Remarkable 2 has sold over 1,000,000+ units. So there is something to be said for its quality.
But its time in the sun is over. Here comes the heaviest-hitter in the industry; the Tab C

Great video. However, what I am still struggling with is what is the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C? Is it a Remarkable 2 on steroids or is it a very poor replacement for an iPad Pro or Android tablet like the Galaxy Tab S? If writing on the device feels like writing on glass, and if the screen isn’t as good as the remarkable or the iPad from what I can see, then why on earth would anyone buy this device? It costs as much as an iPad, yet does nothing as well as an iPad. So it would seem that if I want an E-Tablet to be a paper replacement then I buy the Remarkable 2, if I need a reading device then I get the Amazon Kindle (Scribe), and if I want a tablet that does everything, then I buy an iPad or Android tablet like the Samsung Tab S. So what is the Onyx Book Ultra Tab C and who should buy one?

understandable point of view, i had agreed with you at one point. Epaper screens with or without color has a lot of inherent benefits over LCD. The lighting is front lit, meaning it looks more like a reading lamp than something shining into your eyes. With something like a Remarkable you are very intentionally limited. PDF and EPUb only. No applications or anything. That can indeed be a benefit. but for me and i would think a lot of others, not being tied to one ecosystem with a device like this is a lot better. i love my Remarkable 2, but my tab ultra (and the ultra c when i get it) gets a lot more use because i can get the benefits of the Remarkable with a ton of other functionality.

@@BlazeingGoldReviews Is the note taking experience sufficient on the Tab Ultra? I want to get one of these, primarily for note taking and reading. The remarkable would be perfect if it weren't for the lack of lighting and the limitations around sending notes to other apps, so I'm probably going to go with the Tab Ultra C

You are wrong on 2 points. The iPad is not as good as the tab Ultra C when it comes to sketching and note- taking. It is also much worse when reading, as it is not made for that purpose. BUT, the Onyx is as good or better than the iPad when it comes to several use- cases. And so it is all in all better than both the Remarkable and the iPad. The only area in which it lacks is the multi- media department. So while the iPad can be used for everything, that does not equate to it being the best at everything.

I've had the Remarkable for a few years now. It's still like new, and build quality held up. Remarkable is a XXI replacement for your paper notebook. It's not trying to be a PDA. It's for reading, writing, and sketching, and the whole infrastructure supports that. Which gives you uncluttered experience and long battery. The two drawbacks it has: no backlight and no physical "fwd" button for when my hands are wet and dirty. The Onyx (which I also have) is a PDA. You can turn it into a mobile office if you want, but then you'll find that your smart phone still does that better, and that it is too big to be always with you. I already have a smart phone and a laptop.

Having started it on onyx, since switching to a remarkable2 I never looked back. For the writing experience, it's not even a competition. The "you can do everything" might stand. But it's only kinda true. Android Applications rarely work as well as you'd expect. Which was fine in my case, I wanted to take notes. And the onyx note app is great. But the outdated android version, the horrendous security and support track record and finally there behind the scenes "calling home to China" just didn't sit right with me. The onyx I used was an excellent introduction into eInk tablet, but the OG just can't be beat, yet. The subscription is not needed for synchronization anymore. So that argument doesn't really stand anymore....

if renarkable decides to add a couple features it will be the perfect choice for someone who only wants to replace paper. It is not a tablet and shouldn't be judged as one. Is a note-taking instrument and nothing more. I am writing on paper (a lot) for my job all day long, it would perfect to replace and eventually file my hand written notes. I do not need a google play to buzz me with updates, but I want a free of charge mailing service.

Honestly, I really hope remarkable does not succumb to the pressure and go on with android for next iterations. I appreciate and consider precious any home-grown attempt. Maybe I'm with the minority, but I actually prefer not having features over having mediocre experiences (especially ones that fit better on other devices). Other than book/comic reading, note taking and forwarding the sketching capabilities for use as a presentation canvas, I can't think of anything else the current e-ink technologies would provide a better experience for. I'm don't have a Remarlable (just a kindle paperwhite), and I don't consider it (the Remarkable 2) perfect either. I woule like more note-taking features like the shapes you mentioned for example, and possibly a color screen for comics (even though I still feel there is room for book-oriented devices without color with the current status of color screens). Funnily enough, I don't find frontlight to be that important. I don't really use it with my Paperwhite, even though I'm a heavy night reader. I find it less exhausting for my eyes to have ambient light comming from a source behind me than staring at one well lit screen for a long time. My ideal device would have it though, just for the places where such light is not available. Meh sorry for the long comment. Even though I love android, I have many feelings about android e-ink devices...

I think it’s a fair point to say you can turn off notifications or uninstall apps and so on if you want to be left alone. But I can still see why someone would buy a remarkable now. It has that great writing feel (and I’ve been writing on my iPad recently so I would really like that grippy feel), it doesn’t rely on Android in the same way, and it’s probably going to be more reliable for a longer time as a result. And if you’re just writing with it mostly, then I don’t think the lack of a backlight will be a huge issue. As long as you have some light, I think you can write ok. Reading is the problem, but it’s likely that most people buy it just to write on anyway.

The boox is not going to give me the writing experience I desire. The ReMarkable does, but I can't get around the monthly fee to convert to normal text. Not to mention how they sell the whole package individually and you end up spending like another 160 euro for a keyboard... Or the fact that the eraser of the "improved" pen doesn't come as standard once you pay for the standard pen (80 euro). You need an additional 50 euro on top of that. So we're looking at a whopping 650euro (~$700) for technology that is essentially wayyy outdated, technology before the pandemic.

Well, one of the first benefits would be that e-ink devices are distraction free. You won't be tempted to go on KZfaq or Facebook while using it. It's also way better for the eyes. Also, a lot of people retain informations and study better while handwriting their notes, as opposed to typing it on a PC. But at the same time, if you don't have access to a computer on the side, keep in mind that you'll probably miss being able to do research on a proper browser, watching videos and so on.
