Remains of a Railway Yard Hidden in the Woods
Tibshelf Sidings in Derbyshire was once a busy and important part of the Railway & Coal distribution network of the UK. Numerous sidings and a junction were sprawled out alongside the Erewash Valley Railway Line in Derbyshire and closed in the late 1980s as the collieries in the area began to decline.
In this video i go in search of any remains of Tibshelf Sidings. Yes, there are a few good ones!

Accident Sept 1968 class 20 D8163 & D8189 Both repaired at Crewe Works. Train ran away coming into the Sidings onto a loaded road. Train crew jumped clear.

Great video I'm a train driver for DB and remember loads of yards just like this in the eighties fond memories of waiting in the mess rooms for your train Great bunch of guys we had such a fun time. If you see any Railway chairs most had the date of manufacture stamped on them you will be surprised about how early they are especially in old yards 😮

Blimey I remember in the mid 60s going to Toton Stapleford & Sandiacre station from Barnsley in my teens, seeing Westhouses station and a triangle of line to the left. Then when I got my car licence I went to Westhouses shed and took some photos of loads of class 20's. I also went to Toton sheds & took loads of photos of the engines there. THE GOOD OLD DAYS. Thanks for reminding me of my youth.

Absolutely brilliant, Been there and its great to have a rummage and find stuff, proper railway exploration , if you enjoy exploring like this, go back to Mansfield concentration sidings, and look opposite the water tower, follow the track formation back, lots of signalling posts still there that have been discarded...there is nothing in the early sidings, but look closely in the lower sidings, there are a few gems in there...loved this video, one of my favourites, well done...👏👍

The portakabin in the photos was most likely a TOPS installation. Total Operations Processing System was initiated in the 70's. It provided computer terminals and printers at freight yards linked to a IBM mainframe computer in Marylebone (London). Every freight wagon was in a database and yards would receive listings of wagons coming in. They would sort them as appropriate and then, when the train departed, send the data back into the system. In this way wagon utilisation was improved - probably by 20+ %. This then meant that older wagons could be scrapped and maintenance costs saved. While little shunting was done in these colliery yards train formations would be assembled in the large yards like Toton and Tinsley . The system was improved and modified over the years and now manages all vehicles on the UK rail network. Operators across the country can see where any wagon/coach/engine etc. Is.

You would not believe there would be all those tracks & signals & trains in those woods & all the chat & banter in that siding hut from the railway workers, what an amazing find! Well done. Well done, Its much more overgrown than i remember it. maybe a trip later in the year when there is less undergrowth. lots of bits and bobs on the ground to puzzle over. The Woodhouse sidings are worth a look too!

Really enjoyable ramble through the bushes Ant - staggering how quickly trees take over a deserted area. I enjoyed seeing the shots, and video, of the Merry Go Round trains - maybe the MGRs deserves a video of it's own showing the routes still open and the closed ones - many of which you have visited. The MGR system was sound until there was a strike and they discovered there was not enough siding space to hold all the trains!

Back in the sixties I used to travel a lot between Nottingham and Sheffield on the then new M1. The heavy industry, coal and rail has now mostly gone replaced by various warehouses and factory units. The huge amount of landscaping of old spoll heaps as well. Amazing the change in less than a lifetime. Great production Ant, as usual. Brilliant archives for future generations.

Love your work mate; always find myself just getting engrossed into all of your videos. It's strange, being born in the early 90s and therefore after most pits had closed round Mansfield & surrounding areas, it's hard for me to picture that our town once had these booming coal & textile industries. Its a real shame, but your videos make me nostalgic for a time I've never seen. ..as I say, love your work, keep it up! Very informative above all else 👏 😊

Ant, what looked like a disappointing venture, turned out to be a great discovery. That shunters quarters and mess room were a very good find after all that time that the yard had closed. The other yard lamp finds were amazing too. It's again, hard to take it in that the place was so busy, with all that merry-go-round coal traffic just gone forever! The photo in the mess-room of the rail staff, I guess that the drivers would no doubt have been Toton men. Most of the locos would have been from that depot, too. They lost a hell of a lot of work when all the collieries closed. Anyhow, many thanks for this enjoyable film.

Absolutely awesome video. It's very interesting. I always find on railway explorations that the best things are always well hidden. It's definitely worth going off track and deviating into woodlands because they often hold secrets. Again, great video

Excellent video footage Ant, just love it. Just thought I would let you know the type of fishplate you found near the platelayers hut. It's known as a junction plate, or transition plate. It is used when the type of rail changes from Bullhead rail (95) to Flatbottom (113).

When we think of the end of coal mining we don't tend to think of the knock on effect in other industries that supported the coal industry, Tibby is a great example of this, wherever there was coal there were railways, when coal went so did they. Not only the drivers, track workers, signalmen etc lost jobs but all the rail support industries too. I don't think anyone has ever worked out the wider consequences but it must have been massive.

The modern building would've been relocated at about when the yard was officially closed. The brick buildings would've been the last assets still being used when the last tracks were lifted.

I’m old,,,, how can trees grow that quickly , I used to explore buildings from the war when it was 1980 and felt it was hundreds of years ago and now if I went to derby area my mind expects to see old locos and yards but you now show me this it’s shocked me, how time has eaten up the yard , sad

Whilst Accurascale can be applauded for the range of mineral wagons being produced, at £25 each they are taking the proverbial! These were found in their hundreds in all states of use on the railway and if you wanted just 10 it would cost you £250. Who are they expecting to buy these - not your average modeller.
