I too was a young Kopite when Tommy played for us. As some will know the Kop had and has a particular affinity with goalkeepers and in particular our own. I think we see our goalkeeper as one of us. We will give them unwavering support and try our best to put the opposition off to protect our goal. I loved Tommy's attitude, I loved his enthusiasm and I was always so proud of his skill and awareness. If memory serves me rightly I think Tommy held the record for a time of the fewest league goals conceded in the English top flight (24 in 1968/69). RIP our beloved Flying Pig

I remember about fifty years ago the talk was that Tommy Lawrence was the only person to save a Johnny Giles of Leeds penalty, who never ever missed.

My goodness, I didn't realise that Laura - that in itself is another feather in Tommy's cap. Giles was an extremely accurate passer of a ball and very secure from the penalty spot...

Tommy was a great keeper , we had Ray Clemence after him so we were spoilt with talent in that position.

Tommy Lawrence, always looked a bit tubby to me but wow, he was a terrific goalie. He was a legend who played in a team of legends. I for one will never forget them. I was just a schoolboy in those days and they were heroes. how times change.

A modest man who just got on with his job without a fuss. Seldom, if ever injured he was a permanent fixture for years. You seldom saw Tommy making memorable, great saves, mainly because his positional sense was so good. He knew all the angles and reduced the attackers options to the bare minimum. Also he was protected by such a solid defence, chances for the opposition were often reduced to a bare minimum. Tommy was excellent dealing with crosses, an important skill in those days when the ball was constantly being lobbed into penalty area and the goalies were faced with burly centre- forwards who took no prisoners. Remarkably I never saw him wear gloves. Nowadays goalies protect their hands with state of the art padded gloves. In my mind's eye I can still see him prowling the very edge of his penalty area as the flat back four pressed forward near the half way line, with the whole team pushing the opposition farther back into their own half. This left the Reds vulnerable to a quick counter-attack. The opposition occasionally passed the ball over or through the Liverpool defence, into the vast empty space behind them. My heart would be in my mouth, but then Tommy would rush out of his penalty area and clear the ball before any opposing forward could reach it. The original sweeper- keeper!

Just lovely and such a humble but wonderful man. I can remember beginning to support Liverpool and would study all the photos of the team. Tommy always stood out because he looked like the coal man (big, wide and jovial). Clem was young, tall and wide, but didn’t look old ? What I can say if it wasn’t for Ray Clemence Tommy Lawrence would have been known as a true legend of the game as Ray was simply magnificent. Wonderful piece and thanks for the post. Consider another one sold. RIP to two great guys but importantly two Liverpool FC keepers the greatest club in the world. YNWA

I hope the book sells well and Tom's legend never dies. Derby fan here. He nearly killed Kevin Hector at the Baseball Ground, when he landed on him. There was a hush around the ground until King Zak showed signs of life.

As a young Manchester lad (United) working in Liverpool in the late 60's I watched Liverpool most home games as I lived by Breck Rd. I remember seeing Tommy play a few times.

First match I saw was Liverpool v Southampton 1969. Southampton had a penalty at the Kop end and the Kop started a long continuous whistle. Scared the living crap out of me and, apparently, the penalty taker too since the Flying Pig saved it. For years, I believe, it appeared on the introduction to Grandstand
