The playground rumor I remember most is the one I made up to trick my friend- You can unlock Superman in Smash Bros 64!! Wow!! All you have to do is jump off the tower in Saffron City 100 times, then he’ll fly in and save your character on the 101st. Obviously this was incredibly dumb and only worked because I had a very gullible friend, but I still feel bad about it to this day. Noah, if you’re out there, I’m sorry.

A dearly departed grade-school friend once called me on my parents' house phone and insisted that in the final boss fight of Star Fox 64, if you took no damage, it triggered dialogue where Andross told Fox, "If you see your dad, tell him I said howdy yowdy!" I remember that total nonsense every time I think of him.

When playing Pokémon Gold and Silver there were so many new and never before seen Pokémon. A friend had gotten his hands on Celebi and nicknamed it ‘Chickenfoot’. He showed it to me and said it was super rare but catchable. I didn’t use the internet much back then so for the longest time I thought that it’s name really was Chickenfoot, and set out on a quest to try and find it. Needless to say, I was unsuccessful in finding it both in game and online 😅

Alex’s story about Ness reminds me of when during Diamond and Pearl some of my friends showed me Arceus and I didn’t believe them. Mostly because they showed me a fake Arceus card and I was like “that’s a fake Pokémon card, you can’t trick me I KNOW Arceus isn’t real!”

First, I just wanna say I love these more casual discussions, you 3 have a great rapport together. Second, one of the less remembered playground rumors I recall, still makes me a bit bitter to this day.... Had a friend of a friend who introduced me to Mega Man Soccer, and claimed that both Wily (who is in the game) AND Zero were unlockable (he's not in the game). He claimed you can see part of Zeros sprite hidden away on the character select screen, which was partially true because there's something there (but it was most likely Wily). He also claimed Zeros special move / power shot was he'd kick the ball up, his head gen would grow real big, and he'd do a massive header into the goal that was 100% effective and un-blockable. I played through that game SO many times trying to find a way to unlock him, even bought a game genie to see if something would come up, but the most I got was unlocking Wily in his mech suit which just wasn't as cool. Looking back, it didn't make sense to have Zero in an original series game, but at the same time... We got hadokens in MMX so it was still believable..

Last year, when Animal Crossing New Horizons was at its peak, there was a rumor about the mystery island tour. Apparently, you could increase your chance of getting a rare island by clapping in front of Orville to make him blush before talking to him. This was proven to be false by dataminers. But I swear, it worked regardless! I almost never got a rare island before, and I got so many of them by using the trick. I still did it after knowing it shouldn't work, and it did. I can't believe something like this happened so recently. And I know I'm not the only person with this exact experience.

As someone who has an uncle that works for Bethesda (yeah, not Nintendo believe it or not), I’ll just say that even if you actually DID have an uncle who worked for Nintendo, there’s a very high chance that he wouldn’t be able to tell you jack shit about things that have been unannounced.

I remember reading a Super Mario Galaxy guide that said you can unlock Luigi if you get all the stars, and it will say "Super Luigi Galaxy", and I had a friend who said he actually did it and that it's true, but if you get all the stars again you get Super Peach Galaxy, and then Super Toad Galaxy, then Super Bowser Galaxy, etc...

My two favorite video game rumors as a kid were both from SMB (NES). First was, if you shoot the ball on the top of any flagpole with 5 fireballs, the flagpole will fall down. The second was if you can complete the minus world in under 5 minutes you can play the whole game as the princess.

When I was a little kid, an older kid on the bus told me that if I went to Mewtwo's cave in Pokemon Y and did a loop around the inside of the cave 100 times, Mew would appear and you could catch it. I believed him and wasted hours trying to get Mew to appear. Now I just laugh thinking about it.

The biggest rumor I can remember from my childhood was about the Stop N Swap Eggs and Ice Key from Banjo Kazooie. According to one of my friends, who will remain nameless, the ice key unlocked the otherwise closed fridge inside Rusty Bucket Bay, allowing you to get inside. Inside, he said, was an empty egg carton. Supposedly, if you put every Stop N Swap Egg inside, something really cool would happen (never told me what it was, cause he said he “didn’t want to spoil it for me”, I think he just didn’t have an idea as to what cool thing he could say was hidden there.) He also told me how to get the eggs and ice key, here were the ones I remember most (all of these could only be done on a profile that has already beaten the game): Red Egg- According to my friend, if you play Superman 64, you can swap out the cart during the credits for banjo kazooie, which will, until you turn off your game, cause a flight pad to appear in spiral mountain. After activating this flight pad, some rings appear in the sky with a time limit, similar to the ones in clanker. Go through them all in the time limit to get the egg. Yellow Egg- Get a perfect game on Jeopardy and then return to Grunty’s Furnace fun, at which point you will be allowed to redo the game show with new, harder questions. At the end, you get the yellow egg as your prize instead of Tooty. Klungo asked the questions instead of Grunty, as she was still under the rock. Ice Key- Beat Frappe Snowland in time trials in under 3 minutes, then after the race swap out the cart for Banjo, at which point you can rematch Boggy, who, upon defeat, will open up the sealed area in Wozza’s cave for you, letting you grab the ice key. No clue why I believed these

The 6th playable Kong in DK 64. I was told various ways to get it, but all were fake. The only other playable character is Krusha in multiplayer.

36:50 The connection with Tom Bombadil is interesting. Both, as you said, are mysterious figures that seem to have some supernatural abilities. Both also have a connection to music, although for Happy Mask Salesman it's more of a stretch. Both also are unaffected by negative or corrupting power. The main difference is Tom is a benevolent or at least a neutral entity, while I always got a more sinister vibe from the Happy Mask Salesman. And to top it off, modern fantasy (including Zelda) can trace its origin to Tolkien, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Lord of the Rings fan on the Majora's Mask dev team.

The happy mask salesman is a bit more threatening than Tom Bombadil imo, but besides that it's a totally apt connection. You win, Mr Alex from Nintendo Life!

This was fun to have in the background today! The most notorious rumor I remember were the ones about getting the Triforce in OoT. I remember there were a bunch of crazy steps and it also involved like slightly raising up the cartridge while the game was turned on?? At this time, game forums were kinda popular, so it was disproved very easily, but people REALLY wanted to find the full Triforce in that game, lol

Does anybody remember all the rumors about Waluigi in Mario 64 DS? There was something about a black box you needed to hit, and shoot yourself into the painting of Peach with the cannon outside the castle, then the door beside Warios door unlocked with an upside down L on it. It was crazy lol.

I think hacking Aerith back into FF7 is just putting her assets into the third character slot, which if often left open for you to put any character in there. When the third/extra party member is in that slot, they don't actually have any effect on the story (only required party members do, which takes the second and first slot) and will have text boxes with the same or similar text no matter which party member is there. Hacked Aerith will do the generic text boxes, but the blank text boxes ya'll talked about is likely due to her not having dialogue for character-specific flavor text. Like Cid's personality is very brash, so he'd more likely to have a bit of unique way to say the same thing as another character. "Let's go over there!" vs Cid saying maybe "Get your !&@^ up there!". Since Sephiroth has party member data in the flashback, you can hack him into the third party member slot too. He was definitely not planned to be playable outside of that flashback, but you can hack him just like Aerith. Same idea there. It's not some conspiracy. The idea of killing off Aerith for good did come later into development, but I doubt the game was in a near finished state and they like cut content of Aerith to facilitate that idea. Like, it'd likely been mid-development rather than near-complete or alpha build or whatever.

The thing with Pikablu is that it took so long to be deconfirmed. After all the rumors I remember it first officially showing up in the short before the 1st movie and they don’t tell you its name so we went and saw it and left the theater basically thinking Pikablu was real. And then I never played another Pokemon after Red til gen 6 so I lived many years knowing Marill as Pikablu. So obviously now I always nickname Marill as Pikablu.

I found out my friend at work did the Aeris one XD We got to talking about it FFVII when we talking about FFXV when that was coming out, and I asked if he was looking forward to XV or VII Remake more, and he said XV, and I asked why and you could he gave off a clear expression of resentment/disappointment, and he said, Him: "well... you know the rumor where if you get Aeris to level 99 before she would normally die that she'll survive?" Most likely Aerith probably has dialogue boxes in order to prevent the game from soft locking in case Aerith is in the party after she dies either due to hacking or through glitches that they didn't catch(FF7 is incredibly buggy like most FF games preceding it).

I think a character analysis would probably conclude that Salesman and Bombadil have considerable differences in character, but I totally get the connection you made there. And besides we’re all hyped for Zelda right now-deep Zelda thoughts and feelings are firing off randomly in Hyrulians everywhere!

Not a playground rumor but when I was a kid I had a dream that I found a secret temple in Ocarina of Time and after I woke up I spent the next day trying to find the Dungeon that I dreamed up.

In Goldeneye on the dam there's an island across the river. You can see it with the sniper rifle. My old group of friends used to spend HOURS/DAYS trying to figure out how to get over there. I wrote into Nintendo Power and asked. They explained it was cut content. (Was mind blowing at the time that they wrote back!) And one amazing day we all purchased a gameshark and used codes to glitch are way over there. You can't doing anything but we loved it. lol!

Back when home computers were still expensive, my friend told me there was a way to hack Pokemon gen 1 to make misty topless. He then proceeded to describe a hacked version of the game that had some GTA elements. Young me was enthralled and extremely set on seeing misty topless in game

Keep in mind this was when SMB first came out and I was 7. To make it worse, after many many many many hours of trying to knock down a flagpole (and failing) resulting in deep hyperactive little boy crying and tantrums. My own mother tells me that she was able to knock the 7-3 flagpole down while I was at school, which obviously led to many tantrums, tears, and a spanking from grandfather after little 7 year old me said a very naughty "S" word after failing to knock down 7-3 flagpole for the billionth time . . . Thanks mom lol

back in 2020 it was discovered that in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, if you go to Cianwood city, and you release all your pokémon except one (because you always need to have one) and you make sure that that one can't learn surf, and you talk to a woman in the pokémon center, she will give you a tentacool

The whole “Bigfoot” fiasco from GTA San Andreas. I remember for months seeing forum posts from the official PlayStation website of people finding Bigfoot in the forests between two of the cities in the game. Spent hours and hours in that forest and never found it! Interestingly, rockstar eventually put Bigfoot in the game for both RDR’s Undead Nightmare DLC & GTAV, so they must have been aware of the rumours back then!

The only rumour i can remember is from Super Mario Galaxy 2. In Super Mario Galaxy 2 you can get 49 Comet Coins in total. The last one from the Grandmaster Galaxy's normal star. The number was always weird to me. But one of my friends showed me a save file with 50 comet coins and told me he got the 50th from the one hit comet in grandmaster galaxy. BUT it can only spawn random. So I gave it a few trys until I gave up because for me it was extremly hard finishing this level once. Afterwards, I think he maybe got a save file from the Internet and loaded it on his Wii because he also couldn't do the Galaxy on his own... But I don't know the truth. :D

One of my favorite that turned out to be true was in Mat Hoffman's pro BMX for the PS1. If you start a level, crash then restart the level 10 times then the game tells you "You ride like a granny!" and you unlock the old lady on an old school bicycle. I think if I made games now I would put something like that in one of my games. Something like those do something 47 times in a row and it actually did something.

My friend told me a rumor on the playground that if you try to trade away the Mewtwo you caught in Firered or Leafgreen, it takes it as betrayal, releases itself, and returns to Cerulean Cave! The same friend told me, during Gen 3, he'd heard that Pokemon Pearl would be a game where you pick a trainer class and get its powers. Motorbike as a roughneck, swim without surf as a swimmer, be a juggler and get cash thrown at you for performing on stage, etc. To change trainer classes, you had to defeat the Elite 4 again. The whole core mechanic was about Elite 4 runs, as to actually win the game, you had to beat them 100 times! (And yes, you'd still have to do the whole gym challenge to get to the Elite 4 the first time)

One of the biggest I remember is getting the rare Pokemon behind Bills house. I'm pretty sure there was grass back there and it was so convincing.

I once had a friend who claimed he had a game similar to Smash Bros but he didn’t have it anymore because he left his GameCube on over night and it melted. He also made me believe that Marth and Roy were part of the Legend of Zelda series and Fire Emblem was a spin off series. I also once went on one of those cheat websites and it told me that you could unlock Shadow in Melee.

My older brother told me when I was a kid that if you shot every credit target at the end of a classic mode run then you can fight and win the character Toad. Not sure where he got that from but I sure tried hella hard!

My brother once "discovered" a secret final boss in Four Swords Adventures where you can fight four Ganons at once. He also "found" that Mario Baseball for GCN had a team called "Mickey's Mushers" containing Mickey Mouse and his friends (and Pooh Bear). Every once in a while I think about these rumors.

My fave playground rumours 1. Celebi on route 123 and 121 in pokemon sapphire and ruby. There is a 1/100000000 chance you can find it there. Its rarer than shiny pokemon. You have to make the game “glitched” to encounter it. The chance increase if you play the game for over 500 hours and triggered the timebomb glitch that make berries stop growing. The accurate method still unknown 2. You can find mew on cerulean cave after beating the elite four more than 200 times on pokemon firered 3. You can fight jirachi by interacting with the meteor stone beside the space center on mosdeep city in pokemon Gen 3. The method to trigger it still unknown 4. You can go to kanto on pokemon gen 3 after become the champion, complete the national dex, and completing some unknown requirements nobody knows about lol

Smash 64 rumors were the best. I got halfway through "unlocking Charmander" (beat classic with every character 7 times) before just giving up. My favorite moments though were when I _thought_ a rumor was too good to be true, but later on I discovered it WAS true. When I unlocked the secret space world in Diddy Kong Racing, it blew my mind to pieces.

I remember my friends said that he got a special version of Smash Bros for 3DS from a random guy in Cananda that had Dry Bowser and "Kaboom Mario". He also said that Dr Mario had a hat too. I didn't believe him for a second.

I definitely had a couple of school mates who made up rumors like this all the time, I remember a few actually, but what’s crazy is when you believe something is a rumor of how cryptic and crazy it sounds and it turns out true, I remember reading in forums back in the day how you can get Tails in Emerald Coast, or Knuckles in Twinkle Park, or Amy in Casinopolise, and they required some over the top steps but the thing is... they actually work.

My brother told me you could get Louie in smash bros brawl by having four olimars on the Pikmin stage and leaving your game on for ten hours. He just wanted me to leave him alone.

Me and my friends thought mewtwo could unlock a move called bounce back which just reflected every attack in Pokemon, I think it came from the first Pokemon movie when mewtwo uses psychic to send attacks back at the Pokemon

My younger cousin and I used to play Spiderman: Friend or Foe on the Wii way back then, and we were both totally convinced that you could unlock Carnage as a secret character after 100%ing the game because Nick Fury mentions "Project Carnage" during the ending cutscene. We learned the hard way that this wasn't true lmao

When I was a kid, I was told that if you watched the intro sequence of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (the one that starts as soon as you turn on the N64 before pressing start) from beginning to end, your save files would be deleted! I spent MANY YEARS WITHOUT WATCHING THEM!

When they were still making games for Nintendo, Rare had on their website a section that I think was called "Scribes," where people would write in with questions and a Rare employee would answer them, usually with some cheeky response. I followed that page pretty consistently for a couple years, and I remember a lot of people writing in with questions about how Stop n Stop worked. There was also a fan website that I think was called Yumblie's Banjo Kazooie page (this was in the years leading up to 2000, so I think their URL had Y2K in it, and the Y stood for Yumblie). There were a lot of rumors about Stop n Swop, as well as what the lava world was that Gobi referred to in BK (this was pre-BT).

My favorite playground rumor was that you could get the Stop N Swop eggs and ice key in Banjo-Kazooie, mostly because for years I, and most people, assumed it was just that - a fake rumor. But then years later I was on the GameFAQs forum and someone posted codes to enter in the Sandcastle that apparently unlocked them… and low and behold, it ACTUALLY WORKED. Then of course a few years later the games were released for Xbox 360 and the original functionality was mostly restored, no codes needed. Anyway, that’s the only time I can think of where a fake-sounding playground rumor ended up being completely true.

The Halo rumor was bad, but I had a similar thing happen when a friend told me you could get Brock and Misty to follow you like Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow... by standing in front of both of them for 4 hours. No I didn't try, I couldn't be bothered, I think I waited 4 minutes before I got bored. Another friend also told, when I had trouble getting past Sudowoodo in Silver (because my English wasn't perfect yet) that they could send me the ability I needed via PC.

You can actually unlock Tom Bombadil in Majora's Mask by plugging in the mic from Hey You Pikachu and reading the complete works of J. R. Tolkien into it while Majora's Mask is on.

You can take a Shield in to the Boss fight. Sonic the Hedgehog on the master system. As long as you keep it from the previous level.

There used to be a million rumors about how to get a surfing pikachu. Turns out none of them were true. In gen 1 you pretty much had to get them through a special event or with pokemon stadium. Kids love to talk though. For a while I remember the rumor just being that you had to just catch a wild one in yellow version and there was a very small chance that it would be able to surf. There weren't even any wild pikachus in yellow version. I didn't get a surfing pikachu until I got a gameshark.

Back when New Super Mario Bros 2 came out, a kid at school told me that there was some way to access a fight against a dragon (I dont really remember the details) but he said something about the fight being impossible to win and that when you inevitably lost your game card would destroy itself, also destroying your 3ds in the process. I was scared of that game for weeks. I'm trying to remember more about the details and for some reason the number '2' with two more digits at the end I cant remember keeps popping into my head. Something tells me it's either a number of levels or a measure of time but whether that was actually part of it or not, I dont know how I managed to fall for that. Edit: I just remembered how this fight was reached. When you beat one of the Koopalings a key falls down onto the level and you pick it up to progress. Supposedly, this dragon fight was triggered if you didnt grab the key quick enough.

You know, he says that rumors like Mew under the truck can be easily debunked today, but I still like to believe that SOMEWHERE within the game's code/data, it IS possible or at least that that truck serves a purpose.

This makes me remember the dance club in jet force Gemini on N64 where you had to wear a costume to make the enemy ants think you're one of them and then go into a hidden area and you'll find a night club where the enemy ants don't attack you and are dancing in the club, complete with a DJ if I'm remembering correctly.

My friend told me that Ness in Smash 64 was a black Yoshi and probably named after Loch Ness. Luckily, 15 years later, there was a Black Yoshi skin in Smash 4 until it got cut in Ultimate.

I remember the Zelda rumors and it was awesome. My friend and I (we lived next door to one another and shared a game file) rushed home so many times and tried to find that secret gold skulluta or "extra dungeon" or "meet Mario on such and such island".

not a rumour anything but similar story. i was OBSESSED with kingdom hearts when i was a kid and i would take about it with one of my best friends at the time whenever we were in school. i couldn’t figure out how to open the door to merlin’s house (you needed to cast the fire spell to open the door) and was stumped for at least a week. i was complaining to my friend and he was the one who told me how to progress in the game. i vividly remember thinking how dumb i felt that i couldn’t figure it out, but it’s so surreal now because there wasn’t the internet or anything to easily access that information at the time. :’)

I had a friend back in the day who was infamous for starting these rumors at school. One of his most famous ones was a SMB 64 one where if you beat classic mode without taking any damage with every character, you would unlock Master Hand as a playable character. Another one is that if you caught all 150 Pokémon then beat the elite four, you could then fight professor Oak.
