Happy F40PH Friday! The F40PH has always been one of the most well-known and respected American diesel locomotives ever made. However, the story of this F40 is unlike that of any other, as it was one of the last F40s working for Amtrak, a HEP equipped power car for the Alaska Railroad, American Orient Express and Ferromex, and became an excursion locomotive for the Iowa Northern shortline and Rock Island Railroad heritage unit! Sorry if I haven't been uploading as often, and if it took me a month to upload an episode of this series. I've been VERY busy with a lot of things all happening at once, and didn't have much time to work on these videos.
EDIT December 2023: It is with great sadness to announce that this unit has recently been scrapped due to CN acquiring the Iowa Northern Railroad.

I've heard of this locomotive, but I've learned a lot more about it from this video! It has had quite a variety of uses throughout its history: on Amtrak; on the Alaska Railroad as a leaser for the _Denali_ _Star;_ on the Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway (but leased to the American Orient Express for HEP); on Ferromex for _el_ _Chepe_ and the AOE; and now, on the Iowa Northern Railroad for excursion trains... and revenue freight trains! Thanks for the video!

Those E & F units could work! Although they may be low on hp, and are Gensets, they were reliable, and could have been rebuilt with an EMD 16-645E3, and a HEP Generator, and serve until the 90s.

The F40s, F59s, and F69s were the last great passenger locomotives made by EMD. The DE/DM30s are ok, but apparently are maintenance nightmares. The F125 has had *so many* issues, including: cracked engine blocks, the prime mover just randomly shutting down, traction motors that can be disabled by a wet leaf, and many others.
@amtrakinoscale9811
@amtrakinoscale9811 3 жыл бұрын
You can cut that list at F40s. The F59s really aren't as great as everyone thinks. F69s were a total failure, due to their problematic Siemens inverters.
@Pensyfan19

Depends on who you ask I suppose. I can see reasonable arguments for why all of the locomotives listed here can be good or bad. Every locomotive has its pluses and minuses.
@amtrakinoscale9811
@amtrakinoscale9811 3 жыл бұрын
@@Pensyfan19 If there’s an argument for F40s being bad, I don’t know about it. Sure, the originals only had 3000 hp and -2/3s only have 3200 hp, but they’re based on the 40 platform. The 40 platform was the last good thing EMD ever made, period. That’s why SD40-2s and GP40s are still in service, as well as F40s.

Thank you! Glad I could expand your knowledge of the locomotive. The purpose of Remarkable Engines is to focus and expand upon locomotives that aren't well-known in railroading, even those which have few photos of them. Such examples include PRR 4663 (a streamlined doodlebug railcar), UP 844 the GP30, and Tri-Rail 904 the FP7. I also plan on doing other little-known locomotives in the future including NREX 9402, Reading Railroad 178 (a semi-streamlined steam locomotive) and even the double-fairle Rio Grande locomotive!

I would think so since that's fewer axles. On the other hand, 6 axle power were considered smooth riders with even weight distribution. The SD9s were even called "Cadillacs" for their smooth riding.

Neat video man, there is one more f40 heritage unit though, metra f40phm-3 #211 is painted in a gray and red cbq paint scheme, the f40phm’s are quite unique themselves as they have a sloped streamlined cab giving them a look similar to a motorhome, because of this many rail fans have nicknamed the units winabagos

Thank you! I am well aware of 211 as it is my favorite Metra heritage unit, as well as the Amtrak F40 NPCU 40th anniversary train, but 678 was the first F40 to become a heritage unit for a shortline. Not too many locomotives can have that under their belt.

After doing some research on the locomotive and a few other locomotive series on KZfaq, I am going to have to decline this request for 6976, as Amtrakguy365 has already covered the locomotive in his SDP40F episode of Engines of Amtrak, and I do not want to go over a locomotive which another channel went over in detail. Thank you for suggesting this locomotive nonetheless as it shows that people are interested in the series, and the next locomotive to be covered in the series (Green Mountain 405) was recommended to me by a fan of the series, so I will still listen to my fans and try to incorporate their ideas into my series.
@Reading3412Studios
@Reading3412Studios 3 жыл бұрын
Hey I don't know if your taking requests/suggestions for this series, but if you are I would like to recommend DRGW 5402. Drgw 5402 was an SD40t-2 that was involved in a wreck on the Tennessee Pass in 1989 with two other DRGW units (those being 3108 and 5408). Luckily, despite the fact that it was pretty banged up (photo here www.drgw.net/gallery/v/DRGWDieselContainer/SD40T-2s/DRGW5402/drgw_5402_pueblo_co_1989_000.jpg.html ) it was deemed repairable by NREX and was rebuilt was an SD40-2 in 1993 (photo here www.mountainrailway.com/Roster%20Archive/CP%205400/St.L&H%205449.htm ). It was then sold off to Canadian Pacific and became CP #5449 in 1994 then STLH 5449 in 1998. Then it was rebuilt again in the year 1999, and sold to FURX the following year where it became FURX 3021. Finally, after all of that, it was sold to the Alabama and Gulf Coast Railroad some time around 2013 where it still remains as AGR 3375. An interesting fact about this locomotive, is that its shared most of its history (post rebuild) with another engine, CNW 6910. CNW 6910 was involved in a wreck where it ended up being totally messed up (photos here www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1014562 and here www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1070155 ) and ended up being sold to be rebuilt and was bought up by CP and numbered 5447. Then it was sold to STLH, then FURX, and finally AGR. So if you haven't got it yes, the similarities of both engines are that ended up working on CP, STLH, FURX, and AGR because they where involved in two separate wrecks that made them end up switching owners, and ever since, they've been "living" almost the exact same existence.
