In a somewhat rare event on this channel, I decided to release two episodes of Remarkable Engines in the same month, this time a double feature with two locomotives being covered in this one episode. Even though they have similar histories, these two engines are known for their unique combinations of paint schemes, which make them stand out in a sea of standard paint schemes.

Nice video! The boxes behind the cab on the right side of a Dash 9 aren't generators, they are Air Conditioning units for the cab

the unit on the left is the a c unit. the right side are replacement battery box covers. one of the mods done were replacing the entire battery box due to corrosion and the covers are from newer era paint scheme.

I'm fortunate to have seen 1063 today as DPU on the Ft. Scott Sub. I like its patch job better than 965's

Back in days of steam,many engines,swapped out boilers,frames,and sundry other parts!! And on certain railroads,like the Erie,when there was a Guage change[from 6 foot,to standard],there was a wholesale rebuilding of motive power! So an engine would go in,a 6 foot Guage,and come out standard at the other end! In the middle,the recycling of parts,meant that the only thing about the ancestry of the engine,was it didn't have one,as the engines were considered new builds!! Also had road numbers,not corresponding to the old!! Add the PRR,as they would assign,and reassign,the same numbers to different Class engines,so one number could be filled with 5 or 6 locomotives,all different classes! For example,XX(number),A,G,H-2,D-16,K-4,etc.! All this,to keep the rail historian on his/ her toes!! Thank you for attention!! 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

If you want another slightly unusual Dash 9, I suggest 691, it's still dressed in full Santa Fe paint but has these really unusual replacement number boards with the "1" missing on the engineer's side board. In fact it just left the yard here in Thayer, Missouri as I'm typing this!

I think 965 actually looks really good. They should have made H3 that but with the swoosh logo and lettering. Side note: I saw my first H1 unit today in Deshler leading I171! 691 was also trailing on I172. It was a pleasant surprise, as I had no idea it was on the train. Pretty awesome day there!

When you first brought up the Dash 9 and BNSF, I was almost hoping you were going to mention 4723, which was featured on a lot of artwork for Microsoft Train SImulator. :3

Good news, 965 recently got PTC so it can lead again. Can't confirm if 1063 has it yet or not.

Wow, the H1 livery sure does look beautiful. Much nicer than H3 and H4! H2 was alright. I'd love to see a video on the locomotive Pendennis Castle. Started out on the GWR, then spent it's time on the same line as Sperry 140 in Australia for about 30 years, and just recently it has steamed again. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GWR_4073_Class_4079_Pendennis_Castle

Welll done! I seen my first H1 on visiting rails over a week ago, number was 1097. I’m surprised you didn’t honorable mentioned 1050.
@Pensyfan19
@Pensyfan19 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't choose 1050 since that's H2 lettering on H1 paint, while the episode focused more on paint scheme differences on the nose of the engine instead of a simple font change on its side.

3:27 Just a lil fact check, BNSF repainted very few Dash 9s into H3, just the ones that got rebuilt after wrecks and stuff, plenty still roam around in H2, H1, and Warbonnet/Fakebonnet. Most of the Dash 9s even came out of storage and acquired PTC, only a handful are still left in storage.

Thanks for that note. I thought that was the case since I couldn't find too many photos of H3 Dash 9s.

These variants of the BNSF livery would make for good custom liveries in the Rolling Line game. Also, have you heard of the GE BQ23-7? When I was researching then I found that they're technically the first 'wide-cab' design that GE built. As for why I was looking into the BQ23-7s in the first place, I was making a mini-documentary about them with inspiration from your series.

3:28 I have no idea whet you are talking about here, almost all dash 9s on BNSF's fleet are still very active; in some cases it's a 50/50 weather you'll get gevo power or dash 9 power on a BNSF train. Only a handful of them have been repainted into h3, either from wrecks or faded paint.

BNSF #1063 is different from #965 with #965s line not sloping down, while #1063s band is above the lights with the bottom line sloping down.

BNSF have plenty of these odd C44-9W paintjobs, for example there's 1050 with yellow H1 logo, 1113 with weird nose logo, 4102 with a H3 Swoosh logo after a nose rebuilt, 4729 which is the Frankenbonnet, and 5441 and 4331 which is a H2 but with a H1 engine door panel

BNSF #1063 & #965 look the same, but #965s band has the standard line instead of sloping down, while #1063s band is above the top headlights, with the bottom line sloping down.

I have to say, BNSF has always had some of the worst paint schemes post merger. The War bonnet paint scheme was so iconic and the BNSF orange is a little bit too...traffic cone for my taste.
