This bridge is in the wrong spot, so the guitar can’t play in tune. Rather than drill new holes in a vintage guitar body, Dan Erlewine comes up with a clever solution.

That comment that Dan makes begs the question...wouldn't a "proper" fix...like plugging and redrilling...actually HELP the value of the guitar? Why would anyone EVER go back to stock when the intonation is that bad off? Why not fix it right, then the value should go UP because Gibson's error was expertly corrected. The vintage guitar market is such a mystery to me. I suppose I'll just keep building my own guitars instead of buying... :)
@JillandKevin
@JillandKevin 4 жыл бұрын
@@wescanaday8336 Although it seems logical to do the job "right", there are many collectors out there who care not a bit whether a guitar plays in tune. They want it as it came from the factory. Even the most perfect re-finish knocks the value of a vintage guitar in half (yep, I said 1/2!). No logic there either! Gibson (and Epiphone when they were made by Gibson in Kalamazoo) place hundreds, if not thousands, of bridges incorrectly, while Fender sent thousands of Telecasters out with three barrel telecaster bridges, which, again, couldn't be properly compensated, and there are still idiots out there that insist that "if it was good enough for so and so, it's good enough for me"". Kinda makes you wonder... I used to put those wide Schaller bridges on my 335's and Epiphone Rivieras. There was enough adjustment to get them fairly well intonated (and added sustain as well)

@@wescanaday8336 nah, the vintage market is silly. Original is best. There are some pundits that argue a guitar is no longer original anymore if someone pulled the neck off to verify the date- that’s how nuts some of those folks get.

The way this repair was done, the bridge can be moved out of intonation and out of center by rotating it up and to the right or down and to the right around those offset pegs. Doesn't seem like the best solution.

Not trying to promote or anything but i just uploaded a video about an exact issue on my Epiphone Les Paul. From the Nut to the middle of the 12th is 30cm and from the middle of the 12th to the saddle is....32.5cm. So now I need to do something similar to what was done in this video if i want the thing to ever play in tune.
@HBSuccess
@HBSuccess 9 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Leites You got your answers - but let me throw this in... this is why *some* Gibsons become worth a small fortune while other ones get turned into firewood. The 10% that survive un-touched were the really good ones that didn't need any cobbling, had enough glue/clamps used so they hung together, etc etc. It's also why I would not buy any Gibson even today without playing it and doing things like checking the intonation. Or at the very least I'd work with a company like Sweetwater that has reliable reps who can check that stuff for you before they ship.

+Jeff Leites My 2007 VOS SG has this same issue, apparently because it has to be 100% vintage accurate, and the old ones weren't set up to use light gauge strings. Nowadays, they're pretty accurate though (at least with the non-Historic models).

1:26 So to get the bridge moved back the holes need to also move back as well. One way would be to plug the holes and re-drill them a little closer to the Tailpiece. But this Electric Guitar costs a lot of money and we don't want it to break. So we'll do this in a very clever and innovative way for this one. Well use these Special offset Posts which have the threaded part closer to the edge.

Cool idea and great fix. Kudos... I just got an LP clone guitar recently that has screws to adjust the Tune-O-Matic style bridge, rather then the Gibson type thumb wheels. It's a chrome bridge and I'd like to lower it, but not sure if I can just loosen the strings and then use a screw driver to make the height adjustment or is there a specialized tool for a bridge with the screws, rather then thumb wheels, to avoid marring the chrome surface...Thanks as always... BTW: I bought that same vice from you guys at StewMac (that you show in the video) and absolutely love it! Philip NYC Area

I have a Harley Benton TE-40 and I could not get the tune o magic low enough to give me decent action. I read that many people have had issues with tune o matic bridge height as well. I removed the bridge and with a metal file brought it down enough to finally work. I also found that some of these will not let the adjustment screw to pass through the top and a little careful filling might give a couple more millimeters to work with. I decided to go this way instead of shimming the neck. There are lower profile bridges but this is just a knock around guitar and I saved myself a couple hundred dollars.

I measured from zero fret to 12th fret center and was about to mount it exactily twice to the center of the new bridge. Then you add the extra 9/64" for compensation. Is this universal? I've also heard to add an extra 1/8" to the base side. I assume I shouldn't do both. BTW, the old bridge was located 1/4" too short).

What's the physics explanation for the nut-to-12th distance being shorter than the 12th-to-bridge distance? Something to do with string core diameter. Ok but why is the difference so large? And why are thicker guage string sets easier to intonate? Also, if you're just intonating for the 12th fret, doesn't it just get it off intonation at some other location then?

I was reunited with my first guitar I traded back in high school. The person I traded with lost the bridge. The problem it's not your standard bridge and all signs point to a Japanese guitar. One place told me they think it's a Goya. I saw a custom 63 Red Goya Eko Hagstrom. The tremolo set up looks exactly like a this particular custom guitar. When I bought the guitar the headstock said Gibson. I know now it's not a Gibson and the neck finally broke at the headstock. Plus the headstock isn't your typical Gibson headstock. My nephew found a Gibson Corvus that has a similar headstock to the neck it had. Long story short they told me I can use any Fender neck on this guitar but the bridge measures at 2 11/16 or 68.26 MM from post to post. Where can I find that size of bridge? Desperate in Denton TX.

This video is discussing a fix for an ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic bridge that has been installed slightly out of the proper position. To adapt this fix for a Nashville Tune-o-Matic bridge, all you'd need to do is create the same offset thumb wheel, but with a threaded post that will screw into the bushings.

I wonder if you guys can help. I have a guitar with a Floyd Rose trem in it. I want to get rid of it completely and put a Tune-O-Matic on. I dont want to block it, I want rid of it. Is there a way to do it that isn't an excessive amount of work? My guess at what would be involved as a minimum would be this. 1. Take trem, springs and bracket off. 2. Take out pins and bushes. 3. Dowel the pin holes. 4. Clean out and prep the trem cavity. 5. Make blocks and glue them into the trem cavity. 6. Sand level. 7. Fit Tune-O-matic bridge. 8. Remove hardware and paint / touch-up as required. 9. Refit Tune-O-Matic, string up guitar and be happy. Have I missed something here? The guitar is a 25.5 scale ESP with a Floyd Rose Special so how do I deal with the string spacing? Do I just get a regular Tune-O-Matic and cut notches in the saddles to suit the wider than Gibson spacing? Is there something of the shelf that has the right spacing. Am I fundamentally missing something that would prohibit me from doing this, neck angle or such like? Ok, I have said I don't want to block the trem but how about a tutorial on how to do just that. I know what to do but you guys always have clever ideas that somehow make things way simpler or better.

what if you have a newer 335 and you need to relocate the larger tunomatic bridge posts back 2mm or 3mm? do you have an offset pin for that?

Just plug and redrill the holes. It's a better fix.

I too am in need of this fix, if anyone knows where I might purchase these compensated thumb wheels. I emailed Dan just now, to see if he'd be willing to do this for a Schaller roller bridge single wheel type.
