As MLS clubs enter Round Four of the US Open Cup this week, let's take a look at one of the best stories from the competition's history. In 2016, FC Cincinnati joined the USL...and in their second year of existence, they reached the semifinal of the US Open Cup. This amazing run in 2017 gave them the boost needed to secure an MLS expansion franchise.

As much as it sucks, thats just never going to happen, thats not the MLS model. To join the MLS, FC Cincinnati had to pay a $500M expansion fee. That is the MLS model. I don't ever see the teams and league agreeing to a promotion system when that is how they set the league up. On top of that the USL markets are not attractive enough and teams do not make enough money to stay afloat when you are looking at the investments they have to make to join the MLS to start with. If an MLS team would get relogated, they would fold. To stay with FC Cincinnati to keep the example alive, they just built a huge stadium downtown and are paying their D.P.s a couple of million dollars (assisted by the league). If they were to get dropped down, they would immediately lose the MLS revenue share, lose their players, have no TV deal, and then just disappear. The stadium cost, and $500M expansion fee, and all of those players they signed would be to much to support. This could happen to premier league teams also, but the Championship Division in England still has good support, so yes they often lose their top players, but they don't necessarily have to fold. They also don't pay half a Billion to join the league. I'm agree with you that it would be great, but it just is not going to happen here.

Now *this* is the kind of history I love to learn about! I knew FC Cincinnati had their roots in the USL, and that their fans had a pretty intense rivalry with some obscure team named "Nashville SC," but not much more than that. Come to think of it, I do wonder why MLS seems so lukewarm when it comes to the Cincinnati-Nashville rivalry, now that both clubs are in the same league again. I guess with the Yotes switching conferences, the Hell is Real Derby is a more stable opportunity to give the Baileys a rival.

Remember? I lived it. As a fan of the sport I never thought it would take hold in my city. Other attempts came and went. FC Cincinnati was different, I signed up for season tickets in 2015 and there was a real sense of momentum. People were hungry for this and it blew all expectations away. That open Cup run was so magical with the Chicago match being some of the best atmosphere I've experienced. The only shame is as we sell out all 25,513 in our stadium for league play the Open Cup has been relegated as an after thought. We play Louisville this week and while I'm pumped to see our old rival back I'd be surprised if we can get 10K to turn out for it. I really wish it held a spot in our culture because nothing like it in US sports.

I'm from Cindy and I can confidently say that FCC was bound to succeed. Don't know why but Cindy in that period was very good at the youth soccer level. Several of the youth teams had won nationals and this was before there was an individual league for pro team academies. The market was most definitely there. the size of the success tho and just how quick it was I did not see coming.

Can’t even find most Open Cup matches on tv. I will not pay for this type of game when the fans don’t even care. Why should we care about it? Why should we care about MLS without pro/rel and with ridiculous conferences that serve the same useless purpose as NBA divisions? The EPL is always exciting, whether for the title, the European places, or avoiding the drop (and anyone who denies this is likely a Remain voter). Find an ordinary fan who watches the Concacaf CL, the InterLiga, the SuperLiga, the Leagues Cup, or whatever other contrived competition.

I believe the mls has absolutely been a money grab I could go on, but if we have a community that wants the real footy, the real footy will come. I believe we can have a league here that isn’t corrupted by money and I plan to give my life to that vision. Kids need this sport here, but we need it non pay to enter a league and we need pro/rel, we need several different leagues/tiers if you will. But videos like this show that there are people here that have the passion for the sport the real sport.

If by ‘earned’ you mean drew the attention of the MLS to a passionate market they can exploit. Sporting merit means nothing in US Soccer when you have an MLS monopoly on a closed system. Making sure expansion franchises go to markets in which they will succeed (aka good business practices) = exploitation. Soccer cannot succeed in America without focusing on strong markets, period. The US market cannot support a 2nd friggin' American football league, and it's their favorite sport among 4. If the MLS attempted to create a pyramid, it would collapse. This is why NDSU football can't even get on TV or sell out their own stadium in the playoffs despite being the single most successful football program in history relative to level. It's in the equivalent of English Championship of college football whereas the Alabamas and Georgias are Premiership. It's not top tier, Americans don't care. MLS knows this, and has organized accordingly.

I think we need promotion and relegation in order to succeed as a soccer playing nation. We need to have low tier MLS teams like San Jose get demoted. What really kickstarted FC Cincinnati was the clubs buy-in on marketing to the younger generation of Cincinnati residents and the students of the campus they played on. Living on campus those USL years was incredible and everybody became a fan of the team at the University, and with Cincinnati's brewery culture, and young population all residing around the lower east side and just across the river in NKY, the team was selling out every game and had fans at every local bar/brewery in town. I always say if any professional sports team needs a case study on how to build a brand with grassroots marketing and appealing to a younger audience, FC Cincinnati is the best example. Hell, they forced the Bengals, THE BENGALS, to change their perspective and brand. The Bengals were the same brand and team for 30+ years with no change. FC Cincinnati put the pressure on them, and suddenly Cincinnati goes from one of the worst pro sports towns to suddenly back towards the top.

I don’t think the open cup was the reason they got the expansion. I do think it helped though. Columbus getting screwed by their owner I believe was the main driving force. They though crew supports would be ok if they put a team close to them.

True…but also there were countless cities willing to pay that expansion fee that weren’t selected!

@@Anthony.LaRosa that’s is correct. FCC had a goal from the beginning to make the move. They did an excellent job marketing the program

MY DREAM PROMOTION AND RELEGATION RULES FOR AMERICAN SOCCER RELEGATION :is the 2 teams who Finish last in the eastern conference and western conference to play a game and the winner is saved and the loser gets relegated to usl and same thing for usl. But for USL 1 and 2. The team who Finish in last in each section do get split in to 2 groups and do a round robin tournament, last place in each group gets relegated. PROMOTION: first to 4 in the usl have a semi final mini tournament. With 1st plays 4th and 2nd play 3rd. The winner of each game go to a promotion final and winner goes to the MLS and qualify to their respective conference. For USL 1 and 2, the team in first of each group get split into 2 groups and first place of each group get promoted. CONCLUSION: With this system the teams of each league will play more games if they get to the promotion places and the teams will have a reason to play hard, and not have them as teams that just play the reserves of teams in the MLS.
