thanks for the information on whether you have a tapered shell or a straight walled shell using a clay Buster wad, Cheers....Take Care and Be Safe.

It's 2023. I think the straight hulls can identify as tapered hulls now.

Straight wall hulls, technically called "Riefenhauser" hulls, are typically associated with Federal & European manufacture. Tapered hulls, Remington STS & old Winchester AA for example, are technically "Compression Formed". These use two different manufacturing processes. For basic understanding, compression formed is a plastic forging while Riefenhauser is an assembly of parts. Both methods can make very good hulls. Both methods have pro's & con's. There is a lot of overlap too. For instance, the old Win AA is compression formed while the newer Win AA-HS is Riefenhauser made to mimic the internal profile of the old AA's for the sake of interchangeability. Note however that there are no hard & fast rules here. There are Federal's with compression hulls having more capacity than Riefenhauser's and Remington & Winchester hulls with Riefenhauser construction. Also there are contract hulls that are made by one company but marketed in the name of another. Sectioning hulls as you have shown goes a long way to knowing what you have. American components are manufactured to SAAMI specs (Imperial) while European ammo is made per CIP spec (metric). Side notes, US SAAMI 209 primers are a wee bit smaller then European CIP 209 primers, typically, hence the bad reputation of European 209 primers in American hulls. Also, for example, 2 3/4"-70mm is not a hard rule, it's a maximum spec, 2 5/8- 65mm is still called as 2 3/4-70mm. it's about the gun chamber, not the shell. Match components according to your hulls and many issues will be solved. Sorting your hulls by length will also solve many crimping problems. I hope this helps everyone. Happy shooting Y'all!

Great info, thanks for sharing. I always cut them open if I'm unsure. I also had just collected enough of the ones I'm going to need for the foreseeable future and donated the rest to a shooting buddy. Do you know of a good way to "wash" them? Thanks!

@@DummyRound I've tried many things, mostly with poor results. Tumbling in dry media packs fine dust into every possible nook & cranny, not good. Wet cleaning methods puts moisture under the head, also not good especially with paper hull parts. Dirty vs. filthy is a subjective call. The best way I know really to remove clinging dirt & grit is with a soft cloth or paper towel as part of my basic inspection before loading. The really important thing is to clean the inside of foreign objects like grass, dead bugs, sand, etc. Hulls pick up all kinds of stuff when they hit the ground (especially with pick-ups!). A good light and long handle Q-Tips work well for this. There is little one can do about scorching or discoloration. The big thing to me is to not introduce abrasive grit into my loader or gun via a filthy hull/shell.

You can flare out the obturating cup on the wads to allow them to work in anything. A pair of pliers works very well for it

You can use the tapered wads in straight wall hulls as long as you put a one inch square of tissue paper or napkin to stop the powder migration
@joearledge1
@joearledge1 Жыл бұрын
Yep works great! An alternative I used to use before that was well known was just an over powder card, either a 1/8" nitro card or an over shot card or similar. If your powder is high enough or you add a fiber wad or something over the powder, you can use straight wads in tapered hulls, but capacity is pretty limited.

Dummy, THANKS for the show and tell on the hulls!! 👍👍 Couldn't you just put a card on top of the powder like BP before the wad? Probably could use manila folder paper or even cereal box. Just get a punch that size or I have seen guys take a hole saw, grind the teeth off and put it in a drill chuck to make it faster.
@DummyRound
@DummyRound Жыл бұрын
No problem! And yes, as some others have mentioned in their comments, you can simply use an over shot card to keep the powder and shot column in place. Thanks!

Tapered wads work with flake powders. It's ball powders or granular powders that cause powder migration with tapered wads.

Federal stopped making their 20-gauge wads available as components, though iirc they haven't discontinued them. OTOH there's an ass-ton of recipes from Lyman's Shotshell Reloading manual and in the 5th Edition Reloading for Shotgunners manual that use the WAA20 wad (or the Claybusters clone) or Remington SP20 or RXP20 wads in straight-wall cases. Most of these loads are either 7/8th Oz. field loads or 1 Oz. loads though. Reloading for Shotgunners also has data for the Gualandi wads that Ballistic Products has rebranded as their SG20 series. They show up in both straight-wall and taper cases so there's a lot of variety there.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try a little piece of paper or over powder card if I have to go with tapered hulls in a straight case, as others have mentioned. I just got the Lyman Shotshell reloading handbook, it's a great manual.

I purchased 500 GunClub one piece tapered hulls and as of yet been unable to find a wad that does leave so much space that the powder rattles around when loaded! I'd love to see one taken apart to see how much space is in the factory GunClub hull.

I've only picked them up from the range, but pretty much any Remington variety are my go-to if I can help it. The Claybuster wads work great if you match them to your payload. The Nitro and STS are my favorites 👍🇺🇲

What happens if you mix them up and put a straight wad in a tapered hull? seems it would fire just fine.
@DummyRound

Some people have zero issues, some have ignition issues due to powder leaking and not sealing up properly and reaching the desired peak pressure. Sometimes called a "blooper". It might act like a blank and shot just roll out the barrel, or cause a potential squib, or any other sort of problem along those lines.
@Billbobaker
@Billbobaker Жыл бұрын
@@DummyRound but a straight wad in a tapered hull would be a very tight seal wouldn't it? Thanks for the reply.
@DummyRound
@DummyRound Жыл бұрын
If you can seat it far enough you should be good, but a taper hull in straight wall will have more slop. You can use an overshot card or something similar to help seal the powder off before the wad, too.
