A teacher showed it to me in ninth grade, he wasn’t the best teacher, I felt I missed out on some stuff I was really excited about but he was great at choosing films and giving us some life lessons

Especially since Ms. Lovett and Sweeney’s relationship is super toxic from both sides; she lies to him because she wants him for herself, as well as being the source/enabler for a lot of his most awful actions; and Sweeney is so hollowed out by grief and hatred that he CAN’T really have a relationship of any kind with anybody.

I agree completely, well-said! Black people are always expected to do the emotional labor of educating people and dismantling racism, when really everybody should be doing their part to spread awareness and understanding. If you start from a young age, it will be natural.

just be sure to be constructive in what you teach the kids.

Racism is a learned behaviour, so teaching them what it is and that it’s wrong needs to happen first. I’m mixed race in Ireland and have been assured it’s just “banter” but it’s definitely bad craic and it took me a while to realise I wasn’t “just sensitive.” Definitely important.

I like that aspect of the film...the white coach wasn't ghandi....he was still sorta racist and old school..boon was too sorta...he even picked on the black cocky star

I know that feeling. Here recently, one of my bosses has been taking out her frustrations in the way she treats myself and some of my coworkers - making me clean the bathroom twice over because a single thing wasn't done, refusing lunch breaks on 7 hour shifts, getting on hand and foot with a rag to clean dust off our equipment, huge cleaning lists that no two people can accomplish, stuff like that. And if it's not done or even done the way she likes, we shrink away at what she dishes out. And it's severely impacted our passion for work and helping our customers. Stepping away from doing your job well to keep out of the line of fire is all too familiar.

Yes, kind of, a little, not at all, definitely. Best example of it, is my sparing partner is a person I have deeply bonded with over the years. We both spar in a sport(ish) called Belegarth. So much of that bonding was through “how did you get that shot in?!?!?” Or him and I charging into a larger engagement and pinwheeling the entire formation with just our push. While we didn’t do ‘left side, strong side’ our phrase of choice is ‘Brotherhood of Red’ because of our preferred styles. The phrase is part of where bonding happens, but think of it more like an after dinner wine. The meat and potatoes happens before, even dessert sometimes happens before, but the phrase just puts a nice cap on it. The more I think on it as well it is an easy way to recall all those past experiences. When a charge goes less well, or when we are massively outnumbered/classed we can just shout ‘Brotherhood of Red’ and we either pull off the impossible or ‘die’ trying knowing we are not alone!

@edo0girl Agreed or they like hiding behind a screen knowing that anything they say can't come back to them. So some people just say horrible stuff to other people because they don't have to face anyone and can just block them before they say something. And this has given people thin skin because they don't have to face any consequences or own up to what they said.

@edo0girl No offense but the reason the two parties are against each other are because their ideologies are diametrically opposed, which means they have drastically different ways of addressed problems, viewing the worlds, and running different operations. The same is true for people discussing sensitive topics. The arguing comes from drastic differences which results in different ways of treating people, not just people "simply because they support different party members", which is the most oversimplified summary of the world at large that I've ever heard. People in politics and other topics didn't immediately start calling each other names and using threats from the get go; there was initial discussion and eventual fallout from the failure to reconcile on different fronts because it's difficult to find compromise on topics where the two sides are the exact opposite of each other. The only way you can look at the incredibly complex world of politics and sensitive topics and say "everyone is just arguing because they're thin skinned" is if you ignored every single detail of both sides and what they're arguing about before summarizing it into something oversimplified like "everyone is just ignoring what each other is saying". People fully hear what each other are saying and processing it, it's just that they disagree anyway because of their principles or because changing their approach to something might negatively impact their life. That's not being thin skinned, that's a clashing of personality types and self preservation.

I’d say it was always very relevant. It just seems that the problems are coming to another crescendo, which happens every so often.

@@khariahpayne sadly true. I realized, in the 8th grade, that hate never died off, it was hiding. Now's a good time to shrug off that hate and embrace that brotherhood kind of love for one another.
