That picture does not depict an idyllic life, but one of poverty, destitution, and early infant mortality.

Not at all! It's may not be idyllic but it's certainly not poverty! The curtains are delicate and there are toys for children, which poor families did not have at the time. And the mother's look on her face shows love and not despair, her child is sleeping, not dead. Not to mention that it wouldn't have been the artist's style. This is an ordinary interior scene of this time period.
